The document outlines three studies focused on sustainable solutions for the Philippines, addressing issues like water scarcity and construction material efficiency. The first study proposes a Smart Atmospheric Water Generator that utilizes humidity for water collection, while the second explores using coconut fibers as a cost-effective reinforcement in concrete. The third study investigates the use of crushed glass as a fine aggregate in paving blocks to reduce waste and provide affordable construction materials.

Title: Development of a Smart Atmospheric Water Generator with Humidity-Based control

and Real- Time Monitoring for Residential Application in the Philippines

Description: The Philippines experiences high humidity throughout the year, particularly during
the rainy season, leading not only to discomfort but also to moisture-related issues in
residential structures such as mold growth, corrosion, and structural material degradation. At
the same time, many communities still face intermittent or limited access to clean water,
especially in rural or off-grid areas.

This study proposes the development of a Smart Atmospheric Water Generator (AWG) that
extracts water from humid air, equipped with humidity-based control and real-time monitoring
sensors. The system automatically activates when the humidity exceeds a set threshold,
optimizing water collection while conserving energy. By integrating humidity sensors, a timer,
and a real-time data display or logger, the device aims to provide a sustainable and alternative
source of clean water for non-potable use, while also helping to reduce indoor humidity in
residential spaces.

The project will focus on the design, fabrication, and performance evaluation of the prototype
and its application for small-scale residential use in the Philippine setting.

Solution: This study aims to address the above problems by designing and testing a Smart
Atmospheric Water Generator that operates based on ambient humidity levels and runs on an
automated time schedule. By using affordable and accessible technology such as:

 Humidity sensors (e.g., DHT22)

 Microcontrollers (e.g., Arduino)

 Water level detectors

 Timers or RTC modules

 LCD or IoT-based monitoring display

The system will automatically adjust its operation to current conditions, activating only when
needed and displaying environmental data in real time.

This setup not only reduces unnecessary power usage, but also provides households with a
small but sustainable supply of water collected from the air — ideal for tasks like flushing,
cleaning, or watering plants. It is envisioned to be especially useful in areas with water
shortages or weak infrastructure, aligning with sustainable practices in civil engineering.

Title: Comparative Study on the Strength and Cost Efficiency of Coconut Fiber Reinforced
Concrete

Description: This study explores the potential of coconut fibers, an abundant agricultural waste
in the Philippines, as reinforcement material in concrete. By partially replacing traditional
reinforcement or enhancing the tensile strength of concrete, this project aims to produce a
more affordable and sustainable construction material suitable for low-cost housing and rural
infrastructure.

Problems/Solution:

 Traditional concrete lacks tensile strength and often requires costly steel reinforcement.
 Coconut husks are widely discarded and underutilized, contributing to waste.
 There's a need for alternative, affordable construction materials in developing areas.
 Integrate coconut fibers into the concrete mix and test its strength and performance.
 Determine optimal fiber proportions that balance strength, workability, and cost.
 Promote coconut fiber concrete as a low-cost, eco-friendly alternative for construction.

Title: Use of Crushed Glass as Fine Aggregate in Paving Blocks: A Sustainable Approach

Description: This research investigates the use of crushed waste glass as a partial replacement
for fine aggregates (sand) in the production of paving blocks. The goal is to reduce
environmental waste while creating durable, aesthetically pleasing, and cost-effective materials
for footpaths and sidewalks.

Problems/Solutions:

 Glass waste is non-biodegradable and contributes significantly to landfill volume.

 Construction sand is becoming scarce and more expensive.

 Local government units lack access to affordable paving solutions.

 Use crushed glass in the paving block mix to replace a portion of fine aggregate.

 Evaluate the compressive strength, durability, and cost of the blocks.

 Promote recycled glass paving blocks as a green, affordable urban infrastructure

solution.
