AGRUPAMENTO DE ESCOLAS DE SANTA MARIA DA FEIRA

PART I – READING
Read the following text attentively.
Technology-driven

No matter where we look today, we are surrounded by technology to the point of

taking it for granted. We think we are driving technology while the truth is that the tables
have been turned. We are now being driven by it. Try making it through a single day without
using any technology, which includes no electricity, no electronic gadgets and cars.
05
Imagining life without technology is unthinkable, but is it right to invest so much in
technology and, by doing so, will it really help future generations prosper?
When we see how the world has evolved around us, there are so many reasons to be proud. From moving
at lighting speed to going to the deepest parts of the ocean, the human race has accomplished a lot. It is also great
10 to see the advancements in the field of medicine, which has reduced the chances of many untreatable diseases
killing us. Another positive effect of technology is the way education is being provided to children across the world
as there are now better educational facilities to help future generations prosper. It should also be noted that in spite
of the famine and hunger in certain areas of the world, people now have access to better infrastructures. On a less
15 serious front, technology has provided us with great ways to manage our time and has also been used for
entertainment purposes.
When we come to the negative impacts of technology, a lot comes to mind. The biggest drawback of
technology is that it has frozen us socially. Simple gestures like smiling to strangers and the ability to talk to others
seem to have disappeared. We have also been comfortably confined to our seats thanks to technology. This is
20
made visible by the following examples: we now have groceries and food delivered to our doorstep and machines
to do the cleaning and washing. And even if we need to go a couple of blocks down the street, we take the car
instead of walking, which proves just how sedentary we have become. The effect of this sedentary lifestyle has
started taking its toll. Inactiveness due to the overuse of technology is leading to serious health problems, which, in
25 the long-run will have a huge long-term impact on our future generations.
Another negative effect of technology is that eco systems and the actual environment itself are being highly
affected by its use. In order to cater for our daily needs, technology is forcing us to use up the planet’s limited
resources. If we continue this way, our future generations might not have the necessary resources to experience
what technology is actually like.
30
Technology is incredibly powerful, but we need to find a balance between its perks and downsides in order
to minimise its long-term negative effects, which inevitably means implementing change today. Luckily, we humans
always rise to the occasion!
