PROLOGUE

It is true that words spoken by parents have a huge effect on our lives , lm saying this because I
know what lm talking about . l used to think lm smart deceiving my parents going behind their
backs doing mischievous things.

They gave me every thing l wanted until they heard l wasn't a child anymore , unknowingly l had
marked myself out of the family according to them l was an adult now.

My mom uttered the words " what will you say when you meet someone who wants to marry you
in the future how will you explain this disgrace of your , starting to explain wat you used to do back
in your days. " she told me l wasn't fixing her but myself by ruining my future and indeed it's ruined
. lm left alone both my parents died few years ago.

I feel like l have a huge weight put on my shoulder . Everyday l cry and pray lf only l could reverse
time l would listen to my parents . Even lf lm walking you see it's a corpse coz lm a dead walking
soul . Sometimes l even wonder lf people notice lm this broken or my smile overshadows
everything (my pain)

I am Nomathemba Zondi , l was supposed to be my parents hope of which l became their

arg it's that evil aunt again she really hates me all because lm said to be that child who is a
disgrace to the family

Me:"okay sengvukile auntie"

Auntie:"mxm nywe nywe lento ehamba ivula nje" she said closing the door
honestly this is how my life has turned out to be , l really can't breathe anywhere in this place .
Constantly being reminded that you no longer a virgin anymore as if it was said to be our virginity
and being called a hoe has become my favorite music because l really don't give a fuck anymore .
My emotions died along with my parents .

Anyways l wash my face and brush my teeth in this little bucket l have in my room or should I say
just a place where a person can put their heads in .l put on my apron and walk out mind you it's [ 5
am ] lucky for me it's not that dark outside . l grab the broom and start to sweep the yard , after
doing that l pour some water in the bucket and some cleaning equipment's and start wiping the
windows .

"Hmmm do fast mom said breakfast should be prepared in thirty minutes" she then walks away

"Sighs" that's my everyday routine

l quickly finish up and head to the kitchen to prepare some breakfast

All this while Nomathemba has been ears dropping

"sniffing" they will never have anything good to say about me but can l blame them though l lost
my virginity to the one l thought was going to be my forever but you know what happened he
disappeared the day after we did the deed . l had forgotten all about school lnfact l lost focus so l
never finished my grade 12 how much of a failure can l be that's how l thanked my parents .
Anyways l went to the dining to serve everyone breakfast

"San'bonani" l said bowing my head but only silence was heard l quickly marched back to the
kitchen and l heard laughter erupt in the dining room

Yeah neh l just wish l could die or something .

l took my breakfast and made my way into my room , well lm not allowed to dine with them at any
cost even wen there's visitors all l do is serving and cleaning .

I take a bite of my butter bread , at times l really wonder what life has instore for me . Who will love
me broken like this ? will someone ever value me? l mean who wouldn't ask themselves that
question after being ditched the day after someone you thought was your knight in shining armor
ditched you after the faithful night of sins .

My thoughts are disturbed by someone trying to open my door , l stand up

Uncle:" ntombazan " he says with a weird smile plastered on his face

"uhm yes?" l say frowning l really don't get this old man her or it's just me being paranoid

Uncle :"we going out and don't wait for us we will probably be back the next day"

"l will do so" yes! you should see my heart doing a lil nay nay

he just stares at me smirking

"anything else"

Uncle:"hmm no " he says stepping out

Old man here is wearing but nevermind that . Let's mind the peace l will be having today oh lord

l went to the dining room and took the plates to the kitchen and started washing then

"Girly!" you would swear these people don't know my name of something , l just march to where
my aunt's voice is at

They're all standing there prepared to go .

Auntie:"ses'yahamba ntombazan l hope u will behave"

l just nodd in agreement

Auntie:"mxm , Zipho ! Pedro ! Asamben"

They march out leaving uncle with me in the room .

Uncle:"don't forget to do your chores ntombazan" he says walking close to me as l stand there
awkwardly

"l won't"

Uncle just chuckles moving back and walking out

Wheeew! l sigh

l just head to my room to take a nap l hardly get some rest here so it won't hurt .

Nomathemba's POV

lts already around 9am , l really can't sleep for long the routines have ruined me . l boil some water
do l can bath , l pour the water in my bathing basin l don't even bath in their tub so yha. l do my
hygiene process until l feel like lve scrubbed my body clean . l lotion my body and l wore my
panties l don't need a bra .

l opted on wearing jean skirt with a simple shirt , piked my the bathing basin went straight to the
toilet to flush the dirty water.

Since lm alone here wat can l possibly do , l mean l don't even have friends around here not that
lm in the right space to be even making friends so let me just clean the house whilst it's still early l
just to manage my time properly today and not do anything in a rush .

"baba can we go to the mall there's something l wanna checkout there "

"baba" l say frowning . lf it was Pedro was the one asking he would be like "okay my boy"

ln all honesty l just wanted to get a few things to wear ,Nomathemba might always be wearing
rags but she intimidates me the girl is so cute so l just have to up my game too.

Don't look at me like that ofcoz lm about to compete with someone who doesn't care about me
(laughs) But l just gatt to give her a clue of wat the outside world looks like now

"Sighs" lm finally done with cleaning all rooms in the house including my little space .

lm thinking of going outside and just sit by the yard so l walk out the house and seat on top of a
stool just watching people living their lives and theyre so care free .

Young girls like me are already making it in life studying at higher places , while lm here nursing
my wounds . when will l find the courage to walk out of this pit ? Maybe today is the day ? but then

some new clothes withher mom also complimenting her taste . They went back to the car

Uncle:"take a look at how many shopping bags you have and tell me now that didn't take less than
30 minutes to get"

Zipho Just rolled her eyes

Zipho:"oh that's nice l can't wait to see my cousins actually everyone in general"

Pedro:"yeah too bad someone we left at home won't be having this fun" chuckling

lm still sitting outside the yard just looking at everyone having they busy lives my thoughts are
disturbed

"hey there!" some guy calls out walking with his friend

l just stand up and wave not leaving my perfect smile it's something I rarely do now because there
would be literally nothing to smile at but now l have a reason to smile , someone just greeted me

"Hela ke khahloue bona smile sa ngoanenoa se tsang , se tsa pelo eaka e tlolatlole , bona smile
sa ngoenenoa se tsang"

ehh this guy was singing out loud calling his friend l just know he was saying something about my
smile

"Baby girl you smile like a goddess" l just laugh plus he was saying in a high pitched voice since
lm far away from him

"please don't mind him he's drunk" his friend says dragging him away from the gate

"always remember you beautiful always!" the drunk guy shouts out while his friend drags him away
, what a character atleast l had a laugh today

But though the drunk guys word still ring in my head . l don't see myself as beautiful because of
the slave lve turned out to be if he can see beauty now then l would have to wait for him to come
see me sober and tell me the same thing again . My confidence gets crushed everyday by people l
call family . This thing of talking alone will also drive me crazy hey

The family finally arrived to where the other family members were seated at.

The man are outside the yard busy marinating the meat while the women are busy with cooking
pap and some making salads with many more family members coming in the house.

Yolanda:"today people are gonna eat muc all this food"

Sthe:"ofcoz our family is large muc"

Zipho:" what a nice thing to be a part of a huge family"

Pedro:"hmmm l feel you sis"

Themba:"l see where this is going omunye umntwana doesn't know the feeling of having a family
on her side and thins we are here"

Zipho:"she did that to her self and to us it's a lesson taught"

Yolanda:"yeah a lesson of closing our legs and finishing school and...

Sthe:"yeah yeah making our family proud we know . anyways who's up for a blunt"

Sthe:"will go at the shed at the park "

Mkhulu doesn't talk much

are here treating her like an outcast"

Uncle:"yes because shes a disgrace to this family wat a shame"

Mkhulu:"seng'zwile . Niyakhohlwa ukuthi nani nike nawenza amaphutha but you all here acting
holier than thou"

Gogo:"exactly baba wena MaSthe you had a child out of wedlock who judged you ,not to mention

Everyone laughs

Mkhulu:"she's your elder not your peer marn" he says angry

Gogo and Mkhulu walk out without anyone stoping them

Uncle:"let's continue with the Braai please"

Mkhulu and Gogo were now driving to see Nomathemba . They really despise the way family
treats her she made a mistake like everyone has in their past/recent lives no one is ever perfect
including them . Regret is something that eats them too they let this hate go too far.

"Sighs" lm now sitting inside the lounge sketching a lil something it's wat l sometimes do to
express my emotions especially when you ln this kind of situation like mine . l continue with my
sketch as l hear a knock on the door

*knock , knock knock!* hitting the door lightly

l open the door only to be met by this melanin guy with dimples with beard almost covering them
he seems to have a well shaped body structure even in that suit his wearing ,l then remember lm
staring

"hmm hey Mr ahm how did you get in if l may ask" l ask because he had to pass through the gate
first

"Sorry lt wasn't locked " oh l remember l only unlocked it wen l was shaving the grasslmut there

"l see uhm and?"

"Oh lm Luzuko Xaba and l was told this is the house l can find Ma'Sonto"

"okay Mr Xaba , Ma'Sonto actually stay in this next house "

Luzuko:" thank you and sorry for disturbing your peace ..."

Luzuko:"Nomathemba" he says smiling walking away

okay! wat was that . Anyways let me go back to my sketch

Uncle:"l did see them walk out the house few minutes before gogo and Mkhulu came in"

Ma'Sthe:"l wonder what they're up to"

Auntie:"l just hope there's no mischievous thing they're up to"

Uncle'Jim:"our kids are not like that hoe you keeping at your place" laughing
Ma'Sthe:"yha you have a point there so let me not worry"

Auntie:"l guess too , we will leave there food in the kitchen counter let's dig in"

Already. Uncle Jim had a piece of worse in his mouth with everyone gawking at him

they laugh alone , Auntie stands up giving Sthe a hot slap followed by the rest

Pedro:"mama we just high wats the big deal"

Auntie:" you kids of these days l salute you"

Sthe:"siyabonga" smiling

*Slap was heard* that was Ma'Sthe slapping Sthe

She says grabbing Sthe and Themba , while Auntie grabs Yolanda and Zipho while Pedro follows .
The man follow outside

Ma'Sthe:"awuze ne mvubu yam lapho Jim" refers to Uncle Jim

Uncle Jim:" besin'thembile bukan manje" laughs going to take the shambok

Ma'Sthe:" Nina lalan phansi" pointing on the dusty Yama

Zipho:"oh gosh l can't not with my clothes lm sorry "

Pedro'"just do it " she slowly went down with tears streaming down her face

Sthe:"lts comfortable down here" Yolanda laughs Themba just stares at him wishing he never
went with them look now he's going to get a beating

Uncle Jim:"Thatha" handing Ma'Sthe the shambok as she stared at this kids lying there like rolls of
hotdogs

the guys have their tears streaming down too

Sthe and his crew feel like they've just had a visit to hell coz their bodies are on fire . The elders
make their way inside the house leaving them lying out there

looks like today my peace is being disturbed , l walk towards the door opening it only to be met by
faces l thought l would never see again

Gogo:"Nomathemba my girl" she says smiling , why the sudden kindness . l just gawk at them

Mkhulu:"wont you let us in ntombazan"

"uhm oh Sorry" l say moving from the door making way for them as they get inside .l close the
door and find them already sitted
"juice" l ask trying to atleast converse than making things more awkward

Gogo:" water will be fine my girl" l nodd getting a water jug and glasses filling them with water . l
then take my seat

Gogo:" my girl l know you have a lot of questions in your head right now and as to why we are
here " sighs " lm sorry my girl we haven't been here for you ,you need your family by your side but
we all decided to dispise you . l see you are broken you want to run but you have no one to run to
" she says with tears streaming down her face lm also becoming emotional because it's true

Mkhulu:"what's she's saying is we are here for you ntombazan if you feel like packing up and
leaving do it we will accept you you are granddaughter no matter how much you fail us we will
always have your back because you are family "

"why now ?why not when my parents passed ? you allowed auntie to take me for wat ? a slave is

Mkhulu:"lm sorry we took long l wish l could reverse time , we could have dealt with your situation
in a matured manner"

Gogo:"as Mkhulu says we are sorry my girl"

l stand up they look at me like lm about to run or something , instead l take them into my embrace

They all walk out , heading to the car and Uncle starts the engine driving back home

Uncle chuckles remembering that they weren't given their food too as punishment

Nomathemba is washing her plate , she had cooked super and made sure to leave some for the
others as she was not sure if they'll come late or tomorrow

Auntie:"ntombazan" she shouts out for Nomathemba , she quickly exists the kitchen going to the
lounge
Nomathemba:"auntie senibuyile"

Auntie:"nawe uyabona muc " rolling her eyes

Uncle:"uphekile?"

Nomathemba:"yebo" l say nodding

Zinhle & Pedro quickly rush to the kitchen

Uncle laughs

Auntie:"lm going to sleep " walking away

Uncle:", okay I will follow you shortly"

Uncle:"girly how was your day , l mean since you were alone"

Nomathemba:"lt was okay" why is he even asking mxm

Uncle:"go sleep then tomorrow you have chores to do" he says brushing my cheek, wtf is wrong
with him

Nomathemba:"Okay" l run to my room"

Luzuko Xaba's POV

l can't stop thinking about that girl l saw today my mind keeps drifting , l kind of like that
Nomathemba girl . l know l just saw her today but she's just uhm l don't know how to explain it but l
think l would like to know her better . oh Nomathemba "sighs"

[ two hours later]

Everyone is asleep in the house , Uncle tip toes out of the room making sure not to wake auntie he
tip toes headed to Nomathemba's room and he slowly opens the door and he's eye are met by the
sleeping Nomathemba who's wearing her short night dress revealing her thighs . Uncle licks his
lips walking closer to the bed and puts his hand on Nomathemba's mouth to prevent noise , she's
awaken by that act her eyes are wide open shocked wat uncle is doing (mind you Nomathemba
sleep's with her light bulb on do she can see clearly)

Uncle:"shh lm not going to hurt you , l just want to give you a taste of something you haven't been
having for a long time" he says taking off his pants leaving his little dick dangling already dripping

Nomathemba couldn't believe this she quickly used her hands to grab uncle's dick squizing it a
slap landed on her cheek

Uncle:"damnit you hoe" Nomathemba pushed uncle and he fell ,she ran out of the room and went
to hide .

lts in the wee hours of the morning Nomathemba is still hiding , she barely slept standing . She tip
toes back to her room slowly and makes sure to lock the door . she grabs a huge plastic bag and
starts packing her documents and the little clothes she has , she couldn't wait for her grandparents
arrival already coz being in this house isn't safe anymore , it's not like it was anyways.

-an hour later [5 am]

as usual auntie tries to open Nomathemba's door but it seems to be locked

Auntie:"mxm how can she lock the door , she knows she has chores to do" she bangs on the door
startling the almost sleepy Nomathemba.

Nomathemba unlockes the door and a slap lends on her cheeck . wat was that for?

Auntie:"yewena doti don't you know u have work to do , since wen do you lock your door huh "

l just keep on rubbing my cheek

"ngiyahamba mina auntie " l utter

Auntie: laughing " kuse ksen kabi for amajokes , do me a favor and do your chores immediately"
she says walking away
l lock the door , lm not going to do any chores anymore Gogo and Mkhulu are coming to take me
away from this pit hole. l go down on my knees praying

"heavenly father , you have shown your self to me that you exists appointing my grandparents as
my saviors after all these years lm finally going to be free l just hope they treat me accordingly.
Mom , dad l promise to make you proud of me this time around l will stay focused at all cost " l say
with tears streaming down

This girl wants to test me uthi uyahamaba mxm where to? Even if she runs away she will still
come back here l don't think she will be able to endure the street life for long or maybe she will

Even Nomathemba heard it , she stood up taking her big plastic unlocking her bedroom door
running to the lounge

Auntie was opening the door

Gogo:"oh my girl" she says genuinely smiling at me while Auntie just rolls her eyes

Uncle joins in with Zipho and Pedro

Zipho:"Gogo " she says running towards her and giving her a hug

Gogo:"Zizipho " she smiles(Zipho's full name is Zizipho only the grandparents call her that )

Mkhulu:"Pedro my boy" he give Mkhulu a fist bump

Gogo:"l hope you kids are okay , l wish we are here to stay but.."

Auntie:"then wat are you here for" she says interrupting gogo

Mkhulu:"kahle kahle ihlonipho awunayo umdala Kangaka , seng'yabona ukuthi uZizipho ufuze
ban"

Zipho:"hau Mkhulu" sulking

Mkhulu:"haysuka , Usuk'lungele uk'hamba"

Nomathemba:"yebo Mkhulu" l say nodding

Zipho:"uhm Mkhulu where's she going"

Gogo:"siyam'thatha she will be staying with us from now on"

Uncle:"mxm take this hoe "

Mkhulu:"yey'wena mfana ngiyak'khuza" he says angrly ,uncle gaps in shock

Zipho:"you can't take her l mean l was about to flaunt with my new clothes please"

Gogo:"hau kanti you this hurtless Zizipho , your mother has damaged you"

Auntie:"excuse me the only damaged thing here is that thing standing next to you , don't tell me
about damaging my daughter"

l just woke up then remembered the news l heard earlier , l can't stop crying .Why is life so unfair?
Did Gogo and Mkhulu have to leave me now when I was just savouring the taste of living again .
Who will have my back now since people l call family loath me . Can't l just follow them , there's
really nothing to live for right now "sobbing" my thoughts are desturbed by someone entering my

Inside the hospital

Luzuko is seated pt the benches lost in thoughts , well he blames him self but he also blames
Nomathemba for having such a strong hold on him . He wishes he never met her maybe him and
Aisha would be very much in love and planning the way forward for they're business but his babe
is lying in the hospital bed all because of mattes of the heart

"Sir" someone calls out

"sir" the person says taping Luzuko's shoulder

Luzuko:"uhh .. yeah is she awake" he asks immediately after seeing it's the doctor
Doctor:"unfortunately she's in a coma we don't know if she will survive or not ....and if she doesn't
survive she won't be able to walk "

Doctor:"you can go see her , she in the ward next to the elevator down the corridor"

Luzuko stand up walking , he finally arrives at the ward .And there she was lying on the bed half
dead he walked next to the bed with his heart aching
