Mantissa

The mantissa refers to the fractional part of a logarithm, defined as the difference between a number and its integer part. For example, in log(123.7585), the integer part is 123 and the mantissa is 0.7585. The document also discusses the mantissa's role in logarithmic calculations and its usage in Anglo-Saxon countries to denote the fractional part of a real number.

Graph of the mantissa function of the logarithm base 10.

Originally mantissa, in the field of logarithms, it refers to the difference
between a number and its integer part, that is, its fractional part.

In the decimal number 123.7585, the integer part is 123 and the mantissa is 0.7585.
In the negative decimal number -17.228, the integer part is -17 and the mantissa is
0.228

Definition
It is in this sense that we talk about the mantissa and characteristic of a logarithm.
decimal.1

In log(123,7) = 2.09237, the characteristic is 2 and the mantissa is 0.09237

In log(0.001237) = -2.90763 = -3 + 0.09237, the characteristic is -3 and the mantissa
it is 0.09237.
The mantissa of the decimal logarithm of a number x greater than zero is equal to a number
real m such that 0 ≤ m ≤ 1 defined by the formula:

m(x) = log_{10}(x) - C = log_{10}(x) - ⌊log_{10}(x)⌋

m(x) = log_10(x) - C = log_10(x) - floor(log_10(x))

where C is the characteristic or integer part of { extstyle extit{log}}

log_{10}(x). Examples:
The mantissa of \( \log_{10}(500) \)
log_{10}(500) is 0.69897, since:
log_{10}(500) log_{10}
(500)} = 2.69897 = 2 + 0.69897
The mantissa of log_{10}(0.008)
\log_{10}(0.008) is 0.90309, because:
log_10(0.008)
_{10}(0.008)} = -2.09691 = -3 + 0.90309
As a consequence of the definition, the numbers { extbackslashdisplaystyle extbackslash log extbackslash _{10}(x)}
log10(x) y log10(10^k x)
log_{10}(10^{k}x) have the same mantissa for every integer number.
In Anglo-Saxon countries, the term mantissa is also used to refer to the function that returns.
the fractional part of a real number x:23

frac(x) = x - ⌊x⌋
frac(x) = x - ⌊x⌋
