1. Define a continuous random variable. Give an example

(c) There are exactly 3 defective bulbs.

5. (i) Derive the MGF of Poisson Distribution and hence find Mean and Variance.

(ii) The number of monthly breakdowns of a computer is a random variable having a Poisson
distribution with mean equal to 1.8. Find the probability that this computer will function for a
month

(a) without a breakdown


(b) with only one breakdown
(c) with at least one break down

6. (i) State and prove Memoryless property of Geometric Distribution.


(ii) Suppose that a trainee soldier shoots a target in an independent fashion. If the probability that
the target is shoot an any one shot is 0.8. (a) What is the probability that the target would be hit
on 6th attempt?

(b)What is the probability that it takes him less than 5 shots.

(c)What is the probability that it takes him even number of shots?

7. (i)Derive the Mean, Variance and M.G.F. of Uniform Distribution.

(ii) Buses arrive at a specified bus stop at 15 minutes intervals starting at 7 a.m. If a passenger
arrives at the bus stop at a random time which is Uniformly distributed between 7 and 7:30 a.m.
Find the probability that he waits (a) less than 5 minutes (b) at least 12 minutes for a bus.

8. (i)Derive the Mean, Variance and M.G.F. of Exponential Distribution.

(ii) The daily consumption of milk in excess of 20,000 liters in a town is app. Exponentially
distributed with parameter 1/3000. The town has a daily stock of 35,000 liters. What is the
probability that of two days selected at random, the stock is insufficient for both days.

9. X is normally distributed with mean 12 and S.D. 4. Find the probability that (i) (ii)
(iii)

(Area or normal: 2.00=0.4772, 3.00=0.4987)

10. In a test of 2000 electric bulbs it was found that the life of a particular make was normally
distributed with an average life of 2040 hours and S.D. of 60 hours. Estimate the number of bulbs
likely to burn for

(a) More than 2150 hours


(b) Less than 1950 hours
(c) Morethan 1920 hours but less than 2160 hours.
(Area of normal: 1.83= 0.4664, 1.5=0.4332, 2=0.4772)
