Smartphones are handheld devices that combine the functions of a mobile
phone with advanced computing capabilities such as internet access, messaging,
photography, and entertainment. The origin of the smartphone can be traced back to
1992, when IBM introduced the IBM Simon Personal Communicator, considered the
first smartphone. However, it was in 2007 when Steve Jobs and Apple Inc.
revolutionized the concept by launching the first iPhone, which combined a phone, an
iPod, and an internet communicator in one device.
This innovation transformed how people communicate, work, and access
information. Smartphones have greatly contributed to human flourishing by breaking
down barriers of time and space. They allow people to connect with loved ones
anywhere in the world instantly, access vital health, safety, and educational resources,
and participate in social and cultural conversations in real-time. Smartphones have
empowered individuals, supported mental well-being through social support
networks, and made knowledge and opportunities available to millions, improving
quality of life and fostering global interconnections.
