HOW TO USE
THIS MANUAL
INTRODUCTION
“So if the Son sets you free, you will be
free indeed.”
JOHN 8:36

The Bible teaches that believers can and should live

victorious lives. There is a difference between knowing
the truth, believing the truth, and living out the truth.
The truth can only be lived out if we understand and apply
the freedom, victory, and power that comes from Christ.

Victory Weekend is a time to deepen our relationship with

God and focus on establishing the spiritual foundations
necessary for a lifelong walk with Him. It includes times of
worship, Bible teaching, prayer, and personal ministry to
ensure that we understand and walk in the freedom Christ
won for us at the cross.

Page vii

Victory Weekend is a time to establish believers in the faith. In

the discipleship journey, it comes after Engage.

Victory Weekend usually begins with a time of praise and

worship: two very simple and/or familiar songs as most
participants are new believers. This helps people focus on
God working in their lives as the event begins. After the
transition and greeting, you can check if every participant was
able to bring the Victory Weekend manual.

The assumption is that through their Victory group leaders,

each participant was able to prepare for the event by having
finished (without hurrying through) ONE 2 ONE and Preparing
for Victory Weekend. Hopefully, they have also spent some
personal time praying or even fasting.

Students’ notes are put in boxes in this teacher’s manual

for easy reference, and the blanks are already filled. Spaces
for notes in the students’ manual have been removed from
this teacher’s manual. Margins have been added for the
teacher’s use.

Each of the twelve chapters should take an average of thirty

minutes (including any introduction or worship, reflection, or
ministry time) in a span of a day and a half. The chapters are
divided into several headings, though not all stated here are
necessarily used in a given chapter. The possible headings are
as follows:

• Objectives
• Logistical Needs for this Session
• Introduction
• Background
• Teaching Tip
• Explanation
• Illustration
• Transition Point
• Suggestion
• Ministry Moment
• Closing
• Application

The general flow of the chapter headings should be normally

followed. A ten-minute break should be given after every
two chapters.

DAY 1
Purpose 30 minutes
Transformation 30 minutes

Cross 30 minutes
Power 30 minutes

DAY 2

Discipleship 30 minutes

Also, a list of logistical needs is provided for each session
so the teacher and administrative staff or volunteer can
adequately prepare all videos, supplies, and materials.

Removing the times for reflection at the end of each chapter

to give way for a longer teaching session is not recommended.
Ask the participants to answer the questions honestly, without
filtering their answers or skipping questions. Explain that
these answers will be able to help them in their ministry time.

The goal is to be clear and dynamic by creating variety in

content delivery during teaching. However, teachers are
recommended not to improvise on the teaching notes
provided. Foundational truth must be taught in the most
basic way possible, supplemented by the recommended
illustrations. Read and teach the material (the Students’
Manual) rather than improvising, with the Teacher’s Manual
as a reference. Deviation from reading the notes comes with
preparation and mastery. All teachers are encouraged to vary
the methods of teaching, but not at the expense of omitting
content by adding extra-biblical materials.

As a teacher, focus your preparation time on communicating

the key points of each chapter and giving examples or
illustrations that will inspire and encourage the participants.
Not all the illustrations provided have to be used, and you
are encouraged to substitute others with more relevant or
personal illustrations.

It is highly recommended that Scripture narratives used in

explaining points be delivered by storytelling, whereas short
verses may simply be read word for word.

Considering the topics being taught and the audience

demographic, there may be a need to have separate sessions
for high school and university students, and children. Be
sensitive to this need when teaching specific classes.

When the teacher, administrative staff, or volunteer prints the

manuals, they should always print the How to Use this Manual
and Table of Contents along with the required chapters.

1 PURPOSE
Why Victory Weekend?

OBJECTIVES

• To give a brief orientation to the participants of the goal

of Victory Weekend, with emphasis on the foundation

• Chapter 1 is primarily recommended to be an extended

exhortation that creates the atmosphere for spiritual
transformation and builds toward a clear need for
the gospel.

TEACHING TIPS

• Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished

work of Christ on the cross.

• It would be good to keep in mind that although there

is already teaching content in this session, it must be
accomplished in about 10-15 minutes only as to give
more time and emphasis for the main session, which is
the Cross: What God Did for Me.

• There is no need to read John 8:36 at the start as it is

best mentioned in point #2 of the session.

1
• The teacher should emphasize why foundations are
PURPOSE
important. If there is one major emphasis in Chapter 1, it
should be the value of Jesus as the Foundation.
Why Victory Weekend?

“So if the Son sets you free, you will be

free indeed.”
JOHN 8:36

The best way to start Victory Weekend is by reviewing its purpose.

There are three simple reasons for a Victory Weekend:

Page 1
1. Establish Spiritual Foundations (1)

“. . . he is like a man building a house, who dug deep

48

and laid the foundation on the rock. And when a flood

arose, the stream broke against that house and could
not shake it, because it had been well built. 49But the
one who hears and does not do them is like a man
who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell,

one who hears and does not do them is like a man
who built a house on the ground without a foundation.
When the stream broke against it, immediately it fell,
and the ruin of that house was great.”
LUKE 6:48,49

Because Jesus promised that our lives will experience storms, it is

vital that we build strong foundations. If our foundations are weak,
our spiritual lives will be destroyed. If our foundations are strong,
we will survive the storms.

The first goal of Victory Weekend is to ensure that our spiritual

foundations are strong and biblical.

Freedom page 1
2. Experience Spiritual (2)

Freedom is not the right to do whatever we want, but the power

EXPLANATION
to do what is right. Many want to do right, but seem to be in
bondage to what is wrong. The Bible promises spiritual freedom.
For no one can lay a foundation other than that
which is laid, which is Jesus Christ.
1 CORINTHIANS 3:11

It is important to know that as believers, there is only one

foundation that our lives should be built upon, Jesus Christ—
His person, work, life, death, and resurrection. He should
be the only foundation of our faith. All other teachings and
doctrines are built on this truth. We can be confident to
live storm-proof lives because our foundation cannot be
destroyed or moved.

46
“Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and not do what
I tell you? 47Everyone who comes to me and hears
my words and does them, I will show you what he
is like . . .”
LUKE 6:46,47

God is building our lives. He has given us His Word so that

we can put it into practice. Today and tomorrow, we will be
hearing many things from the Bible but we should ask God
how we may apply them. The goal is not only to be hearers of
the Word, but to be doers of the Word.

TEACHING TIP

Ask this question for tension: Why do we need freedom?

EXPLANATION

The Bible teaches that anyone who sins is a slave to sin.

17
But thanks be to God, that you who were once
slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart
to the standard of teaching to which you were
committed, 18and, having been set free from sin,
have become slaves of righteousness.
ROMANS 6:17,18
ILLUSTRATION

A 7-year-old girl and her 5-year-old brother go to Grandma’s

house to play with slingshots. The girl hits the can; the boy
hits the chicken and kills it. The girl says she won’t tell anyone,
as long as he does whatever she says—wash the dishes,
sweep the floor, do the gardening. This goes on until the boy
confesses to the Grandma, then after he is forgiven, he can
now tell his sister to do her share of the work.

This illustration shows how sin can keep a person imprisoned

by their own actions. However, by telling the truth and
confessing sin, people can have freedom.

you free.”

EXPLANATION

Freedom is not something we have naturally—it is given to us.

We have been set free. Freedom is not something we earn—it
is a gift God has bestowed on us. Freedom begins when we
become aware of the truth about ourselves and admit our sin.
The key is humility and honesty.

Believe then that Jesus Himself sets us free—not the church,

this event, your pastor, or your Victory group leader. Jesus
is our deliverer and freedom fighter. We can trust that He is
more than willing and is more than able to be that.

“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has

2 TRANSFORMATION
How God Changes People

OBJECTIVE

• To help participants understand how God

changes people

• Chapter 2 should first answer: Why do we need to

change? Why does God still want to change us?

TRANSITION POINT

From the last chapter, we learned that we need strong biblical

foundations to withstand the tests and trials of life, and
freedom from the effects of sin, resulting in fruitfulness. God
wants us to have freedom so we can experience intimate
fellowship with Him. He desires for us to taste and see His
goodness. He wants us to know His plan and purpose for our
lives. But our sinful nature has made our senses dull. We are
not always aware of His presence, not always sensitive to His
leading, and often not mindful (or we are even clueless) about
God’s will for us. That’s why we need transformation!

TEACHING TIP

Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished work of

Christ on the cross.

ILLUSTRATION

When a mother tries to get her four-year-old child to take

a nap, the child continues to keep running until the mother
loses her temper and forces the child to sit still. However, the
child says, “You may see me sitting down, but on the inside, I’m
still running around!” This is not a picture of transformation.
The change was only on the outside. It is a good picture of
what transformation is not. Transformation is not about our
own good works or what we can do to change ourselves.
2 TRANSFORMATION
How God Changes People

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the

glory of the Lord, are being transformed into

Testament. Just as God met with and transformed them, He can
change each of us as well.

The Bible patterns for us a three-step process that God uses to bring
about this transformation.

Step 1: Truth (1)

Hearing, holding to, and knowing the truth brings freedom.

So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed

him, “If you abide in my word, you are truly
my disciples . . .”
JOHN 8:31

Truth we are ignorant of does not change us. We must first know the
truth, then be set free. More than just a concept or ideology, truth is a
person. Jesus is the Truth.

Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth,

and the life. No one comes to the Father except
through me.”
JOHN 14:6

The Holy Spirit convicts us and leads us to the truth.

“When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into

all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority,
but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare
to you the things that are to come.”
JOHN 16:13

As we hear, understand, and respond to God’s written Word, we will

experience freedom and lasting change.

“Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.”

EXPLANATION

Part of walking with God is reading His Word.

“This Book of the Law shall not depart from your

mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night,
so that you may be careful to do according to all
that is written in it. For then you will make your way
prosperous, and then you will have good success.”

Repentance is a change of mind that results in a change of direction.

Repentance is demonstrated by our deeds.

Faith enables us to live a victorious Christian life.

3 CROSS
What God Did for Me

OBJECTIVES

To help participants gain a deeper understanding of the

message of the Cross, and to lead them to respond in worship
and obedience

LOGISTICAL NEEDS FOR THIS SESSION

• A clean glass with clear water, iodine, and Vitamin C.

Preferably there is enough for a demonstration to a
large class.

• A large, visible cross that can stand on the stage/in front.

Balloons (already blown up), permanent markers, and
several large pins.

TEACHING TIPS

• Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished

work of Christ on the cross.

• This session on the Cross is the pivotal point of Victory

Weekend. It is important to have this session taught with
great clarity and effectiveness, as it will be the basis of all
other sessions after this.

• Almost an hour composed of teaching and ministry time

is highly recommended. Chapters 1 and 2 should climax
to this portion before having a short break.

INTRODUCTION

The central focus of Christianity is not about what we can do

for God but about what God has done for us. [Expound a bit.]
This can be summarized in the message of the cross.

The message of the Cross leads to life transformation.

ISAIAH 53:10

The cross in Jesus’ time was not an image of something noble

or holy. Its meaning was not in any way spiritual or worthy of
respect or honor. In fact, the cross was the most cruel and
humiliating form of punishment and was given only to the
most hated, vile, or ruthless criminals of their time. Many
people died on crosses. But one case that was set apart
from the rest was one Person who died on it, and changed
its meaning forever. He was not just anyone, He is the only
begotten Son of God. He was also without crime, without
sin, falsely accused, and yet sentenced to a vile criminal’s
death. Jesus Christ is God made man who died on a cross and
rose from the dead. This message is about an innocent who
died on the cross so that the guilty can live. He traded His
righteousness for our sins.

And Paul went in, as was his custom, and on
three Sabbath days he reasoned with them from
the Scriptures, 3explaining and proving that it was
necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the

ACTS 26:22,23

The cross was not the only form of execution in Ancient Rome, but
it was the most painful. It was designed to inflict a slow, painful,
humiliating death. It did not just kill its victims; it tortured them. The
pain of crucifixion began many hours before the victims were actually
nailed to the cross. The physical suffering Jesus endured included:

and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.
ISAIAH 53:5,6

• Jesus became a curse for us, so that we might receive

His blessing.

Blessings and curses are spiritual forces at work in the lives of

individuals, families, and communities as a result of obedience
or disobedience to God’s Word. They are usually released
through spoken words and are perpetuated from generation
to generation, until they are broken.

The evidence of a curse may include patterns of disease,

dysfunctions. On our own, we are unable to break these
curses in our lives. However, Jesus atoned for our sin on the
cross, thus breaking the power of these curses in our lives.
He took our poverty and gave us His rich blessings. In Christ,
we are not just free from a curse, but also recipients of the
blessing of God.

13
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by
becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is
everyone who is hanged on a tree”—14so that in Christ
Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the
Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit

EXPLANATION

We need to remember because it is so easy to forget. We

need to remember because we are a forgetful people. And
sometimes, the message is lost because of an over-familiarity
with the story of the Cross.

ILLUSTRATION

[Optional: Use water, iodine, and Vitamin C. Drop iodine into a

clear glass of clean water until it is cloudy and dark. Talk about
how there is nothing we can do to remove this sin in our lives.
However, when we understand what Christ did for us on the
cross, and receive Him as our Lord and Savior, He makes it as
if we have never sinned. Drop the Vitamin C into the cup until
the water is clear again.]

[Alternatively, use the balloon illustration, which talks about

the power of sin being broken.

MATERIALS: Balloons, cross, and tiny pin/needle

PREPARATION: Write several sin issues/curses on each inflated

balloon. Make sure that the writing is readable enough for the
participants to see. Put a tiny pin/needle in the center of the
HUGE cross.]

EXPLANATION: When Jesus Christ died on the cross for

the forgiveness of sins, He breaks the power of sin/curses/
struggles in our lives. [Now put the inflated balloon on the
center of the cross where you have placed the pin/needle. The
inflated balloon that has sin issues/curses written on it will
burst representing its power being broken in our lives.]

• To lead participants to be baptized in the Holy Spirit

TEACHING TIP

• Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished

work of Christ on the cross.

• Emphasize at the end of the session that the baptism

of the Holy Spirit is given not just to make us feel
good, but to enable and empower us to advance God’s
kingdom. This should lead us to become more missional,
not mystical.

ship, who enjoyed all the perks except the food. Instead, he
would go to his duffle bag and eat crackers every meal time.
One day, someone asked him why he kept doing that, if all of
the meals were free? The man had not known that they were
free, and so he missed out. Sometimes, all we do is go on the
cruise ship of receiving the gospel, but we miss the power we
could have had because we do not tap into the power of the

INTRODUCTION

Do you truly believe that Jesus rose from the dead? [Wait for
a solid response.] Can you imagine how much effort or power
God put into resurrecting Jesus from the dead? The Bible
describes it as God’s exerting of His mighty strength to raise
Christ from the dead. Ephesians 1:18-20 teaches that this
same power is at work within us.

18
. . . having the eyes of your hearts enlightened,
that you may know what is the hope to which
he has called you, what are the riches of his
glorious inheritance in the saints, 19and what is the
immeasurable greatness of his power toward us
who believe, according to the working of his great
might 20that he worked in Christ when he raised him
from the dead and seated him at his right hand in
the heavenly places . . .
EPHESIANS 1:18-20

This power is what we want to talk about. What is this power?

What is it for? How does it operate in our lives?

TEACHING TIPS

• Read Acts 1:4,5,8 (intro verse in their manual). Have them

encircle or highlight the words/phrases “power” and
“Holy Spirit.”

• Another suggestion is that instead of simply reading

this Scripture, a storytelling of the event can be done
together with the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2.

THE ROLE OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

Jesus asked His disciples to wait until they received the gift of the Holy

apart from the power and presence of the Holy Spirit. Following are
some of the ways the Holy Spirit helps the believers.

This next segment (The Role of the Holy Spirit) should

THE BAPTISM OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The promise of the infilling of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 was not just for
the original disciples, but for all who believe.

38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized
every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the

your children and for all who are far off, everyone
whom the Lord our God calls to himself.”
ACTS 2:38,39

John the Baptist pointed to Jesus as the one who will baptize us with
the Holy Spirit.

“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is

coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am
not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy
Spirit and fire.”
MATTHEW 3:11

God will give the Holy Spirit to those who ask in faith.

“If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more will the heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
LUKE 11:13

page 21

POWER 21
EXPLANATION

As children of God, we can ask Him for gifts.

10
“For everyone who asks receives, and the one who
seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be
opened. 11What father among you, if his son asks for
a fish, will instead of a fish give him a serpent; 12or
if he asks for an egg, will give him a scorpion? 13If
you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts
to your children, how much more will the heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”
LUKE 11:10-13

To be baptized is to be immersed. In the case of baptism in

the Holy Spirit, it is to be filled. While water baptism is about
publicly declaring that you are a follower of Christ, baptism
in the Holy Spirit is about asking God to fill you with His
presence and power.

TEACHING TIP

The asking and receiving by faith needs to be

greatly emphasized.

1. Usually, having the participants stand is helpful to

create a posture of anticipation. To be able to lay

leaders to pass between them. This is also helpful as
some may fall to the ground and be slain in the Spirit.
It is wise to have a few leaders behind them to prevent
physical injuries.

2. Using a worship song designed for an infilling helps

new believers pray and verbalize their asking.
Luke 11:13 says we should ask God. Therefore, the
speaker should facilitate the asking of each participant
by whatever means, regardless of language or volume
or by singing. Luke 6:45 says that out of the overflow
of the heart the mouth speaks. It is important to
emphasize speaking their prayers to God directly in
their most convenient manner (and language) and not
keeping silent during the time of asking and receiving.

3. Continue in an atmosphere of prayer and worship as

the evidence of the Holy Spirit becomes apparent.
Encourage the participants to pray in the Spirit.
Praying while crying/weeping and shouting may
happen, but encourage everyone to continue focusing
on God and not on the manifestations. Some may
experience healing and even physical sensations but,
as a facilitator, the goal is to keep the group focused
on God. Certain manifestations may be too much
of a distraction and it would be good for them to
be isolated in a corner, while still being ministered
to. (For God is not a God of confusion but of peace.
1 Corinthians 14:33)

4. After baptism, acknowledge the Holy Spirit’s work and

give Him praise. Since speaking in tongues is one of the
most common manifestations, tell the group that not
moving in it does not mean that they have not been
baptized as it is only one of the many gifts of the Spirit.
As for those who were enabled to speak in tongues,
caution them to speak in tongues only in appropriate
settings—not in the presence of unbelievers or public
corners but in private prayer, corporate worship, and
prayer gatherings.

SUGGESTION

Following the sessions on The Cross and The Holy Spirit,

usually there is time for one more morning session if the
event started in the morning. If the program used involves
separating men and women into split sessions, you may split
at this point. This may be better taught in separate groups for
men and women, to be able to emphasize sexual identity at
the onset.

TEACHING TIP

Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished work of

Christ on the cross.

It would be good to emphasize the reason behind

separating men and women for the next few sessions by
recognizing that men and women have different designs
and therefore have different needs. The following verse is a
suggested introduction.

So God created man in his own image, in the

image of God he created him; male and female
he created them.
GENESIS 1:27
INTRODUCTION

Identity is very important. Very commonly, we are defined

by what people think or say about us, by what the world
says about us, by what we do (work, passions, hobbies, or
interests), or by what we have done (history, past successes,
or failures). But as a follower of Christ, our identity is simply
what God thinks about us. And when we talk about our
identity in Christ, we need to go back to our original design.
We need to know what the Bible says regarding who we are.

First of all, God is our maker—He created us. Therefore, no

one knows us better.

13
For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me
together in my mother’s womb. 14I praise you, for I
am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are
your works; my soul knows it very well.
PSALM 139:13,14

[Suggest that they read Psalm 139 on their own and meditate
on it.]

God knows what He made us for. He fashioned us for a

purpose that only He knows fully. Second, He determined
us to be designed either as male or female—nothing more,
nothing less. Last, we were made in His image and likeness.
Most importantly, we are created to be Christlike.

You are here because you are a man (or ‘woman’ for the
women’s group). [This part should be a brief affirmation of

5 IDENTITY
their identity as men and women. Impartation regarding
their sexual identity will set the tone for ministry in the
succeeding sessions.]
What God Thinks About Me

But you are a chosen race, a royal

priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his
own possession . . .
1 PETER 2:9

Who we are determines how we act. Internal identity dictates external

lifestyle. Fish swim because they are fish. Birds fly because they are
birds. Sinners live in sin because they are sinners. A fish is not a
fish because it swims. Rather it swims because it is a fish. Nature
determines action.
page 25
Understanding this principle, Peter reminds the people who they are,

fish because it swims. Rather it swims because it is a fish. Nature

Understanding this principle, Peter reminds the people who they are,

We are not left out, not left over, not unwanted. Rather, we are
chosen. The following verses tell us why God chose us.

2. We are Royal .
(2)

A person is either born into a royal family or not. If not, then

no amount of intelligence, education, good looks, or money will
make one royal. Peter calls us a royal priesthood. As Christians, we
are born into a privileged bloodline. Because we are royalty, we
should hold our heads high and walk in confidence.

Not only are we born-again into a royal bloodline, we are a

royal priesthood. For the Jews in ancient Israel, to be a priest
was a spiritual privilege for a few. The priest had special access
to God. The priest had a place of honor in society. In Christ,
we have special access to God and a place of honor as His
royal priesthood.

We are royalty. We are a priesthood. We should act like it by living

What sin 21

Then Peter came up and said to him, “Lord,
how often will my brother sin against me, and

At the height of His pain and suffering on the cross, Jesus even

WHAT IS SPIRITUAL ERROR?

As believers, we are called to walk in the truth of God’s Word.
Anytime we elevate human reasoning above God’s Word, we end up
in spiritual error. There are different types of false teachings that lead
to spiritual error.

1. False Gospel (1)

There are many sincere and well-meaning people who are

teaching a false gospel. Some have added to the message,
resulting in legalism, or have deleted essential parts of the gospel,
such as the Lordship of Christ or repentance. Paul addressed the
problem of the false gospel to the Galatian church.

6
I am astonished that you are so quickly deserting him
who called you in the grace of Christ and are turning
to a different gospel—7not that there is another one,
but there are some who trouble you and want to
distort the gospel of Christ. 8But even if we or an angel
from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary
to the one we preached to you, let him be accursed.
9
As we have said before, so now I say again: If anyone
is preaching to you a gospel contrary to the one you
received, let him be accursed.
GALATIANS 1:6-9

page 37

There have been many unbiblical teachings about Jesus

throughout history. Some have so focused on His divinity that they
have rejected His humanity. Others have gone to the extreme
opposite, teaching that Jesus was just a good teacher. To avoid
spiritual error, we must base our teaching about the life, person,
and work of Christ on God’s written Word.

3
But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve
by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from
a sincere and pure devotion to Christ. 4For if someone
comes and proclaims another Jesus than the one
we proclaimed, or if you receive a different spirit
from the one you received, or if you accept a different
gospel from the one you accepted, you put up with it

What are sexual sins? Why do people engage in sexual sins?
The truth is people may engage in the same sexual sin but for
very different reasons. What are the wrong beliefs that lead to
sexual sins?

When people do not believe God created sex, then

immediately there is no moral standard for sex. There is no
right from wrong—anything goes. When people do not accept
God as the author of sex, they will look to fulfill their sexual
desires in their own way. When people do not accept God’s
design of male and female only, His image in man is perverted.

the Word of God at face value, and that we hope we would

person sins against his own body. 19Or do you not
know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit
within you, whom you have from God? You are not

EXPLANATION

We avoid immoral situations because God is holy and will

not be found in a place of sin and filth. We have a choice—
whether to remain in fellowship with God or not.

We avoid compromising situations because though they are

not sinful (yet), they can lead to sin. Sex does not start with
undressing but with words, emotions, touching, etc.

Avoid immoral movies, magazines, and content on

the Internet.

3
For the time that is past suffices for doing what the
Gentiles want to do, living in sensuality, passions,

idolatry. 4With respect to this they are surprised
when you do not join them in the same flood of
debauchery, and they malign you; 5but they will
give account to him who is ready to judge the
living and the dead.
1 PETER 4:3-5

[You may mention masturbation, fantasizing, rape,

and molestation.]

Flee from compromising relationships and situations that can

lead to sin, like Joseph.

7
And after a time his master’s wife cast her eyes on
Joseph and said, “Lie with me.” 8But he refused and
said to his master’s wife, “Behold, because of me
my master has no concern about anything in the
house, and he has put everything that he has in my
charge. 9He is not greater in this house than I am,
nor has he kept back anything from me except you,
because you are his wife. How then can I do this
great wickedness and sin against God?” 10And as she
spoke to Joseph day after day, he would not listen
to her, to lie beside her or to be with her. 11But one
day, when he went into the house to do his work
and none of the men of the house was there in the
house, 12she caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie
with me.” But he left his garment in her hand and
fled and got out of the house.

are the lies that we tend to believe regarding our sexuality

• ‘I will lose this person if I don’t give in to his/her sexual

• ‘My spouse can’t give me what I need. Therefore, I will
find it from someone else.’

purity 67
• ‘I have been touched before, so it’s okay to give in again.’
• ‘God will understand my urges. He made me like this.’
• ‘I can best show my loved one that s/he’s special by
giving in to pre-marital sex.’
• ‘I feel loved and accepted when I undress and do it.’

In the end, we need to ask ourselves: Do I really believe that

God can give me the best sex life (purest, most pleasurable)?
Do I really want that? Is it worth the wait? Do I believe that
despite my previous sins, God can really redeem me, cleanse
me, and make me new?

We can choose our idols (ourselves, things, or other people

to fulfill our sexual needs), or we can look to God for those
needs to be met.

MINISTRY MOMENT

During ministry time, encourage participants to pray prayers

of repentance over sexual sins committed, if any. Minister
healing and deliverance where needed.

Specific areas for repentance:

• Pornography–fantasizing, masturbation, voyeurism

• Fornication–unmarried engaging in sexual activities

• Adultery–married person having sex with someone other

than his/her spouse

• Perversion–incest, bestiality, sexual abuse, homosexuality

Ask God for His grace to transform, cleanse, and purify

them for His purpose.

Specific areas for healing and deliverance:

• Victims of molestation and sexual abuse

• Victims of rape

Ask God for His love and comfort to surround them,

and for His grace to heal every wound caused by
these experiences.

Refrain from asking participants to raise their hands as this is

a sensitive moment.

EXPLANATION

We cannot simply get over our addictions without

acknowledging that we need God every day. Humble yourself
before Him and ask for His grace and strength to withstand
temptation. This also includes getting help, admitting you
have a problem, recognizing that you can’t do this alone, and
praying with those who can stand with you. It can also involve
asking for professional help, where needed. We may not just
need spiritual help; we may also need psychological help.

TEACHING TIP

The teacher may want a time of reflection as to why the

participants should give up their addictions. And hopefully the
answers will be deeper than because they are bad or harmful,
prohibited, or embarrassing, or because the pastor says so.
Rather, it should be because they belong to God now through
Christ’s work on the cross and therefore, only God can truly
give them the desires of their hearts. It should be a decision
based on the truth that we can find joy only in His presence
and that only He can give eternal pleasures.

freedom 75
You make known to me the path of life; in your
presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand
are pleasures forevermore.
PSALM 16:11

MINISTRY MOMENT

During ministry time, encourage the participants to repent of

the idols that they have turned to for their personal needs.
Pray for deliverance from addictions, if you are led by the
Spirit to do so. Pray also for new passions and appetites. Tell
them to confess something like ‘God is more than enough for
all that we truly need and desire in life.’

Build a prophetic ministry moment for faith to be set free

from these addictions.

APPLICATION

Before the one-on-one ministry time, end the sessions for

the day by speaking a blessing over the participants from
Deuteronomy 28 (back part of the “Who am I?” declaration).

Personal Application

TRANSITION POINT

When starting another segment of teaching, teachers may

want to consider having a brief time of praise and worship
again and transitioning to an acknowledgment of God’s
presence and deep work in them from the previous day.

TEACHING TIP

Christ on the cross.

BACKGROUND

Much of the material in this chapter is taken from the chapter

on Faith in the twelve-lesson ONE 2 ONE.

11 BAPTISM
Our Declaration

OBJECTIVES

• To help participants gain a deeper understanding of

water baptism

• To encourage those who have not been baptized to

publicly proclaim their faith in Jesus Christ through
water baptism

TEACHING TIP

Emphasize the centrality of the Cross and the finished work of

Christ on the cross.

BACKGROUND

The chapter on baptism in ONE 2 ONE mentions one

illustration from the Bible about baptism: burial and
resurrection. This lesson will cover that and three other
illustrations (originally in the twelve-chapter ONE 2 ONE.)

You may also refer to the chapter on baptism in Preparing for

Victory Weekend.

As an introduction, you may use the story of the thief who was
crucified beside Jesus to point out that water baptism doesn’t
save us, or to answer the question about whether a Christian

11
who died without being water baptized is saved or not.
BAPTISM
INTRODUCTION
Our Declaration

38
And Peter said to them, “Repent and be
baptized every one of you in the name of
Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins,
and you will receive the gift of the
Holy Spirit. . . . ” 41So those who received his
word were baptized, and there were added
that day about three thousand souls.
ACTS 2:38,41
page 55
Water baptism is an external physical act that represents an internal
spiritual reality. The Apostle Peter emphasized that water baptism
that day about three thousand souls.
ACTS 2:38,41

Water baptism is an external physical act that represents an internal

spiritual reality. The Apostle Peter emphasized that water baptism
is not a means for salvation, but an act of faith and obedience after
receiving the gospel of salvation. When you get baptized in water, you
publicly proclaim your faith in Jesus Christ.

The Bible presents four illustrations to help us understand

water baptism.

1. Burial (1)
and Resurrection
Paul compares Christian baptism to a burial. In order to be buried,
a person must first die. In the same way, the prerequisite for
baptism is death to sin. After we are buried in baptism, then we
are raised to live a new life.

1
What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin that
grace may abound? 2By no means! How can we who
died to sin still live in it? 3Do you not know that all of us
who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized
into his death? 4We were buried therefore with him by
baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was

page 55

raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too

might walk in newness of life.
ROMANS 6:1-4

2. Crossing (2)
the Red Sea
In the same way the Israelites were in slavery to the Egyptians, we
were all slaves of sin. The Israelites were freed from their bondage
by passing through the Red Sea. Baptism pictures the freedom
from sin that Jesus purchased for us on the cross.

1
For I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that
our fathers were all under the cloud, and all passed
through the sea, 2and all were baptized into Moses in
the cloud and in the sea . . .
1 CORINTHIANS 10:1,2

3. Circumcision (3)

Paul says baptism is like a circumcision, not done by human

hands, but a spiritual circumcision done by Christ. It is a putting off
of the sinful nature by faith in the work of Christ.

11
In him also you were circumcised with a circumcisionpage 56
made without hands, by putting off the body of the
flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12having been
84 VICTORY weekend buried with him in baptism, in which you were also
raised with him through faith in the powerful working
of God, who raised him from the dead.

COLOSSIANS 2:11,12

4. The Flood (4)

Peter teaches that it is not the water or the removal of dirt that saves
us, but the death and resurrection of Christ.

. . . because they formerly did not obey, when God’s

20

patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was

being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons,
were brought safely through water. 21Baptism, which

56 VICTORY WEEKEND page 56

corresponds to this, now saves you, not as a removal of

dirt from the body but as an appeal to God for a good
conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ . . .
1 PETER 3:20,21

WHAT NOW?
Have you been baptized in water since you repented of your sins?
If not, what are you waiting for?

“‘And now why do you wait? Rise and be baptized and

wash away your sins, calling on his name.’”

Three reasons we discourage re-baptism:

1. Theological sacrament

Baptism in our church community is not more acceptable

than baptism in another community. We also want to
respect the church they came from, which also the Body
of Christ. When you get baptized, it is not baptism into the
local church, but into the universal Church.

2. Cultic thinking

Some groups think that baptism is necessary for salvation.

Some transferees think that “This is the baptism that
counts.” However, baptism does not work that way. Since
the baptism is into the universal Church, the first baptism
does not lose its validity.

3. Leadership issues

BACKGROUND

This chapter is to whet the appetite of the participants to go

and make disciples. The principles behind our discipleship
journey will be explained in the Making Disciples class, which
they are encouraged to attend.

However, to continue establishing a deep, life-long, biblical

foundation, we encourage participants to do The Purple Book
and attend the foundations class, The Purple Book Study Guide,
as well as know more about church life by joining the Church
Community class.

MINISTRY TIME

Ask the facilitators and Victory group leaders to stand up

to be recognized. Thank them, pray for them, and ask the
participants to give them a word of thanks. After this, address
the participants, challenging them to do for others what had
been done for them by their facilitators and Victory group
leaders. Remind them that they are filled with the Holy Spirit
and that they can hear the Holy Spirit talk to them. Ask them
to close their eyes and to be sensitive to the Holy Spirit, asking
Him to show a face or give a name of a person He wants them

to reach out to and step out in faith to engage. After a brief
pause, say a prayer of acceptance and commissioning. Do this
in order to empower them to actually take the next step of
going out and engaging those people they have been moved
to engage.
