ROBERT PALMA, Pres.
1983 is a very important year for HIGHWAY CHILE
as their debut album STORYBOOK HEROES was released
in January. The group has been on the road for se-
veral years now and they started to smell success
in 1981 when they did a club tour of Holland with
over 100 gigs.
HIGHWAY CHILE got their contract with Lark when
they had done several support gigs for Y&T, Raven,
Jaguar and Motorhead and got promising reviews in
pepers like Aardshok. From January 21, 83, HIGHWAY
CHILE have been on the road in the Benelux to pro~
mote the album, The LP is a damn good debut for a
young band like HIGHWAY CHILE, although some Saxon
and Priest influences can be heard. Carol, the bal-
lad Endless Trail, and Headbangers are the stand-
out tracks, but that does not mean that the others
are not worth listening to, no way mate!
Go to the nearest record shop and check out the
album, SYORYBOOK HEROES and remember: the name of
the band is HIGHWAY CHILE, they'll be huge!!!

The mid-to late seventies are generally concidered the ‘hungry’ years of
heavy metal. I rementer dDving the lone hunter on the prowl, constantly lurking
and seeking for that next Scorpions or Ufo album. Yet it was during these few
years that some of the greatest metal classics were recorded by some of that
time's finest musicians around. Do you remeber Ufo's Lights Out, Sad Winge Of
Destiny by Judas Priest, Rainbow's Rising and virgin Killer by the Scorpions?
Do you remember the debuts of Starz or Armageddon? Of course you do!
Then came the big reviva.! Hundreds of new bands were suddenly releasing
records, many bad and many very good indeed. Yet no cne could ever come uj
with that distingished masterpiece to Join the ranks of the above. Many cam
close, like Iron Maider cr Diamond Head, but it wasn't until I heard the new
Hcly Diver LP that 1 was convinced. Yes! Today it is still possible to find
that instant classic for all time. Ronnte James Dio ts back and Holy Diver t®
the album of the year! |
Ronnie has put together a killer line-up and certainly puts then throw
the paces, while bringing out the best from every one of them. Drummer Vinnit
Appice and Jimmy Bain on bass are the best rhythm section I've heard in many
years and ex-Sweet Savage guitarist Vivian Campbell is, simply, a star! Nex!
to John Sykes, he must be the next super hero of the metal axe!
Featuring nine songs, Hoty Diver kicks of with "Stand up and Shout", the!
all-out rocker that sets the pace ani fee! for the entire album. "Rainbow 1
the Lark", "Shame on the Night", "Gypsy" and the incredible title track have,
all that brilliantly tingling epic touch to them, while "Don't Talk to Stri
gers” must be the greatest metal song since "Stargazer"! Opening with a ver!
haunting guitar intro that sends shivers down your spine, it suddenly explo-~
des into a metal tour de force power-riffing, leaving you spelled for itfel ll
All these are the kind of master pieces that other groups can hope for only
once in their carreers.
The sound is rich and full-bodied, Ronnie Dio handling the production
with style and amazing ease. Clearly influenced by the master, Martin Sire!
he makes Holy Diver sound heavier than hell itself. The album creates that
unique feel of striking a rare, yet perfect balance between the blisterinr
force of the NWOBHM and the classic songwriting abilities of the seventies
super groups. Long live rock'n'roll, long live DIO,....forever!.....

IRON MAIDEN
"Pigce Of Mind"
(Capitol) by John Strecnansky *#*#
All of us have been waiting a long time for this new cffering by what ts —
today one of the world's biggest groups, but has 1! been worth tt? I'd say yes.
While 1t stills falls short of reaching the high standaré of the Maiden/D?Ani
material, I do like it better than last year's Number Of The Beast.
‘This time around, the writing has been distributed throughout the band, ip
stead of lying heavily on Steve Harris' shoulders. iience, Piece Of Mind displ
a greater depth than its predecessor and by far more feeling, but do leave |
up to Harris to write the albums strongest compositions. "Where the Eagies Du
is a straight forward riff-rocker in the old tradition, while "To Tane a Lan
is an epic that could almost rank alongside "Phantom cf the Opera". Sruce Di
Anson contributed four songs to this album, drasticaly altering Maiden's lyr
teal imagery. While early Maiden classics describes the dark medieval tines.
The new songs drift even further back to the myths of long ago. ("Quest for
Pire", or "Plirht of Icarus").
Musically, the band is as close to perfection as humanly possible. ™
Birche's flawless production sets new standards, dut doesn't this take away thy
fire and excitement that filled every single groove on that now historic first)
Maiden album?
Piece Of Mind will for sure be accused of being the most commercial fatden|
LP to date, but the group is by far not selling out. Harris and Co. are defin~
dtely producing some of the finest metal in the world and this more accessible)
new sound will open new doors, and win over even more loyal followers.

URIAM HEEP "dead Firat” (Mercury) by Tim Korot «#*#
This 16th Uriah Heep album offers probably the best line-up and select:
of songs 5 @ classic David Byron days. True, the sound 1s definitly al-
mec at the US audience, The songs are FM radio oriented, but there isn't any-
thing wrong with that; it's the music that counts the most.
‘The line-up of Peter Goalby (vocais); Mick Box (guitars); John Sinclair,
(keyboards); Bob Daisley (bass) and Lee herslake (drums) puts on a solid per-
formance, Box shines on lead guitarand vocalist Goalby still hasn't ;ost his
touch since his Trapeze days. The rhythm section ts superb, most notably the
incredible bass sound from Bob Laisley
The best cuts on the album are"Love Is Blind"(which 1s getting a lot of
airplay), “Lonely Nights" (written by irian Adams!) and "Strairht through the
heart" (no relat‘on to the Dio song).

(Arista Records)
by Debbye Bullock ####
Wow! Wow! Wow! This ts it! Hang on to your neck! Because coming to grab
you by the throat 1s the new album by metal maniacs Krokus, savagely titled
Head Hunter, an LP that 1s only for the strong at heart and true ‘eadbangers.
Ripping through songs like "Eat The Rich", "Night Wolf" and the incredi-
ble title track “Head Hunter", Krokus are as raw and roudy as ever. At first
L was a bit hesitant about the loss of Freddy Steady, but new drunmer Steve
Pace (ex-Whitford/[Link]) hits those skins just a8 fast and furious as Mr.
Steady hinself could.
. Remember the remake of Guess Who's “American woman" on the One Vice At A
Time UP? Well, the lads did it again! This time, the blokes tortured the BTO
hit “Stayed Awake All Night" to aew and greater hights. Other hirhiights on
the album include "Ready To Burn" with Rob Halford on backing vocals and the
closing track, "fussian Winter", an all out manic song that kinda hits you
like dynamite would. And let's not forget "Stand And Be Counted"and the most
sful commercial song “Screaming In The Night". If ycu hear any Krokus
the radio, it {s to be this one,
Mare Storace can still sing his heart out and till his blood boils, with
all the rterce power and energy of a true rock'n'roller. Krokus have never
let me down, and they never will, not !f they keep putting out records like
Head Hunter 1s a definite albun to have. If you don't have this kick=

CULPRIT on the looses
A mysterious force has erupted in recent years
in the North-West of the United States.A force so
powerfull, it is capable of conquering this whole
world! - No, I am not talking about Mt. [Link],
I am refering to a force even more awesome, mere
threatening, but much more pleasureable! It isa
Heavy Metal Force!!!
Many bands have recently emerged in this crim-
inaly ignored area of the States, bands like TKO,
Pirate, Wild Dogs, Queensryche, Black&Blue and o-
thers. But 1983 is the year for the newest metal
heroes from Seattle, CULPRIT!!!
CULPRIT's roots go back a couple of years ago,
to two Seattle bands Amethyst and Orpheus, mostly
school bands, earning smail change at dances, pa-
rties and picknics. One day, at an outdoor party,
the two bands decided to join forces. A new group
was formed consisting of Jeff LeHeureux (vocals),
Kjartan Kristofferson (guitar), John DeBolt (also
guitar), mad-man Scott Earl (bass) and drum - wiz
Bud Burrill.
The idea for naming the band CULPRIT came from
Jeff, as he explains. "Do you remember the South-
hill rapist? It was the biggest ever trial here!
Scott, Jeff, Kjartan, John on top of Bud!!!
!DTYdTNI
uqad oTd
It was totaly crazy! I was there on, yes, jury duty,
sitting through the whole thing! He ended up doing
three consecutive life sentences plus 150 years. He
was the guilty one, a Culprit, guilty as charged. I
thought, 'Culprit', hot name for a band, and we all
agreed to it."
The first original they wrote together wasGuilty
As Charged which is now a highlight of their perfo-
rmance,
CULPRIT's first gig was opening up for favorites
TKO and received plenty of hype from papers as The
Rocket, Aardschok and Metal Rendez-Vous. (#3!) ~~
From October 61 to February 82, the band decided
to record their first demo which included such hits
as Guilty As Charged, Ambush and Players. The later
impressed Mike Varney so much that he chose it for
the great US METAL II compilation.
By now CULPRIT had a large enough following that
they were chosen to play alongside Rail and exHeart
Roger Fisher. "We blew 'em away!", Scott remembers
that night. Soon, Mike Varney invited them to play
in San Francisco,
"That was our first ever gig outside of our home
town", Scott continues. "We played with Cinema and
Wild Dogs. At that time we did a couple of re-makes
like Wrathchild and Gamma's Action. The only cover
we still do today is Radar Love.
The band returned to San Francisco in spring '83
to full fill another dream. They began to record an
album for Shrapnel Records! The record is due July
1st and will be called GUILTY AS CHARGED. In addit-
ion to the title track, it includes eight more cuts
like Iee In The Back, Fight Back, I Am, Ambush, and
of course Players. Talking about the album, I quite
easily noticed the lack of devil lyrics.
"Yeah, that's right!" explains Jeff. "We are not
into exploiting Satan, because he is strong enough
to do this himself. But, we do believe he [Link]
you believe in God, you also must believe in Satan!
What we like to sing about is the positive side of
life. We have these 'go for it!'-songs. Fight back
for what you believe in and for what you want to do
and can do. We like to show both sides of a story."
The sound of the album is very powerful, highli-
-_ghted by the tremendous drumming of Bud Burrill. i
have raved plenty about this great musician in all
my past reviews, so let's hope that this record'11
thrust him into the spotlight. The whole band is a
unique breed of people, all classy musicians deli-
vering metal powerful enough to burst your head to
pieces, yet melodic enough to truly move your emo-
tions. I believe that this debut album willclearly
prove this point. - Next, I asked about their in-
fluences, expecting the typical Van Halen/Led Zeps
in their answers, but was quite surprised as Jeff
explained hastily.
“we're all influenced by each other! Everybody
has his own ideas and talents and it rubbs off. We
all tend to critisise each other, to get better as
a band, All our songs are five-men efforts!"
On a more personal basis, Scott lists Kiss and
Motley Crue as two of his faves. "I didn't touch a
bass until I heard KISS ALIVE!", Jeff's influences
are also quite different
like the Beatles, Robert
Fripp, Guess Who, Three
Dog Night!
CULPRIT are indeed an
impressive band as musi-
cians and as people. If
these five don't make it
then there is something
wrong, with the music bu-
siness! The album should
be out soon, so go check
it out. You will forsure
remember this record for
a long time. GUILTY AS
CHARGED - truly a_ heavy
metal sentence for life!

THRUST
THRUST means "to pierce with a sudden forward
motion" and this five-piece from Illinois did it
when the band was formed in 1979 and quickly be-
came the favorites in the Chicago area. The band
consists of guitarists CB Sebastian and Ron Cook,
frontman John Bonata, bassist Price Sowers and a
drummer by the name of Ross Cristao.
by Tim Korot
When the band was formed, John Bonata played
drums, but when original singer Roger LaFever de-
cided to leave, John took on the vocals himself.
Now, the band needed a drummer! Three weeks till
a gig with Judas Priest, Ron Cristao was chosen
and the concert went very well indeed!
On vinyl, THRUST released the ROCK FOR POLAND
LP on Erect Records but the group wasn't pleased
with the album. John Bonata: "We had no say what
so ever in the album. We didn't pick the chosen
songs, we didn't hear the tapes, we did not have
any say on the mix! Erect Records is a joke of a
record company. We hate the record!"
Things have been bright for the group. since.
The band is now equipped’ with a new demo featur-
ing songs like Heavier than Hell, Overdrive and
Torture Chamber. With titles like these, you can
be sure of some intense heavy metal! If they can
keep writing stuff like that, there is no doubt
in my mind that THRUST will go all the way.....

This New Jersey quintet released a single back
in December 82 called Girls will be Girls; unfor-
tunately it got a bad review in Kerrang #34. Dave
Dickson must have forgotten that his job is revi-
ewing music and not a band's appearance. To make
a long story short, don't hesitate and go get the
single! It's killer!

Mercyful Fate
The recent one week excursion that MERCYFUL FATE
made to the U.K. was initially to record the mucho-
talked-about recording session for the BBC. But as
this would take less than a day, MERCYFUL FATE sla-
ted in two gigs as well, one at the Moonlight club,
the second at the Clarendon in Hammersmith.
The band also made a couple of appearance's at a
record store in London and this is where I had the
opportunity to speak with the group. At first, FATE
were to record an album with Rave-On Records, while
in fact they pulled out of the contract at the last
minute. Although the company say they havent a clue
as to why the band decided to do this, the FATE ar-
gue that they haven't had any control in what their
producer did!
Right now, the group is looking for a small ind-
ependent label in Europe to do their record as soon
as possible. As they do this, MERCYFUL FATE will be
able to show some of their latest product to major
record companies in hope of getting a good contract
for the future. So do we at Metal Rendez-Vous!
When the album does get released, it will be en-
titled INTO THE COVEN, so watch for it!

The Indie Label scene for Heavy Metal has long ~
been dominated by Neat and Heavy Metal Records in
the UK. Recently however, a new company has begun
to make its mark; EBONY Records! Equipped with an
own, lavish 24-Track studio, the label has by now
released three compilations and numerous 45s from
the best British and European groups.
It was more than a year ago that EBONY apeared
on the battlefront with the release of METAL FAT-
IGUE, a various artist collection of bands. inclu-
ding the monsterous Headhunter and one of the top
bands signed to the label, Savage. Two more discs
followed, namely METALLIC STORM (with Wells Fargo $

the incredible sounds of Chateaux). It is now the _ HANDOM BLACK (pic courtecy Ebony Records)

classy cover, depicting a beastial metal warrior song like Destiny, Sinner will soon challange the
crown of Savage as EBONY's best!
METAL WARRIORS is once again produced by Daryl
Johnston, the in-house genius at EBONY. Darryl is
also in charge of recording the debut LP's by the
label's two finest groups, Savage & Chateaux. The
Savage album is called Loose'n Lethal, while Cha-

The gig was supposed to be a party for a close
friend, but turned into a night of metal mayhem!
GLACIER, a new band from Portland, was playing
to a crowd that knew what it wanted and the group
delivered. GLACIER is made up of Pat Goebel, Sam
Easley (both guitar), Loren Bates (drums), Scott
Prinzing (bass, vocals). The crowd was small, but
GLACIER played as if it was The Garden! With such
songs as Hell Bent For Leather, Run To The Hills,
and Ready To Rock, they played with a fury that'd
make K.K., Michael or Dave look on with [Link]
followed Sam's instrumental, Atilla The Hun, that
definitely lets you know GLACIER means business!!
Pat used to play drums, but always liked gui-
tars. After a while he picked one up and decided

TARE ROCKS
LAAZ ROCKIT is a band that you should be hearing
from in the future, The group hails from San Franc-
isco, actually, the East Bay. LAAZ ROCKIT is a hard
driving metal machine that will eat all other metal
bands for lunch!?!
This five-piece demolition squad plays all their
Marshalls set on ten. Loud, but clear is the band's
outlook towards the sound quality. They feel anyone
can and will lose their sound to anything less than
a first class sound system,
The ROCKIT has a dual axe attack in Aron Jellum,
and Phill Kettner. They both make use of the Flying
V. To watch these two axe warriors live on stage is
shear feast for your eyes! Holding down the bass of
this metallic tour-de-force is Dave Starr. He's the
driver of the stage show. Michael Coons is the sin-
ger of the group, and I must admit that he is oneof
the top vocalists on the scene today. ROCKIT have a
new drummer and his name is Vic Angello. I have yet
to see Vic, but the reports we have received at the
office claim that Vic is totally rad-ic-al! And he
can play, too.....
LAAZ ROCKIT have the most outrageous stage show
around. They all make use of cordless systems which
enables them to roam and stalk the stage like true
metal knights. ROCKIT also boost a $25,000 light e-
xtravaganza! Experiencing this in a small nite club
is out of sight. The band turns the show into small
battle fields. Flash bombs, a lighted drum riser to
blind everyone and enough dry ice to fog up all San
Francisco.
Even with all these effects, it doesn't matterat
all if the songs don't cut it. Well, the songs this
band performs, rip through your eardrums like a ca-
non shell through an armored truck! Heavy, fast, in
the Judas Priest school of Heavy Metal. The songs:
Prelude To Death, heavy, HEAVY, H.E.A.V.¥! Asassins
fast and tons of raw force, Clash Of Steel, ripping
leads, furious bass, dive-bombing drums!
LAAZ ROCKIT are here to stay and
to demolish your ears for good! Another kickass and
killer band from the City By The Bay.....Photos by:

Ahh, Arizona. Home of the cactus, stucco and a
scorching sun. - Aaarrrggghhh, Arizona, home of a
Heavy Metal band called SURGICAL STEEL.
SURGICAL STEEL was formed in 1979 by guitarist
John Aquilano and bassist Greg Chaisson who since
has left the band to join a reformed Legs Diamond,
Later, guitaris Jim Keeler and drummer Bob Millan
joined S.S.
The group was aiming at a Priest/Leppard sound
and needed a vocalist. Now you know that a singer
like Rob Baby aren't a dime a dozen. After months
of searching and no luck, S.S. split up. and evary
one went his own way into other bands.
With time and some shuffling, a new band emer-
ged consisting of Jim, Greg, Bob and new members
Paul Kosanovich (guitar) & Harvey Van Kirk on vo-
cals. They went from the name KNIGHTWING back to
SURGICAL STEEL.
Soon after, the song Rivit Head was written to
be heard on the METAL MASSACRE II LP. Turn up the
knob to volume 10!
Being Arizona's biggest metal band, S.S. were
asked to open shows for the likes of Krokus, Fist,
Uriah Heep and LA rockers Sarge & Stormer,
Rob Halford took a liking to this band and de-
Debbye Bullock

cided to [Link] them on several occasions. Can
you imagine, how new vocalist Jeff Martin must've
felt having his idol on stage? "A bit nervous" he
would say, and to top it off, the first time that
Halford jammed with S.S. was the first time Jeff
sang on stage with $.S.!
Things change again and they lose Greg to Legs
Diamond. Soon they find bassist Marc Laymen.
SURGICAL STEEL have just finished recording an
album. There are lots and lots of surprises here,
but I promised not to say a word about them. I am
positive that this debut LP is going to shatter
glass and ear drums at the same time!
Keep your ears open and your eyes peeled 'cause
the SURGICAL STEEL LP is due out soon.

THIN LIZZY "Thunder and Lightning" *#*4**
Another outstanding track from the newest and un-
fortunately last Lizzy LP. This one is for total
headbanging pleasure! Lizzy haven't sounded so o-
ver the top in years. Just listen to the mindblo-
wing axe attac of Gorham and Sykes, or the maniac
keyboard passage by Darren Wharton! Single of the
month, once again by Thin Lizzy!
IRON MAIDEN "Flight of Icarus" ***%
I hoped to make this one the single of the month,
but it seems like, Maiden are suffering from the
fourth album syndrome (!?), What Im trying to say
is that the group has come up with their most co-
mmercial song ever, The heavy riff is still there
but I prefer Prowler to this anytime.
AVATAR "City beneath the surface" ****
Have you noticed how more and more American bands
try to sound like their UK counterparts? Well, A-
vatar is the newest of this kind and they do very
well indeed. The early Sabbath influence is defi-
natly there, while the Devil lyrics will make the
Fate proud of these boys! Two songs on the B-side
make this a very good deal. Go grab it!
MOTORHEAD "I got mine" ***%
It will take some time to get used to this record
by Motorhead. Like the Maiden single, this one is
very commercial, no, more accessible is the right
word, The addition of Brian Robertson has opened
new doors for Lemmy and he uses this to full cap-
acity. The guitar work is truly superb, yet I can
find a dozen Thin Lizzy songs using quite similar
riffing. But don't worry, they still headbang!
RAPID TEARS "Headbang" ***
This Canadian five piece has created a lot of at-
tention in recent months, but I just can't imagi-
ne what the fuzz is all about. The single is very
bland, the weak production covers up power, style
or whatever else the group might display live on
stage. Maybe the LP will turn out better, because
the B-side shows some potential.
CHRONICLES OF ROCK!!!
by John Strednansky
—$S— ———
As with the NWOBHM, the so-called glam-rock re-
vival is not really a revival at all. It has been
with us throughout the years since its roots back
in the early seventies. One of the longest lasting
glam bands was also the movement's most important,
and most influential, and most successful. SWEET's
carreer lasted fifteen glorious years before they
disbanded in late 1982.
Mostly known for their many million-selling hit
singles, SWEET have also build up a very loyal fan
following dedicated to the group's quite distinged
album music. Over all those years, SWEET have pro-
duced a wide variaty of rock, ranging from the Top
Of The Pops teen hits to the menacing metal force
of such greats as Into The Night.
SWEET first formed in 1968 by vocalist and lea-
der Brian Connolly and drummer Mick Tucker from a
group called the Wainwright's Gentlemen(which also
included Ian Gillan at that time!). They were soon
joined by bassist Steve Priest and guitarist Andy
Seott. Here is the full SWEET story:

by Ian Clear.
Let me introduce you to SATAN, a young and very
powerful band, one of the names to look out for in
1983,
In 1981, a group was formed by guitarists Steve
Ramsey and Russ Tippins in their home town of New-
castle. In November 1981, the band with Russ,Steve
and bassist Graeme English recorded for the first
time at Guardian Studios. Two of the tracks ended
up on the compilation album ROXCALIBUR,the two be-
ing Opression and The Executioner, The other were
released on the self financed single,Kiss of Death
and Heads Will Roll, in June 1982. The 1000 copies
pressed were sold out by February 1983.
Later, the line-up became unstable with drummer
Andy Reed and singer Trev Robinson [Link]
SATAN soon incorporated new members and in Nov.'82
decided to record new material with their new sin-
ger, Ian Swift. A cassette album called appropriat
Into the Fire emerged and made available to public
demand. The band have a lot planned for 83 and the
new tape clearly shows that SATAN have all the mu-
sical potential of becoming a big name soon.....
the SATAN talks!
What are your influences behind the band, both
mustealy and religiously?
SWIFT: The band is influenced by sniffin girl's
bicycle seats.
STEVE: Tchiakovsky and Beethoven!
Why don't these show in the music?
SWIFT: Have you ever tried playing a bicycle
seat? I don't think so!
What do you think of your demo tape?
BEAN: Straight up and hellish!
Why have you come to Holland?
SWIFT: Because they ride more bikes here.
Is the next album having anything to do with
bieyecles?
BEAN: Yes, it's called "Pedal to Hell".
Why ie Russ ealed 'Tornado'?
STEVE: Because he passes wind on stage!
Does this make him play better?
STEVE: Only if he is miked up.
what do you think of Holland and the audience
last night at the Dynamo (Eindhoven)?
STEVE: Holland is as flat as a witche's tit and
the audience were a right bunch of Honkin' Hektors.
Is it true, you have been sponsored by Raleigh?
STEVE: Dogafrognoshen!!!
What are your plans for the future?
BEAN: To build a perfect world and help old
people!.....

JAGUAR was formed in Bristol in December of 79.
Garry Pepperd (guitar) and Jeff Cox (bass) included
an add in the paper and drummer Chris Lovell joined
them, After the group's first gigs in Holland, Paul
Merril came into the band, replacing original voca-
list Rob Reiss.
Here now is the interview our men in Holland, on
the spot, managed to get for Metal [Link]
was conducted early this year, prior to the release
of a brand new album from JAGUAR.
What happened since we last met you?
Well, we released a single called Axe Crazy that
was recorded in April 82 and it came out in August
or something like that. It sold very well! We then
did our debut album, again with Neat [Link] was
recorded in November and will be out [Link] album
is going to be called POWER GAMES.
How was Axe Crazy and War Machine accepted?
JAGUAR's Garry Pepperd I think it went quite
well, but beter sales
abroad, It was putout
at the wrong time,too
When we released this
there were all sorts
of records out, Rain-
bow, Gillan, MSG, so
obviously we did not
get into the charts.
In which countries
will the album be re-
leased?
Worldwide!
What will happento
JAGUAR next?
Hopefully we will
tour Holland, Belgium
and Germany with Hel-
lanbach and Raven. It
will be sometimes in
March.
Will you put outa
new single from POWER
GAMES?

We hope so! But that has yet to be negotiated on
Dave Wood's terms (Neat's manager). Hopefully there
will be a single in a couple of months after the LP
is released. We may even record a new song for it.
Could you tell us more about the baekground from
the songs on the new album?
On fhe Fox, Garry came up with this riff that is
really hard and agressive. We wanted to write some-
thing about fox hunting, because it is such a ritu-
al in England. You know, when you've got lot of mo-
ney, you go fox hunting. Shit, I mean we hate that
crap, there is no point in it! As the song sais, it
is just snobbery!
Could you mention you favorite musicians?
My favorite drummer is Leonard Haze of Y&T. Also
1 like Tommy Aldridge.
I like a lot of singers for different reasons. A
singer like Bruce Dickinson, he's got a lot of guts
and power and a great range. He sings right up here
and way down there, it's like a whallop right betw-
een the eyes. Ian Gillan I like a lot, because he's
my main influence. You know, when I was younger, I
thought, Christ, how can he do that?!? Glenn Hughes
sings with a lot of feeling, Paul Rodgers, too.
What was it like, touring with The Rods?
We supported More, the Rods and [Link] two
latter were at the Marquee. They went very well for
us, actually. The Rods gig was great! The place was
packed, because the Rods had just finished support-
ing Iron Maiden. The More gig, that was up there in
Mansville, which is sort of Midlands. Not too many
people turned up for that one.
In the promo sheets, it's mentioned that Lovell
is righthanded, but plays drums lefthanded.
He is weird like that!
Yes, I've always been funny. Actually, my first
kit was given to me on my sixteenth birthday and it
was reversed! It's not my fault! The guy who taught
me how to play said I should try to play lefthanded
and I did, and it was really great!
Thank you very much, till next time...ROCK ON...

BLUE CHEER
Way back, in 1966, when the rock scene was strongly dominated by pop rock,
the San Fran¢isco bay area was starting to jreak out! Several new tands emerged
from an acid {llusion and created an amazing new rock phenomenon with totaly
heavy psychadelic music. The one band that stood out from all the rest was a
three-piece power trio called BLUE CiIEER. The name cane from a brand of acid,
that Augustus Owsley, a San Francisco chemist/student, was distributing ercund
the Bay Area.
The three musicians were Leigh Stephens (guitars), Dickie Peterson (on bass)
and Paul Whaley (drums), BLUE CHEER were the first of sll the heavy power trios.
They started out playing the San Francisco/Marin County clut circuit. In 1967,
the band's first album VINCEBUS ERUPTUM blasted onto the scene! This record 1s
a must, and should be owned by anyone into heavy rock. It consists of only six
songs, three on each side. Mostly blues based, the songs are very, very heavy
with a lot of fuzz, feedback, and of course, volume! BLUE CHEER was officially
the loudest band in the world before Deep Purple took thet throne. VINCEBUS
ERUPTUM 1s one of the heaviest classic records ever lais down on vinyl!
BLUE CHEER's second LP, OUPSIDEINSIDE, appeared on the scene in 1968 and was
another power packed mayhem monster, On stage, vhese guys were truly incredible.

some cool Stephens axe work!
After Silver Metre, Leigh Stephens recorded two solo albums, but that magic
heaviness from years befcre was gone. Meanwhile, BLUE CHEER recruited a new an
young guitarist named Randy Holden and recorded their third LP WéW! IE&C
BLUE CHEER! Randy Holden only appears on one side of this gem and it t
deed kicks ass! The other side marked the end of the heavy bLVE CHEER sound
the beginning of BLUE CHEER Phase Two, a hard, country type reck! Pretty damned
sadlI! It was still Peterson and Whaley, but they adzed a couple of new men-
bers to the fold and went down hill.
After NEW! IMPROVED! BLUE CHEER!, Randy Holden recorded his alvum POPULATION

heard to be believed! It has some of the heaviest guitar sounds and ol
will ever get to hear! Thank you very, very much to the Record Vault for turn

DEF LEPPARD
Feb 27, 1983 - Bristol, UK.
It's been two years since DEF LEPPARD last toured
Britain, but the capacity crowd made it clear to all
that they were glad to see the band back.
Rock Goddess had warmed up the crowd, although it
escapes me just how they managed it. DEF LEPPARD how
ever, really delivered the goods.
Having made many fans with the legendary and rare
Getcha Rocks Off EP and increasing the number by re-
cording three fine albums, it was difficult to see,
how they could go wrong. Opening with a new song and
then tearing into the powerful Rock Brigade, DEF LEP
howed no mercy and hammered out one good song after
another. The only pause for breath came with the hit
Bringing On The Heartache and even then the audience
by John Tucker
knew that Switeh 625 would bludgeon them into total
submission yet again.
DEF LEPPARD's days in America have added a touch
of professionalism to their show which was lacking a
bit when I saw them years ago in a sweaty, ugly club
in the middle of nowhere. I expect to see them again
at Reading, this time as headliners; soon I hope.

ARMORED SAINT
April 9, 1983 - Fullerton, CA
Having been told that this band is the best me-
tal outfit out of Southern California, but having
never seen this certain band called ARMORED SAINT,
I attended this show with high expectations. Need-
less to say, the SAINT passed with flying colors.
Relying on the dying art of just playing their
musie, and not making any concessions to the ridi-
culousness of Glam-rock or Satanism, ARMORED SAINT
evoke memories of Maiden and Priest at their best!
But the boys go beyond just rehashing the two afor
mentioned groups by lending their own styly that I
cannot explain in text. It must be heard!
tal
John Bush is by far one of the best heavy me
singers around. However, the band behind John Bush
is far from being upstaged by him, as the sheer e-
nergy of songs as On The Way, False Alarm, or this
writer's favorite Stricken By Fate, and others lay
evidence to.
Admitted1 the show was not without faults, as
their ballad fo Reason To Live just did not match
up with the rest of the high quality displayed du-
ring the entire show. However, be it live on stage
or on record, ARMORED SAINT is the band that will
prove to all of us that, for American metal bands,
there is life after Van Halen!

NIGHT RANGER
June 3, 1983 - Santa Clara, CA.
The sun was out this hot June day at Marriot's
amusement park and so were the tan, blonde women,
and all the to-be guitar heroes to see N.R.
The opening band, Billy Satellite, was dissap-
ointing. They just did not have the energy to ex-
cite the crowd that was hungry for N.R.
Finally, as the sun baked the audience, NIGHT
RANGER took the stage and never gave it back.
With Brad Gillis wearing shorts and sunglasses
and Jeff Watson looking hauntingly like the late
Randy Roads, the dynamic guitar duo let you know,
that flash guitar is the order of the day.
The stage did look a bit strange with all the
drums right up front and sideways. Bassist Blades
supplied most of the physical energy, constantly
moving and singing. Keyboardist Fitz kept himself
in the background supplying the technical fills.
The group works well as a unit, yet the stage
show is dominated by guitars! With two solo spots
from Gillis and Watson and constant guitar flash,
the show couldn't help but be stolen by the Cali-
fornia guitar duo.
The band played all the songs off the most re-
cent album DAWN PATROL and then left the stage to
the crowd's great displeasure. Why not play a new
song, not just the album and leave? Something new
would have made the day for me! But this was. the
only complaint about the concert I had.
Overall, the show was very successful and I am
sure that after a few more months on the road the
mroup will quickly become veterans and only will
{mprove with age. I am looking forward to a brand
new album, because these NIGHT RANGER guys really
mot this rock'n'roll stuff wired!....
