Semi-Refined Carrageenan Procedures

The document outlines two procedures for extracting semi-refined carrageenan from red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii). Both procedures involve washing, heating with potassium hydroxide, and drying the seaweed, with the second procedure incorporating a neutralizing step using hydrochloric acid to adjust pH. The final product is packaged in a Ziploc bag after grinding.

Procedures for semi-refined Carrageenan

Procedure 1

Materials:

Material Quantity
Red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) 2 kg
12% (w/w%) KOH 1L
Distilled water 6L
6x5 in Ziploc bag 1 piece
Apparatus/Equipment

Apparatus/Equipment Quantity
Metal bucket 2
Blender/Miller 1
Knife 1
Procedures:

1. Wash the seaweed in running water and rinse with distilled water.
2. Heat, at temperatures 60-80 °C, the seaweed in a metal bucket with an alkaline solution of
potassium hydroxide for about 2 hours.
3. Drain and wash several times with distilled water to remove the alkali and anything that will
dissolve in water.
4. Lay out to dry, can be on a concrete slab, for about two days.
5. Chop and then feed to mill or blend for grinding.
6. Package the product in a Ziploc bag.

Procedure 2

Materials:

Material Quantity
Red seaweed (Kappaphycus alvarezii) 2 kg
12% (w/w%) KOH 1L
0.1 M HCl 1L
Distilled water 4L
6x5 in Ziploc bag 1 piece
Apparatus/Equipment

Apparatus/Equipment Quantity
Metal bucket 2
Blender/Miller 1
Knife 1
pH indicator 5
Procedures:

1. Wash the seaweed in running water and rinse with distilled water.
2. Heat, at temperatures 60-80 °C, the seaweed in a metal bucket with an alkaline solution of
potassium hydroxide for about 2 hours.
3. To lessen the wash time, wash the seaweed in a neutralizing bath with 0.1 M HCl.
4. Monitor the pH and remove the seaweed when 8-9 pH range is achieved.
5. Remove from bath and rinse the seaweed with distilled water.
6. Lay out to dry, can be on a concrete slab, for about two days.
7. Chop and then feed to mill or blend for grinding.
8. Package the product in a Ziploc bag.
