This text below is about sports injuries.

1 What are sports injuries? Sports injuries are those that typically occur
while a person is participating in an organised sport, competition, training
session, or fitness activity. These injuries may have resulted from a
variety of reasons: improper training or technique, inappropriate attire or
safety equipment. 5

2 Two types of sports injuries exist. The first is called acute traumatic
injury, which usually involves a single blow from a single application of
force – like receiving a punch from an opponent in boxing, for instance.
The second type of sport injury is called an overuse injury, often chronic
in nature. Overuse injuries are usually the result of repetitive actions 10
which have been performed too frequently, causing stress and strain of
the body part(s) involved. Examples of sports in which such injuries are
common are: running, swimming, tennis and golf, to name a few.

3 Sports injuries can occur anywhere on the body, not just in places you
expect. Therefore, it is advisable to protect yourself completely at all 15
times and be on your guard against all possible accidents that might
occur.
4
All sports have their own safety gear and equipment you should use
while participating in them. In cycling and roller blading for instance,
helmets, knee, shin and elbow pads are some of the gear cyclists and 20
roller bladers can use to lower the risk of injury. Wear the correct and
recommended apparatus for the sport you are involved in to minimize
your chances of getting hurt.
5
An important step before beginning any form of exercise is to warm up
the body first, to better prepare it for what’s to come and prevent muscles 25
and tendons from sustaining damage. Do some simple stretching and
light exercise, especially those that involve the muscles you’ll soon be
using. After your activity or game, you might also want to practise a
simple routine before calling it a day.
6 Any sport can become dangerous if the person involved does not know
when to stop. Learn to recognize and treat seriously signs your body 30
gives you, telling you that something is wrong. Sudden aches and sharp
pains should not be ignored, especially if you have just returned to a
sport after having recovered from an illness or injury. Re-injury – when a
healed previous injury is aggravated once again – should be avoided at
all cost because the wound might take longer to heal this time round, or 35
the injured part could become permanently damaged.

7 In most sports, beginners tend to sustain the most injuries because they
often can’t or don’t perform actions the way they’re supposed to. If you
are a beginner in a certain sport, you are considered high-risk and
susceptible to injury, so be sure to have someone around supervising 40
you to make sure you’re doing things the “right” way. For instance, in
bowling it is important to observe the correct ball-throwing techniques in
order to prevent hurting your fingers, wrist and knee. If you are not sure if
what you are doing will cause you harm, ask a coach or trainer to help
you out.
