16 A famous relation in physics relates moving mass m to the rest mass m𝑜 of a particle in terms of its [2]
speed v and the speed of light, c. (This relation first arose as a consequence of special relativity due to
Albert Einstein). A boy recalls the relation almost correctly but forgets where to put the constant c. He

18 Galileo’s law of odd numbers: The distances traversed, during equal intervals of time, by a body falling [2]

Section C
(Short Answers Type 2 - Questions)
19 Explain this statement clearly: [3]
To call a dimensional quantity large or small is meaningless without specifying a standard for
comparison. In view of this, reframe the following statements wherever necessary:
1. atoms are very small objects.
2. a jet plane moves with great speed.
3. the mass of Jupiter is very large.
4. the air inside this room contains a large number of molecules.
5. a proton is much more massive than an electron.
6. the speed of sound is much smaller than the speed of light.
20 A woman starts from her home at 9.00 am, walks with a speed of 5 km h−1 on a straight road up to her [3]
office 2.5 km away, stays at the office up to 5.00 pm, and returns home by an auto with a speed of 25
km h −1 . Choose suitable scales and plot the x - t graph of her motion.
21 Figure gives the x - t plot of a particle executing one - dimensional simple harmonic motion. Give the [3]
signs of position, velocity and acceleration variables of the particle at t = 0.3 s, 1.2 s, - 1.2 s.

Section D
(Case study)
22 Ravi is a student who cycles to school every day. One day, he decided to note the time and distance [4]
covered during his journey. He was curious to understand how his speed varied throughout the trip.
So, he carefully recorded each phase of his motion.
The data he collected is as follows:
• For the first 5 minutes, he cycled at a speed of 6 m/s.
• Then, he accelerated uniformly and increased his speed to 12 m/s in the next 10 seconds. This
change in speed helped him cover more distance in less time.
• He continued at this speed for the next 10 minutes. During this time, he maintained a steady
rhythm and enjoyed the ride.
• Finally, he slowed down uniformly and came to rest in 20 seconds as he reached the school
gate.
Using the above information, answer the following questions:
Q1. What is the acceleration during the time Ravi increased his speed from 6 m/s to 12 m/s?
Q2. How much distance did Ravi cover while accelerating?
Q3. What is the acceleration (deceleration) while he comes to rest in the last 20 seconds?
Q4. Calculate the distance he covered during the last 20 seconds of his journey.
Q5. What is the total time taken by Ravi from start to reaching the school gate? (Give in seconds)
23 A group of students visited a national laboratory as part of a science educational trip. They observed [4]
that scientists there used SI units while conducting experiments, measuring quantities such as time,
length, temperature, and electric current. The guide explained that the International System of Units
(SI) ensures uniformity in measurements across the world. The students saw a digital thermometer
showing temperature in kelvin, a stopwatch measuring time in seconds, and a laser device that
measured distance in meters. The guide also told them that the SI system consists of seven base units
and is accepted globally in scientific work. Derived units like newton for force, joule for energy, and
watt for power are all based on these seven base units.
Questions:
Q1. Why is the use of SI units preferred in scientific measurements across the world?
Q2. Identify the SI base unit for temperature and explain why it is preferred over Celsius in scientific
work.
Q3. A scientist measures a force of 20 N. Express 1 newton in terms of SI base units.
Q4. Match the following physical quantities with their corresponding SI units:
Physical Quantity SI Unit
(a) Luminous intensity (i) mole
(b) Electric current (ii) ampere
(c) Amount of substance (iii) candela
Q5. If the speed of light is approximately 3 × 10⁸ m/s, what are the SI units of this measurement?
Section E
(Long Answer Type questions)
24 The position - time (x - t) graphs for two children A and B returning from their school O to their homes [5]
P and Q respectively are shown in Fig. Choose the correct entries in the brackets below;

1. (A / B) lives closer to the school than(A / B)

2. (A / B) starts from the school earlier than ( A / B)
3. (A / B) walks faster than ( A / B)
4. A and B reach home at the (same/different) time
5. (A / B) overtakes ( A / B) on the road (once/twice).

25 Figure gives a speed - time graph of a particle in motion along a constant direction. Three equal [5]
intervals of time are shown. In which interval is the average acceleration greatest in magnitude? In
which interval is the average speed greatest? Choosing the positive direction as the constant direction
of motion, give the signs of v and𝑎 in the three intervals. What are the accelerations at the points A, B,
C and D?
