Exercise 5 (4-5)

The document presents two statistical analyses: one examining the impact of active participation in extra-curricular activities on students' grades, and the other comparing the packing speeds of a new machine versus an old machine. The first analysis shows that the mean GPA of active participants is lower than that of non-participants, but the results are not statistically significant at the 5% level. The second analysis indicates that the new machine packs slower than the old machine, with significant evidence against the hypothesis that it packs faster.

4.

To determine whether active participation in extra-curricular activities are detrimental to one's

grades, the following grade-point averages were collected over a period of 8 years.

YEAR Total Mean Variance

GROUP
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Active 80 85 85 88 84 85 83 83 673 84.13 5.2679
Not Active 90 90 92 91 88 80 79 80 690 86.25 31.0714
Assuming the population to be normally distributed, test at 5% level of significance
whether to participate actively in school extra-curricular activities is detrimental to one's grades.

5. In a packing plant, a machine packs cartoons with jars. It is supposed that a new
machine will pack faster on the average than the machine currently used. To test that
hypothesis, the times it takes each machine to pack ten cartoons are recorded. The
resulsts, in seconds, are shown in the following table:

New machine Old Machine

42.1 41.3 42.4 43.2 41.8 42.7 43.8 42.5 43.1 44.0
41.0 41.8 42.8 42.3 42.7 43.6 43.5 43.5 41.7 44.1

Total Mean Variance

Do the data provide suffiicient evidence to conclude that, on the average, the new machine packs
faster? Perform the required hypothesis testing at the 5% level of significance.
