Suddenly, a sizzling sound spattered from the kitchen, making everyone sit up and listen. The oven

**Passage: Understanding Parts of Speech**
Languages are made up of many different parts that help us form sentences and share our ideas clearly.
These parts are called parts of speech. There are eight main parts of speech: nouns, pronouns, verbs,
adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections.
Nouns are words that name people, places, things, or ideas. For example, **dog**, **school**, and
**happiness** are nouns. Pronouns take the place of nouns; instead of saying "Sarah is happy," we can
say **she is happy**. Verbs show action or being. For example, **run**, **is**, and **study** are verbs.
Adjectives describe nouns. They tell us more about the noun, like **blue**, **happy**, or **tall**. Adverbs
often describe verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs. They tell how, when, where, or to what extent, such as
**quickly**, **yesterday**, or **very**.
4
Prepositions show the relationship between a noun or pronoun and other words in a sentence. Examples
include **in**, **on**, and **under**. Conjunctions connect words or groups of words, like **and**, **but**,
or **because**. Interjections are words that show emotions, such as **Wow!**, **Ouch!**, or **Hey!**.
Understanding these parts of speech helps us write and speak clearly. Practice identifying them in
sentences to become better writers!
