Cinematography is more than photography. It’s
the process of taking ideas, words, actions,
emotions, tone and forms of other nonverbal
communications and rendering them in VISUAL
TERMS.

Here we use as CINEMATIC TECHNIQUE. It’s the

entire range of methods and techniques that we
use to add layers of meaning and subtext to the
“content” of the film:- the casts, sets, dialogues
and actions. This is the heart of collaboration of the
DoP and the Director to conduct the techniques,
the tools and the variations are wide ranging in
scope.

BUILD A VISUAL WORLD FOR CINEMA

Do you remember the early sequence

from Blade Runner (1982)?

The movie transports us into a high-

t e c h f u t u r i s t i c w o r l d w i t h fl y i n g c a r s
and giant electric signs. We become
aware of the social structure because
of the squalid street life and
extravagant skyscrapers.

Also, the constant rain tells us about

the shifting climate.

VISUAL WORLD FOR CINEMA
:- (Case study)

Ever wonder that these movies exist in an

identifiable universe because of locations, sets,
wardrobe, and even sounds?

The movie transports us into a high-tech futuristic

world with flying cars and giant electric signs. We
become aware of the social structure because of
the squalid street life and extravagant skyscrapers.
Also, the constant rain tells us about the shifting

VISUAL WORLD FOR CINEMA
:- (Case study)

In a scene, we see Deckard is picked up by the

police in a flying car. But once we are in the police
headquarters, we don’t feel in a futuristic world
anymore. Then Deckard with the trench coat and
upturned collar gives the final clue — a scene
resembling a film noir detective story.

That’s how the director and cinematographer

worked together to show through visuals that it’s
an old-fashioned detective noir in a high-tech
futuristic setting with flying cars, replicants and a
femme fatale.

BUILD A VISUAL WORLD FOR CINEMA
:- (Case study)

Nothing is left to chance in the creation of Pandora

(the fictional world of James Cameron’s two
movies). Everything is designed to be lucid. The
movie production used the techniques of camera
shooting, editing, capturing faces, and visual
effects, which amaze almost any viewer. Cameron
touched on the resounding theme of human
cruelty, showing what people are ready to do for
profit.

Building a fictional world as if it were a real world,

imagining in broad-terms its biology and physics
and how they might affect the characters’ action
and thus the plot. And do everything backwards,
starting with the plot and the needs of the
characters.

VISUAL WORLD FOR CINEMA

Pandora has a lower gravity than Earth, stemming

from the presence of several moons. This was the
first decision, the one everything descends from. It
could have been forced even further and moved
further away from the laws of Earth’s physics.

and richness when everything, including emotions,
is at its maximum.

Creating regardless of realism (beyond the bare

minimum) or credibility. Conversely, James
Cameron – the modern filmmaker in the 1990s –
has always known that creating a world to set
multiple movies, spin-offs and so on in, makes
sense and can stand the test of time if it is complex
and lucid.

One important lesson is that as a filmmaker, you
will do everything to bring the perfect visual world
but remember not to choose anything randomly.
Random choices will not help you to tell your story.

How to accomplish the goal of visual

world-building?
Cinema is a language like English, if we simplify it.
We learn grammar, vocabulary, sentence structure,
etc. to speak English.

Similarly, we will look at six conceptual tools to

understand visual storytelling that every filmmaker
in the world uses to make cinema.

Light And Color
Light and color draws emotions to connect with
viewers such as music and dance are the two art-
forms that are inseparably tied. These are the most
versatile, potent, powerful, and flexible tools.
A DoP’s most of the time is used precisely
operating to manage light and color. This tool
creates a sense of depth, meaning and as well
three dimensionality.

• Color with Light

Different light is placed and how to make more
consistent scenes or images through color.
Complementary colors are a great way to further
enhance your images.

• Color Correction
Remove the complexities from correcting colors in
shadows, mid-tones and highlights. At times,
highlights are too warm or too saturated and need
to be treated separately from other areas of an
image.

• Creates An Atmosphere
The additional of fog, dust, rain and powder to
your images can add very interesting atmosphere
and depth.

• Remove Distractions
Refine your images by removing unwanted
distractions. Master multiple techniques that will
allow you to remove literally anything leaving only
the focal points you decide.

• Sharpen
Sharpening different areas of your scenes to draw
attention to where it’s needed. Sometimes the
most subtle details can make the impact.

• Retouch Light
Keep your shot clean and more focused by
perfecting the light. Adding and removing lights
can require a lot of detailed retouching.

The Lens:

Mold Perception to Tell Your Story

- Focus more on how lenses portray

images.

A lens is a powerful tool of visual

storytelling, the enchanting abilities of
optics mold our perception of the
tangible world. Much like a character
in a narrative, each lens possesses a
distinct personality. A lens can
influence the contrast and sharpness
of an image, but it all depends on the
lens’ focal length.

The Lens:

David Fincher used a long lens to shoot the

climactic scene in Seven? The long lens has
compressed the wide space and made the towers
almost overlap. The visual metaphor for the scene
is a trap like a ‘spider’s web’. The powerful scene
describes how the good characters are moving in
the middle of a horrific game of a psychopath.

The Lens:

Show the Audience What You Want

In filmmaking, selecting the frame is the

fundamental act. It will give you the power to
direct the audience’s attention to a definitive point
on the screen.
For an example in the movie “The Sunset
Boulevard -1950”:- The film opens with narration.
Group of police
officers and
photographers
gathers around
a pool. A victim
floats face down.
It belongs to T h e S u n s e t B o u l e v a r d - 1 9 5 0
Joe Gillis, who happens to be the above-
mentioned narrator. The movie opens with our
main character dead and then flashes back to tell
the rest of the story.

Movement

Movement defines emotions. Just like dance, films are

another form of art that uses motion, time and space.

In filmmaking, the movement of a camera is a powerful

technique for DoP and directors. Without cutting the
scene, filmmakers can use camera movement to cause
changes in frame or perspective.

Some renowned camera movements are -

• Static Pan • Tilt • Push In • Pull Out

• Dolly Zoom • Roll • Tracking Shot • Arc Shot
• Boom Shot • Random Movement • Zoom

Every filmmaker uses these movements to create an

engaging and immersive storytelling experience.

In filmmaking, there are multiple types of camera

movement. Each camera movement can create specific
emotions, ideas, and psychological effects on the
viewers.

Visual Texture

Colors and textures manipulates our mindset

Some of the ploys to add texture to scenes are -

• Changing the color and contrast of the images

• Using simple effects like fog, smoke or flickering
lights
• Desaturation and image manipulation during
post-production

Image: (‘spirits in the TV ‘– Static Effects)

- Poltergeist 1982

A cinematographer can manipulate visual texture

using a camera, lighting, mechanical effects and as
mentioned using proper software’s during post-
production.

Build Your Visual World with a Great First Shot

In verbal storytelling conveying important background

information is the key to keep the viewers engaged.

In filmmaking, using the camera to reveal information is

at the center of visual storytelling. It is always preferable
to use the camera as a cinematic way to tell your story
rather than dialogue or voice-over.

Making it a true "learning experience" for audiences of

all ages. The Zulu version of "Circle of Life" melds into
English as the savanna awakens to a new morning. The
animals slowly make their way to Pride Rock where they
are greeted by the newborn Simba.

Filmmaking needs mixing and coordinating artistic

and technical elements. A cinematographer has to
deal with cameras, lenses, file types, and workflow
and also be mindful and artistic about the visual
world and storytelling.

As a filmmaker, the most crucial aspect of a

filmmaking project is to solve a visual puzzle. They
must fill the blank spot with artistic inspiration.

It is a business of making things happen by using

artistic ideas and implementing them in real-world
film sets and it’s challenging to make dreams
come alive but in the end, IT’S ALL SATISFYING !
