INTRODUCTION

The DPWH-Cagayan 2nd District Engineering Office is responsible for the planning,
design, construction, and maintenance of national roads, bridges, flood control systems, and
other public infrastructure within its jurisdiction. Its mission is consistent with the DPWH's
overall goal of providing and managing quality infrastructure facilities and services.

The DPWH has a lengthy history extending back to the Spanish colonial period,
beginning in 1868 as the Bureau of Public Works and Highways (Obras Publicas). The
department has undergone several reorganizations over the years in order to meet the country's
evolving demands. The formation of district engineering offices, such as the Cagayan 2nd 2nd
District Engineering Office, provides for more localized management of infrastructure
projects, ensuring that each district's unique demands are adequately met.

While the DPWH-Cagayan 2nd DEO's historical details are limited, its role is critical
to the region's infrastructure development and maintenance. The office collaborates with local

NARRATIVE REPORT

9
CAGAYAN STATE UNIVERSITY - CARIG CAMPUS
COLLEGE OF ENGINEERING AND ARCHITECTURE
CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT SUMMER S.Y. 2023 – 2024
During our five-week on-the-job training at the DPWH-Cagayan 2nd District
Engineering Office, we had the chance to experience what it's really like to work in the field
of civil engineering. It helped us connect what we learned in the classroom with how things
actually work in real life.

We did different tasks like joining site inspections, helping with design calculations,
and using engineering tools such as AutoCAD and SketchUp. One of the most unforgettable
parts was visiting construction sites and seeing how projects are done step by step.

From this, we learned how important safety rules and quality checks are to make
sure a project turns out well. We also got to work with experienced engineers, who taught
us a lot about how to manage projects and how clear communication between teams is key
to success.

(Jared Elijah V. Candido)

During my on-the-job training (OJT) as a civil engineering student, I gained hands-on

experience that significantly enhanced my understanding of the field. One of my key
responsibilities was drafting in AutoCAD, where I developed proficiency in creating precise
technical drawings, which are critical for ensuring that construction projects are executed
according to plan. Additionally, I participated in site inspections for various building types,
including school buildings, hospital facilities, and projects managed by the Department of
Public Works and Highways (DPWH). These site visits allowed me to observe construction
processes firsthand, assess the quality of work, and ensure that all activities adhered to
safety standards and project specifications. I also worked on material estimation,
specifically calculating the number of concrete hollow blocks required for building fences.
This task taught me the importance of accuracy in material planning to avoid waste and
ensure project cost-effectiveness. Furthermore, I engaged in calculating the volume of
footings, which is a critical aspect of foundation design. This exercise deepened my
understanding of structural integrity and the importance of precise calculations in ensuring
the stability of a building. I learned how to accurately plot plans using AutoCAD, gaining
valuable experience in precision, technical drawing interpretation, and collaboration with
senior engineers to adjust designs based on field data. Overall, my OJT experience was
invaluable in bridging the gap between academic learning and practical application,
equipping me with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in civil
engineering.

CIVIL ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT SUMMER S.Y. 2023 – 2024
(Renz V. Rodriguez)

During my On-the-Job Training (OJT), I had the opportunity to gain valuable insights into
various essential processes and practices within the field. One of the key lessons I learned
was the importance of the 3 C's: cooperation, coordination, and communication. These
elements are crucial for fostering effective teamwork and ensuring the success of any
project. I actively participated in the stakeout process, which involved accurately translating
design plans onto the construction site, helping to ensure that all structural elements were
placed correctly. Additionally, I conducted a tree inventory, assessing the species and health
of trees on site, which is vital for environmental planning and site management. I also
became well- acquainted with the RNR (Remove and Replace) approach in punchlisting, a
method that focuses on identifying and addressing any project deficiencies before final
acceptance. This proactive approach is essential for maintaining quality and ensuring that
all work meets the required standards. Furthermore, I developed practical skills in pouring
concrete for mat footings, utilizing vibrators to ensure proper consolidation and eliminate
air pockets, which is critical for achieving structural integrity. In addition, I gained
experience using STAAD for structural analysis and design, allowing me to model various
structures and perform necessary load calculations. I also learned to use AutoCAD for
drafting detailed plans and drawings, enhancing my ability to create accurate
representations of project specifications. Lastly, I recognized the significance of as-built
surveys in documenting the completed project as it was constructed, as well as the role of
punchlisting in ensuring that all aspects of the work meet client expectations. Overall, these
experiences have greatly enriched my understanding and practical skills in civil
engineering, preparing me for a successful career in the field.
