FITTING

2.What are the different types of tools used in fitting?

• FITTING TOOLS

A .Holding Tools

• Bench Vice
• Fixed to a workbench.
• Has two jaws: one fixed and one movable.
• Used for clamping
workpieces securely.
• Hand Vice
• For small parts (nails,
screws, wires).
• Operated with a wing nut.
• V-Block
• Cast iron block with a 90° “V” groove.
• Used with a “U” clamp to hold round jobs.

B. Cutting Tools

• Chisels
• Made of high-carbon steel.
• Types:
• Flat Chisel: General purpose.
• Cape Chisel: Narrow grooves, keyways.
• Half-Round Chisel: Concave surfaces.
• Diamond Point Chisel: Corners and V-
grooves.
• Hack Saw
• U-shaped frame with a high-carbon steel blade.
• Blade sizes: 250 mm long, 12 mm wide.
• Blades categorized by TPI (Teeth Per Inch): 8, 24, etc.
C. Filing Tools

• Files
• Used to smooth or shape metal.
• Parts: Tang, body (blade), handle.
• Cut Types:
• Single Cut: Soft metals.
• Double Cut: Hard metals.
• Rasp Cut: Soft materials like wood.
• Grades: Rough, Bastard, Second Cut, Smooth, Dead Smooth.
• Shapes:
• Flat, Hand, Triangular, Half-Round, Round, Square, Mill, Warding, Knife-edge.
• File Card
• Cleans clogged teeth of a file (prevents “pinning”).

D. Striking Tools

• Hammers
• Ball Peen, Cross Peen, Straight Peen.
• Used for striking chisels, punches, etc.
• Parts: Face, Peen, Eye, Handle.

E. Measuring Tools

• Steel Rule
• Simple linear measurement tool.
• Vernier Caliper
• Measures internal, external, and depth dimensions.
• Common least counts: 0.1 mm, 0.02 mm.
• Micrometer
• Measures with precision up to 0.01 mm.
• Used for outer dimensions.
• Vernier Height Gauge
• Measures heights or marks out parts on a surface plate.
• Protractors
• Engineer’s Protractor: Basic angular measurement.
• Bevel Protractor: Vernier-based, accurate up to 5’.

F. Marking Tools

• Scriber
• Sharp tool to mark layout lines.
• Punches
• Centre Punch (90°): For drill marking.
• Dot Punch (60°): For layout.
• Prick Punch (30°): Fine layout marks.
• Plunger Punch: Automatic spring-loaded.
• Divider
• For arcs, transferring measurements.
• Odd Leg Caliper
• Also called Jenny Caliper.
• Marks parallel lines and center on round jobs.
• Surface Gauge / Scribing Block
• Used with surface and angle plates for precision layout.

G. Supporting Tools

• Surface Plate
• Provides a true flat reference surface.
• Angle Plate
• Supports work perpendicular to the surface plate.

H. Testing Tools

• Try Square
• Checks squareness and flatness.
• Inside/Outside Calipers
• For checking internal/external dimensions.
• Feeler Gauge
• Checks gap thickness.
• Screw Pitch Gauge
• Identifies thread pitch.
• Radius Gauge
• Checks internal/external radii.

I.Threading Tools

• Tap
• Makes internal threads.
• Tap set: Taper (rougher), Intermediate, Plug (finisher).
• Held with a tap wrench.
• Die
• Makes external threads.
• Types: Solid round, Split round, Adjustable square.
• Held in a die stock.
