Seas and Oceans: The Blue Frontier
Seas and oceans cover over 70% of Earth’s surface and are essential to life on the planet. They
regulate global climate by absorbing solar radiation and distributing heat via ocean currents.
Oceans are also the largest carbon sinks and produce over half of the world's oxygen through
marine photosynthesis. Marine ecosystems range from shallow coral reefs to deep ocean trenches,
housing millions of species, many yet to be discovered. The oceans support fisheries, tourism,
shipping routes, and natural resources such as oil and gas. Threats to oceans include overfishing,
plastic pollution, acidification, and rising sea temperatures. Marine conservation involves
establishing marine protected areas, enforcing sustainable fishing practices, and reducing
greenhouse gas emissions to protect ocean health for future generations.
