Subnetting Calculations and Methodology:
To satisfy the unique host requirements of several university departments, the subnetting process
entailed splitting the entire IP address block [Link]/22, which comprises 1024 IP addresses,
into smaller subnets.
Using Variable Length Subnet Masking (VLSM), a subnet was assigned to each department that
either matched or slightly exceeded its host requirements. By reducing waste and giving each
host an adequate address, this guarantees effective IP utilisation.
Subnetting Strategy and Justification:
Depending on the size of each department, Variable Length Subnet Masking (VLSM) was
selected as the most effective method of allocating IP addresses. Subnets with more address
spaces were assigned to departments with more hosts. To cut down on unused IP addresses,
smaller departments were given smaller subnets (/27, /28, and /29). Because subnets are non-
overlapping and continuous, routing and management are made easier. The subnet masks were
chosen to guarantee that each subnet could support the devices in the department with ease and
allow for some expansion.
Planning for Scalability and IP Conservation:
In order to allow for future growth without the need for urgent readdressing, scalability was
designed by slightly overestimating the number of hosts needed for each department. Smaller
subnet masks were used for departments with fewer hosts in order to prioritise IP conservation
and avoid wasting huge address blocks. By conserving the remaining IP space for future
subnetting, the IP addressing scheme enables the addition of departments or expansions.
Summary:
There are 1024 IP addresses in [Link]/22.
256 (Hostel)+256(CS)+128(EE)+128(ME)+64(CE)+32(FB)+16(Library)+8(AO)=888 is the
assigned IP address.
