Written Sort and Generalization
Extra Helps
Please note that this sort (pg. 3) could be re-sorted every day while
reading the text that accompanies it. On day 1, the parent or teacher
may take more responsibility to show the child how to sort the words
and on subsequent days, the child takes more responsibility to sort it on
her own.
On one of the days that the child has cut apart and sorted the words
by their pattern, ask her to copy the sort by writing each word into the
Written Sort chart (pg. 4).
The question at the end of the written sort! This is an
important step with word sorts!
While sorting, discuss the patterns that the words in the same column
share. For example, the words in the short e column only have one
vowel (e), while the words in columns two (ee) and three (ea) both
have vowel combinations that make the long e sound.
While word study doesn’t hinge on rules (because these are so easily
“broken”), it does rely on generalizations. Generally speaking, a child can
see that when a word has only one e in it and is surrounded by
consonants (CVC), it makes the short e sound. In general, a word that
has a vowel combination of ee or ea makes the long e sound.
By asking your child to answer this question, you are helping him to
make some generalizations about how word patterns work. And, she
can use these same generalizations for other words in his reading and
writing!

Sight Word Bump
To Prepare:.
• Print off one game board for two players to share.
• Laminate the game board or place in a plastic sleeve protector.
• Each player selects a different colored dry erase marker.
• Each player also needs a list of words from the book. (Feel free to use words from Quick as a
Wink activity.)
To Play:
• Players take turns rolling the 2 dice.
• Players add the numbers on the dice.
• Players then write a word from their spelling list on the game board corresponding with the number
they rolled.
• If the other player already has a word written on the number rolled, you can “bump” their word by
erasing it and writing your word in that space instead.
• If a player rolls a number that already has his word in that numbered space, the player’s turn is
over and the other player takes his turn.
• When all the spaces have words written in, the player with the most words on the game board wins!

Sight Word Go Fish
To Prepare:
• Print off playing cards onto card stock 2 times (By doing this,
you will have four sets of each sight word). Laminating them will
make them more durable for multiple uses.
• Blank cards are also included for you to print and write your
own sight words.
To Play: (for 2-4 players)
• The goal of the game is to get the most matching sets of
sight words. (Four of one word makes a set.)
• Shuffle word cards and place them in a pile face down.
• Players are each dealt 5 cards to start with. All other
cards are placed in a face down draw pile.
• Players take turns asking each other for words they have
in their hands to get a matching set of four. Players may
ask, “Do you have any could’s?”
• If the other player does not have the word card, he says,
“Go Fish.” The asking player draws from the draw pile.
Note: This game is played like
the classic “Go Fish” game.

Quick as a Wink!
A fast-paced reading game
Materials:
*Brown paper bag/sack or other
kind of container (it is important that
players not be able to see through it). ©
*Word cards and Winking picture cards-
print onto cardstock and laminate for durability
To Play: (for 2-4 players)
*Shuffle all the word cards (including 5 winking cards) and place them
in the bag.
*One at a time, players reach into the bag (without looking) and pull
out one card.
*If it is a word card, the player reads the card as quickly as he can and
keeps it.
*But be careful you don’t get a winking card. If the card is a winking
card, the player must return all of his word cards into the bag.
(Winking cards are not put back into the bag).
*The player who has the most word cards when all the cards have been
pulled out of the bag is declared the winner.
