Impact of Metro bus on lives of people living in Islamabad and

Rawalpindi

1 Introduction
The advent of modern public transportation systems, such as the Metro Bus, has
significantly reshaped urban mobility, offering efficient, cost-effective, and
environmentally friendly travel options. In the twin cities of Islamabad and
Rawalpindi, the Metro Bus service has been a pivotal development, influencing daily
commute, urban planning, and socio-economic aspects of the residents' lives. This
report aims to explore the impact of the Metro Bus service on the lives of people in
Islamabad and Rawalpindi, offering insights into its benefits and challenges. The
objective is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the role this transportation
system plays in urban settings, contributing to the broader discourse on sustainable
urban mobility solutions.

2 Literature Review
The integration of mass transit systems in urban areas has been a subject of extensive
research, highlighting its multidimensional impact on cities and their inhabitants.
Studies like Cervero and Kockelman (1997) have emphasized the role of mass transit
in reducing traffic congestion and improving air quality. Similarly, Litman (2015)
explored the broader benefits, including economic, environmental, and social
impacts.

Focusing on Metro Bus systems, research by Ali and Barter (2017) on Lahore's Metro
Bus indicated improvements in travel time and cost-effectiveness for commuters.
This is echoed in studies of similar systems in cities like Bogotá and Istanbul, where
Metro Buses have been pivotal in urban transformation (Enrique Peñalosa, 2014;
Karaman, 2016).

However, there is a noticeable gap in literature specifically addressing the Metro Bus
system in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. While there are general studies on urban

transportation in Pakistan (Ahmed and Anwar, 2019), the unique socio-economic and
geographical context of Islamabad and Rawalpindi necessitates specific investigation
into the impacts of the Metro Bus service in these areas.

3 Methodology
H This study adopts a mixed-methods approach to assess the impact of the Metro Bus
service on the lives of people in Islamabad and Rawalpindi. The primary data
collection involves a combination of quantitative and qualitative methods. A survey
was conducted among 200 residents of both cities, selected using a stratified
sampling technique to ensure a representative mix of gender, age, and socio-
economic status. The survey focused on aspects such as commute time, cost, and
overall satisfaction with the Metro Bus service.

In addition to the survey, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15

individuals, including urban planners, daily commuters, and local government
officials. These interviews aimed to gather in-depth insights into the personal
experiences and professional perspectives on the Metro Bus impact.

The data analysis involved statistical techniques to examine the survey responses,
particularly focusing on patterns of usage and satisfaction levels. Thematic analysis
was applied to the interview transcripts to identify recurring themes and narratives.
This methodology aims to provide a holistic understanding of the Metro Bus service's
impact, balancing quantitative data with qualitative insights.

4 Data Analysis
The analysis of the collected data revealed several notable trends and patterns. The
survey results indicated that 70% of respondents used the Metro Bus service at least
once a week, with the majority citing reduced travel time and lower costs as the
primary reasons for usage. A significant correlation was observed between the use of
the Metro Bus service and a decrease in personal vehicle usage, suggesting a positive
environmental impact.

From the qualitative data, two major themes emerged. Firstly, the convenience and
accessibility of the Metro Bus were frequently mentioned, with many participants
appreciating the extended routes and punctuality of the service. Secondly, concerns
were raised about overcrowding during peak hours and the need for more frequent
service intervals.

Interestingly, the interviews with urban planners and government officials

highlighted the Metro Bus's role in urban development and planning. They
emphasized the service's contribution to decongesting roads and promoting
sustainable urban mobility. However, they also acknowledged challenges such as
maintaining service quality and expanding the network to underserved areas.

5 Results and Recommendations

Analyzing the study's findings indicate that the Metro Bus service in Islamabad and
Rawalpindi has had a substantial impact on urban mobility and the daily lives of
residents. The key results can be summarized as follows:

a. Increased Usage and Satisfaction: A high percentage of residents utilize the

Metro Bus regularly, with many expressing satisfactions regarding travel time
and cost.
b. Environmental Benefits: A notable reduction in personal vehicle usage
among Metro Bus users suggests positive environmental impacts, particularly
in reducing traffic congestion and emissions.
c. Challenges in Service: Issues like overcrowding and the need for more
frequent buses during peak hours were identified.

Based on these findings, the following recommendations are proposed:

a. Enhancing Capacity and Frequency: To address overcrowding, increase the

number of buses, especially during peak hours.
b. Expanding the Network: Extend the Metro Bus routes to cover more areas,
particularly underserved regions to increase accessibility.

c. Public Awareness Campaigns: Conduct campaigns to educate the public

about the environmental and economic benefits of using the Metro Bus,
encouraging a shift from personal vehicles.
d. Regular Quality Assessments: Implement periodic surveys and feedback
mechanisms to monitor service quality and user satisfaction, ensuring
continuous improvement.

6 Conclusion
The introduction of the Metro Bus service in Islamabad and Rawalpindi represents a
significant step towards modernizing urban transportation in Pakistan. This report
has demonstrated that the service not only offers an efficient and cost-effective
commuting option but also contributes to environmental sustainability by reducing
reliance on personal vehicles. While the system has been largely successful in terms
of usage and public satisfaction, challenges such as overcrowding and the need for
service expansion highlight areas for future improvement.

Ultimately, the Metro Bus service is more than just a transportation option; it's a
catalyst for urban development, influencing lifestyles, city planning, and
environmental consciousness. By addressing the identified challenges and building
on its strengths, the Metro Bus has the potential to transform the urban landscape of
Islamabad and Rawalpindi, setting a precedent for other cities in Pakistan and
beyond.
