1. INTRODUCTION:

Industrial training is an essential part or engineering education that pro\ ides studenh
with practical exposure to real-world working environments. As part of our academic
curriculum for the Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication Engineering.
we. a team of four members, had the opportunity to undergo an industrial internship at Mysore
Electrical Industries Limited (MEI), Bangalore). a reputed organization specializing i11 the
manufacturing of electrical equipment.

MEI is primarily engaged in the production of switchgear. circuit breakers. and

associated electrical components used in power distribution and protection S) stems. ·1 he
company manufactures products such as MCVCB (Metal Clad Vacuum Circuit Breakers).
PCVCB (Porcelain Clad Vacuum Circuit Breakers), control and relay panels. and various other
high-voltage and medium-voltage products.

During this internship, we were introduced to various industrial departments such ""
Production, Wiring, Assembly, Quality Testing, Purchase. Accounts. Planning. Ma(keting. and
Research and Development (R&D). This training helped us understand the end-to-end process
of manufacturing electrical switchgear, especially focusing on circuit breakers. their assembl)
procedures. testing methods. and quality assurance techniques.

This repott contains detailed observations of our practical learning experience.

knowledge about industrial processes, and technical skills we acquired. The internship helped
us understand both theoretical and practical aspects of switchgear technology and imprO\ cd
our professional skills such as teamwork, communication. and technical hand Iing or

Workin g Mechan ism

• Involves two levers. one of which is the trip cache (blad.. le, er).

• During faults. the lever contact breaks. halting conduct ion.

.
• Bearing s and springs regulate shaft moveme nt, allowing motion in only one direction

• Compre ssed spring energy is used for opening . closing. and tripping operatio ns.

Advant ages of VCB

• Superio r arc-quen ching due to vacuum insulatio n.

• Long lifespan and mainten ance-fre e operatio n.

• No fire or explosio n risks, unlike oil or air-blast breakers .

• Silent operatio n and eco-frie ndly (no gas emission ).

• Ideal for fast. repeated switchin g and fault clearing .

Disadva ntages of VCB

• Unecono mical above 38kV, as multiple units must be connecte d in series .

• High producti on cost for small manufac turing quantitie s .

• Limited commer cial use for high-vol tage aprlicat ions .

Applica tions of VCB

• Most reliable circuit breaker for medium -voltage switchge ar.

• Widely used in:

c Metal-cl ad switchg ear

o Porcelai n-house d breakers

• Commo n in industria l substatio ns. utility net,\ork s. and distribut ion system'>.

5. POTENTIAL TRANSFORM ER (PT):

tran, formcr u,cd to step dm, n high voltage levels to a safe, measurable level for mete~111g_and protect_1on
111 pt)\\er s)stcms. Unlike pOl\er transformers, PTs are connected in parallel to the c1rcu1t they monitor
and are designed to draw very I ittle current, ensuring they do not affect the circuit's performance.
th
•1he primar: purpose of a PT is to provide a secondary voltage that is proportional to e primary (high)
, oltage. maintaining a precise voltage ratio and phase relationship. This allows meters. relays, and other
in,trumenls to accurate!) measure and monitor ,oltage without being exposed to high voltages direct!)-,
enhancing safet) and reliability.

rhere are three main types of Potential Transformers:

I. Electromagnetic PT:
This is the most common type and functions like a small power transformer with wire-wound
coib. It offers high accLiraC) and is generally used for voltages up to I 32 kV.

Capacitor Voltage Transformer (CVT):

CVTs are used for extra high voltages (typically above 132 kV). They work using a capacitive
voltage divider followed by a transformer and are more economical at high voltages due to
reduced insulation and material costs. CVTs also offer better transient response for protection
relays.

3. Optical Voltage Transformer:

This modern type uses the Faraday Effect, where the polarization of light is rotated in
proportion to the electric field. These are used in advanced digital or optical substations and
are suitable for ,ery high-voltage applications with high accuracy and minimal
electromagnetic interference.

In summary, Potential Transformers play a crucial role in voltage measurement, system protection, and
energ) billing by safely stepping down voltages for metering devices. The choice between
electromagnetic. capacitor. or optical PTs depends on the voltage level. application, and cost
