Executive Summary
The Aquaculture Development Initiative aims to establish a sustainable fish farming venture
at Bulawayo Polytechnic College. This project will provide students and the surrounding
community with practical experience in modern aquaculture techniques while addressing the
growing demand for alternative protein sources.
The initiative will employ students studying agriculture, promoting entrepreneurship and self-
reliance while enhancing food security at Bulawayo Polytechnic.
Main Proposal
1. Introduction
Bulawayo Polytechnic College is dedicated to fostering practical skills among its students.
This project aims to utilize the college's facilities to create an aquaculture program that aligns
with educational goals and community needs.
The college has partnered with various stakeholders, including local businesses and
government agencies, to ensure the project's success.
2. Problem Statement & Justification
The demand for protein sources in Zimbabwe is increasing, while traditional fishing methods
are becoming unsustainable. The establishment of aquaculture at Bulawayo Polytechnic will
provide an alternative source of protein and address food security issues in the area. It
promotes skills development. Investment in aquaculture training is critical to equip students
and staff with the necessary skills for sustainable fish farming.
3. Project Goal & Objectives
Goal of the Project:
To create an aquaculture program that promotes food security and provides practical skills to
students and college staff members.
Objectives:
1. To create employment opportunities for students through aquaculture initiatives.
2. To diversify protein sources for the college.
3. To promote sustainable farming practices among students.
4. To enhance the nutritional status of the college through increased fish consumption.
5. To demonstrate that young individuals can contribute positively to the community.
6. On a later stage we will introduce production of black soldier fish feed on campus
4. Project Methodology
4.1 Geographical Area
The project will be based at Bulawayo Polytechnic College behind the commerce blocks,
there is plenty space that can be utilised and close to a water source. There are abandoned
concrete tanks that can be utilised in the project. This serves a diverse student population and
the surrounding community.
4.2 Target Population
The initiative will target students and staff members, aiming to reach a wide demographic
interested in aquaculture.
4.3 Procedures/Strategies of Implementation
Collaborate with local fisheries experts particularly FISH4ACP for training and
technical support. FISH4ACP is an arm of the Food Agriculture Organisation (FAO)
which has educated tertiary institution like Chinhoyi University of Technology in
promoting sustainable Fish farming.
Implement sustainable practices in farm management, fish production and fish feed
production from black soldier insect.
Develop a monitoring system to track project progress and outcomes.
4.4 Project Timeline and Commencement
The fish farming project if approved, is expected to commence in august 2025. The expected
project timeline is 5-6 months.

8. Monitoring and Evaluation
Regular evaluations will be conducted to assess project progress and impact. This will
involve feedback from participants and stakeholders (FISH4ACP, Bulawayo Polytechnic
College and AgriFisheries), ensuring transparency and accountability.
9. Institutional Capacity
Bulawayo Polytechnic College has a strong management structure and experienced staff
capable of overseeing the project, ensuring effective implementation and sustainability.
10. Sustainability
The project will be sustained through continuous training, college engagement, and
reinvestment of profits into expanding aquaculture operations and other agricultural projects
that can be implemented on campus like rabbit farming.
11. Potential Impact of the Project
Employment: Creation of job opportunities for local youths.
Improved Nutrition: Enhanced dietary options for vulnerable populations.
