6 × 10-4 sec-1. The half-life period for the decomposition in seconds is:
(a) 11.55 (b) 115.5 (c) 1155 (d) 1.155
(iii) The half-life period of a first-order reaction is 20 minutes. The time required for
the concentration of the reactant to change from 0.16 M to 0.02 M is:
(a) 80 minutes (b) 60 minutes (c) 40 minutes (d) 20 minutes
(iv) The slope of the line obtained on plotting log K against 1/T is equal to
(a) Ea / R (b) –Ea / R (c) –Ea / 2.303R (d) 2.303R / Ea
(v) For a reaction A→ B +C, when a student X doubled the concentration of ‘A’, the rate
of reaction was found to increase by eight times. The unit of rate constant (k) will be:
(a) s-1 (b) mol-1 L s-1 (c) mol-2 L2 s-1 (d) mol L-1 s-1
III. These questions consist of two statements, each printed as Assertion and Reason.
While answering these questions, you are required to choose any one of the following
four responses.
(a) If both Assertion and Reason are correct and the Reason is a correct explanation of the
Assertion.
(b) If both Assertion and Reason are correct but Reason is not a correct explanation of the
Assertion.
(c) If the Assertion is correct but Reason is incorrect.
(d) If both the Assertion and Reason are incorrect.
(i) Assertion: The slowest elementary step in a complex reaction decides the rate of the
reaction
Reason: The slowest elementary step always has the smallest molecularity.
(ii) Assertion: For a certain reaction, a large fraction of molecules has energy more than
the threshold energy, still the rate of reaction is very slow.
Reason: The colliding molecules must not be properly oriented for effective collisions.
(iii) Assertion: Order of the reaction can be zero or fractional.
Reason: We cannot determine order from balanced chemical equation.
(iv) Assertion: The half- life of a first order reaction does not depend on initial
concentration of the reactant.
Reason: The initial reaction expression is present in the expression for rate constant.
Question 2- [2 mark]
(i) Show that the time required for the completion of 75% of a reaction of the first order is
twice the time required for the completion of 50% of the reaction.
(ii) If the half-life period for a first-order reaction is 69.3 seconds, what is the value of its
rate constant? A substance decomposes by following first-order kinetics. If 50% of the
compound is decomposed in 120 minutes, how long will it take for 90% of the
compound to decompose?
(iii) A first order reaction is 50% complete in 30 minutes at 27oC and in 10 minutes at
47oC. Calculate the reaction rate constant at 27oC and the energy of activation of the
reaction in kJ/mol.
(iv) In a first-order reaction, 10% of the reactant is consumed in 25 minutes.
Calculate:

(b) The time required for completing 17% of the reaction
(v) For a chemical reaction R → P, variation in ln [R] vs time (t) plot is given below: For
this reaction
(a) Predict the order of reaction
(b) What is the unit of rate constant (k)?

Question 3 [3 mark]
(i) The half -life period for decay of radioactive 14C is 5730 years. An ancient piece of
wood has only 80% of the 14C found in a living tree. Calculate the age of the piece of
wood?
(ii) The rate of most of the reactions becomes double when the temperature is raised
from 298K to 308K. Calculate the activation energy. (R=8.314 J K-1 mol-1)
(iii) 20% of a first order reaction is completed in five minutes. How much time will the
60% reaction take to complete? Calculate the half -life period of the above reaction.
(iv) For the reaction: 2H2+2NO⇌2H2O+N2, the following rate data was obtained:

Calculate the following

(a) The overall order of a reaction.
(b) The rate law.
(c) The value of rate constant (k).
(v) A radioactive substance which emits alpha particle follows first order reaction. The
half- life period of this radioactive substance is 30 hours. Calculate the fraction in
percent of the radioactive substance which remains after 90 hours.
(vi) A patient was given a certain amount of iodine-131 as a part of a diagnostic
procedure for thyroid disorder. Given that the half-life of radioactive 131I is 8 days,
what fraction of the initial 131I would be present in a patient after 32 days if none of
it were eliminated through natural body processes?
(vii) Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow
The rate of a reaction depends on the concentration of reactants. The rate law for a
hypothetical reaction aA +bB → cC + dD is rate =k[A]x [B]y when x and y are calculated
experimentally and known as order of reaction. In most cases, the mechanism of a reaction is
not straight forward but broken down in simple elementary steps. These steps represent the
progress of overall reaction at the molecular level.
(a) What will be the order of reaction if the unit of k is mol-2L2s-1?
(b) State any one difference between order of reaction and molecularity of reaction.
(c) For the reaction 2A →B+C, the rate law is, rate =k[A]3\2. What is the order and
molecularity of the reaction?
Question 4 [5 mark]
Read the passage given below carefully and answer the questions that follow
The rate of reaction is concerned with a decrease in concentration of reactants or an increase
in the concentration of products per unit time. It can be expressed as an instantaneous rate at a
particular instant of time and average rate over a large interval of time. Mathematical
representation of rate of reaction is given by rate law. Rate constant and order of reaction can
be determined from the rate law or its integrated rate equation.
(a) What is the average rate of reaction?
(b) Write two factors that affect the rate of reaction.
(c) What happens to rate of reaction for zero order reaction?
(d) What is the unit of k of zero order reaction
