Faculty of Economics and Business Administration (first Branch)

Subject: Networking Year: 2018-2019 1st semester
Midterm Exam score: 30 Duration: 60 Min. Instructor: Ali Saleh

Question 1 (3 pts)
There are four levels of addresses used in an internet employing the TCP/IP protocols, name
them and explain (one line each).

Question 2 (3 pts)
A signal is carrying data in which two data elements are encoded as one signal element. If the
bit rate is 1 Mbps, what is the average value of the baud rate if c is between 0 and 1 (c=1/2)?

Question 3 (4 pts)
To detect or correct errors in a sent frame, we need to send extra (CRC) bits with data.
Determine the extra bits sent with data 1010. Note: divisor is 1011

Question 4 (3 pts)
Draw the graph of the NRZ-L and Manchester scheme using each of the following data
streams:
a) 11110111 b) 01110001

Question 5 (4 pts)
In data link layer, explain the difference between CSMA/CD and CSMA/CA.

Question 6 (7 pts)
Ethernet questions:
a) The 10-Mbps Standard Ethernet has gone through several changes before moving to
the higher data rates. Talk briefly about these changes.
b) What is the ratio of useful data to the entire frame for the smallest Ethernet frame?
What is the ratio for the largest frame?
c) Define the type of the following destination addresses, state also which one could be a
source address:
i. [Link]
ii. [Link]
iii. [Link]
d) An Ethernet MAC sublayer sends a frame of 66 byte size with 48 bytes of data from
the upper layer. How many bytes of padding has been added to the data?
e) An Ethernet MAC sublayer receives 4530 bytes of data from the upper layer. Can the
data be encapsulated in one frame? If not, how many frames need to be sent? What is
the size of the data in each frame?
f) Calculate the Minimum frame rate of a node on an Ethernet LAN (1000 Mbps).
Assume that the Inter Frame gap is 12 bytes.

Question 7 (6 pts)
IP subnetting questions:
a) How many bits does the IPv4 has?
b) How does any TCP/IP host knows the Network ID and the host ID in a given IPv4
address? Give an example.
c) An organization is granted the block [Link]/27. Find the first address, the last
address and determine the number of addresses in this block.
