History of the castle

Edinburgh Castle is a very old and important castle in

Scotland. It sits on a high rock called Castle Rock in the
city of Edinburgh. Its history is more than 1,000 years
old!
A home for Kings and Queens
People have lived on Castle Rock for a very long time, even
before there were castles. The first real castle was built
by King Malcolm III around the 11th century.
Later, his son, King David I, built St. Margaret's Chapel
around 1130, which is the oldest building you can still
see there today.
Many Scottish kings and queens lived in the castle. Mary
Queen of Scots even had her son, James VI (who later became
King James I of England), there in 1566. The castle was a
royal home until 1633.
Many fights and sieges
Edinburgh Castle has been
attacked many times – more
than any other castle in Europe!
It often changed hands between
the Scottish and the English,
especially during the Wars of
Scottish Independence.

In 1314, a brave Scottish soldier named Thomas Randolph

took the castle back from the English in a surprise night
attack.
There was a very long and difficult attack called the "Lang
Siege" from 1571 to 1573, which damaged the castle a lot.
The castle was also important during the Jacobite Risings
in the 1700s.
A Military Place and Now a Tourist Spot

From the late 1500s, the castle became more of a military base.
Soldiers lived there, and it was used to store weapons and as a prison
for soldiers during wars, even World War I. The army still uses it
today.
Today, Edinburgh Castle is a very important symbol for Scotland. It's
the most popular place for tourists to visit in Scotland! You can see
amazing views of the city from there, and it holds important things
like the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels) and the
Stone of Scone.
