AHSANULLAH UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

Assignment-1
Department: IPE Program: MPE Year/Semester: 3-1
Course No: ME 3131 Course Name: Fluid Mechanics and Machinery
Full Marks: 40
Q 1. A jet of water having a velocity of [last two digit of your student ID] m/s [6]
striking a symmetrical curved vane at an angle of 30°. Velocity of the vane is
5.5 m/s. Find the velocity of whirl, flow velocity, relative velocity at inlet.
Velocity triangle is given below. [If last two digit is 00 then consider 10 as
your velocity]

Q 2. Velocity of jet at inlet [last two digit of your student ID] m/s and jet angle at [10]
inlet is 45°. Curved Vane is moving at 12 m/s. Exit velocity is 80% of inlet
velocity. Vane angle at inlet and outlet is equal. Calculate the horizontal force
acting on the vane. Jet dia=20mm. [If last two digit is 00 then consider 20 as
your velocity]

Q 3. A series of curved blades fixed on the rim of a wheel rotating at 250 rpm. Inlet [4]
and outlet diameter is 0.9m and 0.7m. Find the vane inlet and outlet velocity.

Q 4. A jet of water having a velocity of [last two digit of your student ID] m/s [8]
striking a series of curved vane at an angle of 30°. Find the maximum
efficiency if water exits radially. [If last two digit is 00 then consider 30 as
your velocity]

Q 5. A jet of water strikes a series of blades at an angle of 0° with an absolute [4]

velocity of [last two digit of your student ID] m/s. After striking the blade
the jet is deflected through an angle of 150°. What is the jet angle at exit? Also
find the whirl component at inlet. [If last two digit is 00 then consider 40 as
your velocity]

Q 6. Velocity of jet at inlet 22m/s and jet angle at inlet is 45°. Curved Vane is [8]
moving at 12 m/s. Exit velocity is 80% of inlet velocity. Vane angle at inlet
and outlet is equal. Calculate the efficiency.
