2012 - the UN member states came together in Rio de Janeiro
for the purpose of creating a new global agenda for
sustainable development. They agreed, in a document
called “The Future We Want”, to create a set of goals
that would build on the success of the Millennium
Development Goals, or “MDGs” — a set of 8
objectives that guided countries and the UN from
2000 through 2015 in the battle against poverty.
• also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by all
United Nations Member States in 2015 as a universal call
to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure
that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030.
September 2015
the General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development that includes 17
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Building on
the principle of “leaving no one behind”, the new
Agenda emphasizes a holistic approach to achieving
sustainable development for all. The SDGs also
explicitly include disability and persons with
disabilities.

document called “Transforming Our World: The 2030
Agenda for Sustainable Development.”

The 2030 Agenda was formally adopted at a UN
Summit attended by over 150 heads of state. It
includes the 17 Sustainable Development Goals,
supported by 169 specific targets.
