Class 11 Economics Chapter 3 QA

The document discusses Census and Sample Methods of Data Collection in economics, highlighting that the Census method collects data from the entire population, providing accurate information but is time-consuming and costly. In contrast, the Sample method gathers data from a part of the population, which is quicker and less expensive but may involve sampling errors. It also outlines various sampling techniques, their merits and demerits, and the importance of sample representativeness and size for reliability.

Class 11 Economics – Chapter 3: Census

and Sample Methods of Data Collection

1. What do you understand from Census Method?
Census method is a method in which data is collected from each and every unit
of the population. It is also called the method of complete enumeration. It
provides detailed and accurate information as the entire universe is studied.

2. Give Merits and Demerits of Census Method.

**Merits:**
1. Provides complete and accurate data.
2. No sampling error.
3. Ideal for small populations.
4. Provides detailed data.

**Demerits:**
1. Time-consuming and expensive.
2. Requires a large number of investigators.
3. Impractical for large populations.
4. Difficult to manage and organize.

3. Where is Census Method Suitable?

Census method is suitable when:
1. The population is small.
2. High accuracy is required.
3. Every unit’s data is important.
Example: Government’s Population Census.

4. What do you understand from Sample Method? Give merit and demerit.
Sample method is a technique where data is collected from a part (sample) of the
population to draw conclusions about the whole.

**Merits:**
1. Less time and cost.
2. Requires fewer resources.

**Demerits:**
1. May involve sampling errors.
2. Might not represent the population correctly.
5. What are the essentials of a good sample?
1. Representativeness
2. Adequate size
3. Random selection
4. Free from bias
5. Homogeneity

6. Explain different methods of sampling.

1. Random Sampling
2. Systematic Sampling
3. Stratified Sampling
4. Purposive Sampling
5. Quota Sampling
6. Mixed Sampling

7. What do you understand from Random Sampling Method? Merits and

Demerits.
Random Sampling gives each unit equal chance to be selected.

**Merits:**
1. Unbiased
2. Simple

**Demerits:**
1. May not represent entire population
2. Inappropriate for small groups

8. What do you understand from Purposive Random Sampling Method?

Units are chosen intentionally based on the investigator’s judgment.

**Merits:**
1. Time-saving
2. Focused data

**Demerits:**
1. Biased
2. Cannot generalize results

9. Mix Sampling Method – Explain Merit and Demerit.

Combination of two or more sampling methods.
**Merits:**
1. More accurate
2. Reduces weaknesses of individual methods

**Demerits:**
1. Complex
2. Needs expertise

10. Systematic Sampling Method – Explain.

First unit is selected at random, then every nth unit is selected from the list.
Example: Every 5th student in a register.

11. What is Quota Sampling? Merits and Demerits.

Specific quotas are fixed for different groups. Selection is done non-randomly.

**Merits:**
1. Quick
2. Ensures group representation

**Demerits:**
1. Biased
2. Not suitable for scientific research

12. What is the difference between Census and Sample Method?

**Census Method:**
- Entire population
- Accurate but costly

**Sample Method:**
- Part of population
- Cost-effective but less accurate

13. On what reason is reliability of Sampling Method based?

Reliability depends on:
1. Sample size
2. Method used
3. Representativeness
4. Skill of investigator
5. Freedom from bias
