CHRISTIAN ETHICS

TRANSCENDENTAL

It is a superior system, unique in origin and content.

SYSTEM: a set of principles, ideas, laws, harmonious.

1. Why is it a system?

Def.: "Christian ethics is the study of the principles of life established by

God for man, so that he can intelligently determine his standard of
life. Before God and in his relationship with his peers.
Emil Brunner: "Christian Ethics is the science of human conduct as it is.
is determined by Divine conduct.
Difference of Christian Ethics from the others: In that it recognizes God and His
superiority to help man.
Christianity has principles, laws, and regulations (dif. between these)
God is the author of the Christian ethical system.
For example: regarding the def: José, in Potiphar's house had to set

The man in Christ receives the Holy Spirit that will guide him.

2. Basic Concepts in Christian Ethics:

a. Man is recognized as a moral, free being (Creation and

b. God is the origin of man's moral nature:

Its concept is not the result of intention or reasoning.

3. HISTORICAL BACKGROUND OF CHRISTIAN ETHICS

There have not always been systematic treaties on Christian Ethics.

a. The root of Christian Ethics is Hebrew ethics, as they are the first.

and after the law." The Pentateuch comes to be the first text of
ethics.

These instructions are the foundation for ethical thinking.

The history of the Hebrew people, in the face of the principles that
they received, results in a lesson for us (that happened

In Solomon's days, the people were known
universally as an economic, cultural, etc. power.
EGW, that the prosperity of those days was due to the practice
of the rules that God had established for his people.

b. The Christian Ethics practiced by the early Christians, according to the

The facts were very simple. The main point is that they loved each other, they were
brothers, in the face of disputes = they cried out to God and He upheld them.

2
The first one who tried to systematize the principles that must govern
to the Christians was Augustine (The City of God and another work in Latin)
S IV.

c. During the Medieval period, the concepts of Ethics undergo a

deterioration (abandonment of apostolic simplicity) (Same in the days of
Jesus, they no longer read the Pentateuch but the Talmud, Mishna, etc.
they were just interpretations.

Abelard (French) (1079 –1142) Philosopher, systematized ethics

(Eloísa, niece, disciple, fell in love with her and was forced to
to marry, was mutilated, both monks. The correspondence is the
substantial, her ethical concepts. She became a Mother
Superior. Eloísa was blaming herself, Abelardo said it was natural.

Pedro Lombardo. (in the form of priests, was widely read)

How to be a good priest? etc.

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1227 – 1274) started young – The champion.

At 25 - 30 he began to publish his books. By 40 he had

Philosophy and Theology = Scholasticism. Vatican Council I and II

d. The reform (according to Catholics = revolution). Against the

Scholasticism and towards the Bible. Its maxims of 'Sola Scriptura'
And "Sola Gratia" - the Bible is sufficient for the children of God.

The strong point was that the Grace of God is what transforms the

the sentences of Lombardo

Grace heals, restores, enables men. Example: Luther

Institutions of the Church: Calvin
Melanchthon: he was Luther's disciple.
When there is a reform, Satan always tries to distort.
After the good ideas and beginnings of the reformers,
they began to discuss theological problems: transubstantiation or
consustantiation? From the pulpit they went to the pastoral room to
to discuss.

They began to be Lutherans, Calvinists, Zwingli, etc.
During this period, the Renaissance occurs.
cultural against the church
The reformists were infected by liberalism and by currents
rationalists.
Two movements appear (17th - 19th centuries) Enlightenment (it is not
more than rationalism)
How did the protesters react: the movement emerges
Pietism (Ethical thought arises as a reaction to philosophy)

confronting liberalism, Pietism emerges (new
Pharisees, Orthodox, very formal and nominal ones.
(The other reaction) (against formality) was the desire to feel in
my interior the Holy Spirit = this was Pietism = Example. Count
de Zinzendorf (Lutheran trend (1700 – 1760)).
Another man: Schleimarcher (1768 – 1834). He said: the

interior of Religion, (that the doctrine is not making us
good).
According to Pietism, ethical behavior should not be dictated by the
church (in general) neither by reason but by the regenerated conscience
by the work of the Holy Spirit.

Another movement rises against Rationalism. Its greatest exponent is

I. Kant. (says: there are situations that reason cannot understand) leads to
the "practical reason". Against pure reason. That man has a
moral consciousness that leads him to fulfill an obligation, he was Christian and cultured.
He intends to defend the Church according to its means. (This is an example
of satanic politics; behind a man of the stature of Schleirmacher or of
Kant, many followed him.
Kant is an intellectual defender of the existence of God, although he was not a
strictly observant.

Kant recognizes the importance of a moral code (the rational one, he does not accept
this). Today we face, through two currents, the same: Neo -
orthodox: Brunner, Barth: that the teaching of the Bible should not be so
only knowledge, the most important thing is the application of it
teachings. The Bible must be interpreted in the context in which people
vice. Thus, the Epistle to the Romans was interpreted in his days. His student E.
Brunner goes further, saying that the most important thing is to feel the presence of God.
For him, there is no defined message, codes, etc., but rather a communication.
subjective.

Pietism is a reaction to what happens within the Church.
Kant's argument is a reaction to what happens outside the Church in the

Apart from Neo-orthodoxy, Existentialism rises (two variants)

Furthermore, the charismatic movement is the harvest of the discussions

4. CHARACTERISTICS OF CHRISTIAN ETHICS AND METHODS

Characteristics:

A. Deontological: (Duty, treatise on duties)

Ethics recognizes the existence of a moral obligation that the Christian must
to fulfill. The conscience recognizes that there is a response, a mission.

MAN AS AN ETHICAL BEING (Theological Anthropology)

(Genesis 2: 15-17)

1. His moral 'status' in creation:

Gen 1: God created man in His image, moral, rational, social, in function
administrative, lordship.

Evidence of this creation:

Gen 2:15 "to work it and keep it"

Ability to identify creatures, give them names.

Ability to reason and reach intelligent conclusions.
Ability to express their emotions (in the face of the emergence of
Eva).

6
Ability to assume responsibilities and determine their
conduct according to laws. (The LORD said - 'Of every tree
you will be able to eat...

Psalms 8:3-9 'a little lower than the angels' Status .... God saw
that everything was very good" (PP 25,26)
Choose freely? - How did Eve do it? Only Adam was there
[Reference C.S. 702. Character, form, physiology]

2. The moral test of Man:

It was not enough to create it as a moral being; it was essential that it

man was actually free to choose his destiny, to know his identity
before God. I had to go through a trial.

The test was made through the tree of knowledge of Good and Evil.

PP 29, 30 "Before granting them eternal security, it was necessary that their loyalty
out of the trial" If they endured the test, they would be separated from the tree of
the test, Knowledge of Good and Evil.

PP 30. "God could have had Adam's hand, even if he had not been free,"
it would have given basis to the devil's accusations about the government of
God.

The result of the test was Adam's exercise of freedom, he did well in
choose, but he chose the wrong one. He failed the test, lost the battle. Satan
he took his place. The man allied himself with Satan. Because of his failure,
weakened the exercise of his will, suffered a mental alienation, became separated
from God and distanced himself from the source of moral strength (God)

3. Moral status after the test:

Gen 6:5,12 With his sick will, mentally alienated, mind

darkened by sin (TITUS 1:15)

Through sin the whole organism is disordered, mind

perverse, sin has degraded the faculties of the soul, imagination
corrupt...

The Gadarenes: EGW: what Satan is capable of doing

with the human being. Before they cried out to Jesus, the demons spoke.
(they did not have the freedom to speak, express themselves) This experience also illustrates
what God can do with sinners (Luke 8:26)
In his full judgment, Satan undermines mental functions. God them
restore.

But since we stopped burning incense to the queen of heaven and pouring out drink offerings to her, we have lacked everything and have been consumed by the sword and by famine. THE GOSPEL - SOURCE OF MORAL POWER TO MAN

Origin of the Gospel.
2. Moral nature of the Gospel.
3. Moral effectiveness of the Gospel.
4. The Gospel as a resource of permanent moral power.

Analysis:

1. The Origin of the Gospel:

A. a. Etymological: Ángelo = messenger - to announce.

9
It is not a term coined by the early Christians. It was already a
political-military term and was adopted as appropriate for
to represent the Plan of Salvation. It was a message of joy.

In addition, the term had a lot of connotation with the interests of

empire and it was related to religion since the good news
they came from the gods. Upon the triumphant return of the Roman army, it was
sent a messenger, who brought good news of
victory and this, thanks to the 'gods' was a message of tranquility.

b. They used it with an application of: not 'good news' in

general, if it is used more specifically: the universal victory of
God over the world, his return to Zion and his enthronement.

I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness in the great assembly; behold, I do not restrain my lips, O LORD, You know. evangelize
Psalm 60:11 'of those who brought good news'
Sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth. "proclaim his salvation day after day."

announce good tidings, that publisheth peace; that bringeth good tidings of good, that publisheth salvation; that saith unto Zion, Thy God reigneth!
peace.

c. N.T. It is used in the same sense. Christ had died for our
sins - all his action according to the prophecy. Victory against the
sin and Satan.

Mateo 1:14,15
Matthew 4:23
But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. For truly I tell you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
Matthew 5 - 7 Sermon on the Mount.
Saint Paul gives the most meaning to the word; victory, salvation.

knows something," it brings people together and teaches them, that's where the Matetés went
(students).

In ancient Greece, everyone chose their own teacher, their philosopher.

Jesus' case was different, he called them one by one.
Jesus acknowledged being a teacher, Rabbi.
At the Last Supper: 'they call me teacher and I am one'

It was applied to Caesar (Augustus, for example) 31 BC - 14 AD), it
he called himself Lord - Nero (54-68) called himself Lord of all
world, Domitian (81-96) "Master, Lord, and God" therefore the
the word came to have an authoritarian, dominant use.

The pagan world accused Christians of being polytheists (for calling ...
Sir to Jesus, apart from Caesar)

Being Christian was a symbol of high treason to the State.

John 6:68,69 "the multitude seeks to crown him" after leaving

Jesus asked his disciples, 'Do you want to leave too?'

The disciples had to make a decision. To whom shall we go?

It was a recognition of his lordship.
Acts 2:32 After his resurrection, Jesus is declared (recently),

For even if there are so-called gods, whether in heaven or on earth (as indeed there are many 'gods' and many 'lords'), yet for us there is but one God, the Father, from whom all things came and for whom we live; and there is but one Lord, Jesus Christ, through whom all things came and through whom we live. For us, there is only one God, one Lord.

Revelation 19:16 'to his own' Lord of Lords.

Implications:

a. If it is our Lord, we belong to him and in him we exist, therefore,

can regulate the life of his own.

b. Christ is the highest authority of the Church. Obedience is a result

of gratitude and love.

c. Christ takes special care of his own.

Implications for the Disciples (matetís)

In the Greeks, the matetís is an apprentice who accompanies the master.
and learns alongside his teacher.
The servant (doulos, diákono) 'one who owed absolute obedience to
his master" (Mat. 8:9) (Mat. 24:45 sometimes occupies a position of
responsibility). Works not for salary, nor for recognition,
rather, for being a slave.
(Luke 17:7-10) The master has unlimited power over him (Matt.
18:27-)(Matt. 18:34) (Matt. 25:30)
In this context Paul writes acknowledging his slavery (Rom.
12:11) (Rom 12:11) (Rom. 14:18) (Col. 3:24)
Fil 2:1-4
The doulos and the diakonos are exclusively dedicated to the Lord.
His main concern is to fulfill the mission that his master gave him.
He commissioned. His greatest search is to know God's plan for his
life, your greatest discovery is the work of your life.
This is the philosophy that guides their behavior in relation to God and
the men.

TWO NORMATIVE FUNDAMENTALS IN CHRISTIAN ETHICS

LOVE:

15
Fileo: attraction from one to another, emotional, inside and outside the home. Concern,
hospitality, without religious implication.

Eros: Emotional affection, including the sensual between man and woman.

Agapao: In relation to the love of God for man.

John 3:16 Love is for His chosen ones
As it is written: 'Jacob I loved, but Esau I hated.'
As concerning the gospel, they are enemies for your sake: but as touching the election, they are beloved for the fathers' sakes.

The true Christian fruit is due to God's love for man: "I love you because
God loves you

Why is love a foundation of human behavior?

It is different from a friendship where the concept of love for God does not exist.
the gift of tongues is genuine with love.
Provides genuineness to the profession of faith.
Provide genuineness to the Christian Service (others do it too)
Provide genuineness to the sacrifice

b. It is a prescriptive norm. A norm established by God.

Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. Love your neighbor.
John 13:15 A new commandment I give you
And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. he is a liar, if he does not love

c. It is distinctive, unmistakable of the true Christian. The birds them

they were recognized for their love.

1 Juan 4:7,8
To love, one must be born again.
1 John 5:1
1 Peter 4:7,8

d. It is the content of God's commandments. Its foundation

Galatians 5:14 Everything is fulfilled in love.
You shall love your neighbor: you do well.
The aim of our charge is"The
love thatpurpose

THE LAW Why is it a foundation of Christian Ethics?

Because it is expressive of the will of God.

Romans 2:18 you know what is good by the law
(instructed) by the law, approve the best.
He said to him, 'Why do you ask me about what is good? There is only one who is good. If you want to enter life, keep the commandments.'

Ecclesiastes 12:13 the whole duty of man is to keep the commandments.

3. Because it is (they are) to regulate the behavior of the children of God (in the first place)
Because...
He existed before Adam
Because the children of God love her and delight in her. (God did not proclaim the
law in Egypt because his people there were slaves, under love, they could not
to understand it or obey it. First he freed them and then he gave them the law) At Sinai
the law was given in a special format due to the fallen conduct of
Man. Before Sinai, the law was based on principles.

The commandments are more than rules; they are principles, and these principles are two: Love.
to God, Love your Neighbor.

III. PRINCIPLES OF CHRISTIAN ETHICS IN SPECIFIC AREAS

The Christian has duties to God, his family, society, etc.

The Christian before his God.

A. Philosophy of the Christian about his position before God.

a. Acknowledge him: Man is ungrateful by nature: Isaiah 1:1,2,3,4,10.

Romans 2:1,2
Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eleven years. He did evil in the eyes of the Lord his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke the word of the Lord. He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him take an oath in God's name. He became stiff-necked and hardened his heart and would not turn to the Lord, the God of Israel. Furthermore, all the leaders of the priests and the people became more and more unfaithful, following all the detestable practices of the nations and defiling the temple of the Lord, which he had consecrated in Jerusalem. The Lord, the God of their ancestors, sent word to them through his messengers again and again because he had pity on his people and his dwelling place. But they mocked God's messengers, despised his words, and scoffed at his prophets until the wrath of the Lord was aroused against his people and there was no remedy.

17
b. To love him: 1 John 4:10,19; Deut 10:12

c. Trust him: Candle of San Miguel - in his commentary on Gen 3, "that

the
the first sin was distrust" which must be restored in order to
learn to trust in God.
Experience of the people in the Exodus: Deut 1:8,21,22.
Prov. 3:5 'Trust in the Lord with all your heart'
Pedro 'oligopisteo'.

d. Obey: Agustin: that, after the sin of distrust, followed the

disobedience.
Moses taught it as part of the Israelite Creed.
And you shall rejoice in all the good which the Lord your God has given to you and your house, you and the Levite and the stranger who is among you. These words were said to the penitent when offering his tithe and
offering.
These are those who were not defiled with women, for they are virgins. They follow the Lamb wherever He goes. These were redeemed from among men, being firstfruits to God and to the Lamb.

B. Problems of the Christian.

a. Cultural and religious syncretism = This, as a system that tries to

to combine two opposing religious ideas.
The pressure of the world is felt in the Church, habits, etc.
Weddings (with religious depth, have come to be
Israel practiced blatant syncretism.
(they worshiped Baal and Jehovah)

b. Doctrinal and denominational pride.

The Talmud, the Mishna - for the Jews - were above the
Bible.
Sometimes, board agreements are more important than the
principles of the Church. When there are principles, there are no committees. This
pride has paralyzed the members in their service, they only wait,
inside the temple, the 2nd coming.

c. Lack of true identification with God.

Identification with the Church and not so much with its founder.

C. General Orientation (What attitude to take?)

a. Isaiah 51:9 wake up

And do this, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. wake up from the dream
Awaken to the social, prophetic reality.

b. Born again:
Ezeq. 18:30,31 'that they turn and live'

SC 53 a revival of true piety...

c. Collaborate with the mission of the Church: Isaiah 60:1

SC 52:1 The reason why the children of God...
Selfishness vs. doing the right thing.

2. THE CHRISTIAN BEFORE HIMSELF.

Matthew 19:19 1 Timothy 4:16 "Take care of yourself"

A. Philosophy of Christ before himself.

a. I am a creature in the family of God.

Question - 3 years - Rosalinda - was or 'I am a special daughter of dad.
and mom
Heb. 12:22-24 "you have come to the family of God (Ecclesia)"
Ephesians 2:12-19 "at that time without citizenship", through him the ones and
others we have entry 'you are members of the family of God' (v 20).

b. I am a servant of Jesus Christ, for all my life

Rom. 6:18,22 "Servants of unrighteousness now servants of righteousness"
1 Peter 2:16 "Live as servants of Jesus"

c. I am a chosen temple of God.

Pablo compares the church to a body 1 Cor 6:19 also to

the body of Man, this has several theological implications
(AT and NT)

d. I am a witness of the Power of God before the universe. 1 Cor 4:9

And they sang a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders; and no one could learn that song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the earth. They sing a song for the experience they lived.

B. Ethical Problems of the Christian Regarding Himself.

a. Lack of Identity:
S.C. 55:1 There is a great need for reform in the town...

b. Impact of Contemporary Culture.

S.C. 57: Many of those who call themselves Christians are new
Christian moralists are only doers of the Word.

c. He suffers from self-abandonment. (social, cultural, etc.) and spiritual.

19
S.C. 8:3 Many of those who profess the truth.... will be
found lacking...

d. Suffers from the lack of a Christian Service ideal. S.C. 45:2,3

e. He suffers from the pride of his false security.

C. General Guidelines

a. Experiencing our need to go to Christ (lepers never

they received health because they felt no need for it. The healed,
they shouted before)

b. Feel the joy of being a Christian

Isaiah 60:1,2 "Arise and shine"

c. Experience Christian growth.

Texts

d. Learn to value your status as a Child of God

The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with Him in order that we may also be glorified with Him.

3. THE CHRISTIAN IN FRONT OF HIS FAMILY

A. Christian Philosophy for the Family

a. God created a man and a woman as basic components

to form a home.

What does this mean?

Man was created as man, his bearing, desires, ideals,

physical characteristics, etc.
The woman likewise, feelings, ideals, etc.
Both had different characteristics, such as their sex, always.
both were created in the image of God.

b. God instituted marriage so that they would live together.

20
He pronounced the nuptial blessing and in doing so, made this act be
an official, approving in the formation of a home.
Thus, the home is a center of companionship for development.
character of both.
Thus, the primary function is not reproduction, but to have a climate that favors.
the development of the character of both.
Controversy: there must be children: 'when God does not give children, Satan'
of nephews.

c. After the nuptial blessing, God pronounces the blessing of the

fatherhood. From this it is concluded that God is the one who gives children and they give to Him
belong.

Implications of this philosophy:

a. That each new home is an autonomous social cell, therefore, the

the management of a new home pertains to both components,
whoever takes this responsibility before God who blesses them.

b. The only form of marriage established by God is the union of a

man and woman, any other type is a manifestation of
rebellion against the plan established by God for happiness of the
man. Emphasis on the number as well)

c. Fatherhood is a command from God for husbands, upon becoming

father and mother, it is a divine privilege granted to them, therefore,
the only form of paternity established for the good of the race
human is the one that takes place within marriage. Another situation,
it is an anomaly of what was established at the beginning.

d. Since it was instituted by God, marriage, every child born there, has
a double parenthood. First, God is the true one, second the
natural parents... they must raise them in harmony with the will of
God, in the spirit of the parents of Samson; "How are we going to
create it?” (Manoa)

e. The nuptial blessing is equivalent to a divine mandate for the

the contracting parties may live united in the sacred state of marriage, until
death. Therefore, the home is a social unit created by God
with the purpose that both protect their physical-social integrity,
moral, until the end.

f. According to Genesis, 'what God has joined together let no man separate,' it is a
essential part of the marriage blessing that without a doubt
define the indissoluble nature of marriage, It is a warning to

all the men (Ejm) so that they do not attempt to separate it in any way
what God has joined. Thus, the principle prevented the problem of
divorce.

B. Frequent ethical problems:

Hasty marriages.
Causes:

b. When the contracting parties have had relations and there is fear of a

THE DIVORCE (Problems – Effects. Etc.)

In South America, it has a significant impact. In California, the number

the number of marriages is equal to the number of divorces.

Symptomatology:

1. Decadence of civilization.
2. Social and cultural environment, marriage is not considered relevant, that it does not
adjusts to the present reality.
3. That man has improved in his cultural level and is more 'honest'.
What was once silenced is now expressed openly. Now conversations are held freely.
that's the problem.

Reasons for the increase in Divorce:

1. Social Studies: that there are new causes, in addition to the traditional one that
it was adultery.

2. That there are more 'possibilities' than in the past.

the social.

Predominant criteria regarding divorce in the Christian environment:
