MASTER STANDING ORDER

1. These standing orders are to be read by each Deck Officer and signed
to indicate that the orders are understood.
2. When alone on the bridge and in charge of the watch, you must keep in
mind that the time for taking action for the safety of the ship while
there is time to do so.
3. An Officer must be on the bridge at all times, when the ship is
underway and he must not leave the bridge until properly relieved by
another officer or by myself.
4. Before taking over the watch, the relieving officer is ton make sure that
he knows ship position, course and speed. The weather condition and
other necessary information for the safety navigation of the ship.
5. Do not take over the watch while another officer involved in course
alteration or while avoiding other vessels.
6. Make sure that the lookout understand has duty and that he properly
reports objects and lights even he thinks you may have seen them.
7. When the visibility deteriorator or when you anticipate that the
visibility become poor, call me, make sure that the lookout is alert and
notify the engineer on watch.
8. Keep a safe distance with a passing vessel and its plenty of time be
alert to prevention collision, event you have the right of way.
9. Do not the hesitate to use the helm and engine, if you consider its
necessary and try to warning the engineer on watch in advance but in
emergency do not hesitate to Slowdown, Stop, or go Astern.
10. Call me at any time, you have slightest doubt concerning the safety
of the ship, but call me in sufficient time, its better to call master one
hour early than more minute later.
11. When making landfall approaching a port or sailing coastwise, be
sure that you known characteristics and the time of sighting any light,
if you do not see a light, you should to call me.
12. Check the Gyro compass and Magnetic compass every hour and
after alteration of course, call me if the compass very significantly from
what they should be.
13. When sailing coastwise be on the lookout for small craft and fishing
boat, some of them do not carry the proper light and someone carry
special light and signals, be sure that understand what they mean.
14. Be alert for notice to shipping, security and urgent signals on the
radio and VHF, call me at once if they may affect the ship.

15. Always remember that “SATNAV, RADAR” etc. are electron aids to
navigation and must be checked by visual bearing and sight (sun,
moon, planets and stars) when possible.
16. The order may be supplemented by night order when at sea or at
anchor.

17. Course never to be changed except by order of master or to avoid


immediate danger, in which case sharply change course to clear the
danger to notify the master immediately.
18. When course is changed and the vessel steadied on the new course
report same to master, and when lay off this course and check same
the course recorder is then to be checked and synchronized as soon as
practical.
19. Call the master at once when your decision is in slightest doubt; if
you feeling that the vessel sailing into danger place haul her and call
the master.
20. The vessel is to steer by hand at all time, when engine order
telegraph indicates “Standby” when steaming within 5 miles of land
when with 3 mile of other vessel and at all times that the master may
direct.
21. Fire patrol watchmen are reported to the bridge hourly between
2200H and 0600H.
22. A watch officer, you must be strictly attentive to duty less will not be
condoned, even thought, you will feel that the question which arise in
your mind may be trivial or even foolish, Ask the Master.
