Overview

The Network Monitoring System (NMS) for Kavach is a centralized hub that monitors the health and operations of Kavach-equipped trains and stations in real-time. It collects data, sends fault alerts, logs events, ensures secure communication, and synchronizes time for data integrity. Additionally, it integrates with the Temporary Speed Restriction Management System (TSRMS) to relay speed restrictions to trains.

The Network Monitoring System (NMS) for Kavach, developed by RDSO, is a centralized

supervisory hub that continuously monitors and manages the health and operations of Kavach-
equipped trains and stations. Here's a breakdown of its functionality:

🚂 Key Responsibilities of Kavach NMS

1. Real-time data collection & monitoring
 Gathers data from Stationary Kavach (SVK) units (installed along tracks/stations) and
Locomotive Kavach (LKAV) units. This includes train position, signal aspects, speed,
brake commands, and system faults
 Visual interface allows live tracking of train movements and system status on monitoring
consoles. Historical logs can be reviewed in customizable playback speeds (up to 32×) .
2. Fault and exception alerts
 Detects and flags issues like missing RFID tags, signal packet loss, SPAD incidents, forced
emergency brakes, and repeated safety warnings
 Sends SMS alerts to maintenance teams or controllers in case of critical events, enabling
swift troubleshooting
3. Data logging & reports
 Stores comprehensive logs of events, speed profiles, location history, brake activations, and
more.
 Offers analysis and offline access, exporting logs and generating unit-wise/zone-wise
exception reports
4. Secure, synchronized communication
 SVK units communicate with each other and with NMS via E1 or Ethernet over optical
fibre, forming a secure network
 LKAV units use GSM-R (and in future LTE-R) links to forward status, receive updates (like
temporary speed restrictions from TSRMS), and send fault/data packets
5. Time synchronization & data integrity
 Every Kavach unit is synced via GPS/GNSS for accurate time stamping and coordination
 Data packets include CRC checks and sequence counters for integrity
6. Support for network-wide safety updates
 NMS works in tandem with Temporary Speed Restriction Management System (TSRMS) to
relay speed restrictions to trains via SVK units.
