Objectives:
o To learn about Screw, Pitch, lead and mechanical advantage.
o Finding the mechanical advantage of duplex screw jack.
Equipment Required:
● Duplex screw jack apparatus
● Hangers and weights
Introduction:
Screw: A screw is an externally helical threaded fastener capable of being tightened or released by
a twisting force (torque) to the head. Screws are used for fastening and for transmitting power or motion.
In each case the friction developed in the threads largely determines the action of the screw. For
transmitting power or motion the square thread is more efficient than V- threads.
Screw Jack: A screw jack is commonly used to lift moderately heavy weights, such as vehicles. More
commonly it is used as an adjustable support for heavy loads.
Duplex screw jack
Advantage: An advantage of screw jacks over some other types of jack is that they are self-locking,
which means when the rotational force on the screw is removed, it will remain motionless where it was
left and will not rotate backwards, regardless of how much load it is supporting. This makes them
inherently safer than hydraulic jack, for example, which will move backwards under load if the force on
the hydraulic actuator is accidentally released.
Mechanical Advantage: Mechanical advantage is a measure of the force amplification achieved by
using a tool, mechanical device or machine system. The device preserves the input power and simply
trades off forces against movement to obtain a desired amplification in the output force.
The ideal mechanical advantage of a screw jack, the ratio of the force the jack exerts on the load to the
input force on the lever ignoring friction is a mechanical advantage of screw jack.
Procedure:
● Arrange the apparatus in the position shown.
● Attach the load weight hanger (0.5 lbs) with the square thread section.
● Attach effort weight hanger (0.25 lbs) with large pulley through idler pulley.
● Raise different loads with different efforts and calculate mechanical advantage.
● Repeat the same for vee thread section.
● Find out mean values and compare them with theoretical value.
