CHAPTER ONE
ABOUT SIWES PROGRAM
1.1 INTRODUCTION TO SIWES
Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) was
designed with the responsibility of promoting and encouraging
the acquisition of skills in industry and commerce with the view
of generating a pool of trained indigenous man power sufficient
to meet the needs of the economy. The most important asset of
any industrial organization depends on the technical
competence of its manpower for the operation and
maintenance of its non-human assets and resources, hence,
the need for SIWES.
SIWES was established by ITF in 1973 to solve the problem of
lack of adequate practical skills preparatory for employment in
industries by Nigerian graduates of tertiary institutions. The
Scheme exposes students to industry based skills necessary for
a smooth transition from the classroom to the world of work. It
affords students of tertiary institutions the opportunity of being
familiarized and exposed to the needed experience in handling
machinery and equipment which are usually not available in
the educational institutions.
1.2 SCOPE OF SIWES
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) is a
compulsory industrial training program initiated by the
Industrial Training Fund (ITF) for students of tertiary institutions
in Nigeria. It is designed to bridge the gap between theoretical
classroom knowledge and practical real-world applications. This
report documents the experience and knowledge I gained
during my six-month SIWES program at the ICT Unit and Cyber
Café Training Center.
1.3 OBJECTIVES OF SIWES
To expose students to real work environments.
To gain hands-on experience in computer systems and
networks.
To develop problem-solving and communication skills.
3
To understand the structure and operation of ICT
organizations.
To apply classroom knowledge in practical situations.
To prepare for employment after graduation.

3.4 TASK PERFORMED
I was taught on the identification various component of
computer hardware, e.g. hard disk, floppy diskette, random
access memory (RAM), removing and replacing of these
hardware components, installation of various software, how to
6
connect various devices (printers and scanners) and other
computer peripherals.
I was taught on how to format a system
How to Format a Computer?
Back Up Your Hard Drive.
Choose Your Preferred Installation Method.
Insert the Disk into the CD Drive.
Wait for the Disk to Load.
Let the Computer Complete the Installation.
Restart the Computer.
Install a Fresh System.
Completing the Reformat Process.

You can follow the steps below to install an application from
an .exe file.
Locate and download an .exe file.
Locate and double-click the .exe file. (It will usually be in your
Downloads folder.) A dialog box will appear. Follow the
instructions to install the software. The software will be
installed.
3.4.2 Been Introduce On How To Operate A Laptop
How to operate a laptop?
You will often interact with the computer by moving the mouse
pointer over something on the computer screen, then clicking
one of the buttons. On laptops, you can use the trackpad,
located below the keyboard, instead of a mouse. Simply drag
your finger across the trackpad to move the pointer on the
screen.
3.4.3 Introduction To Function Key
Function keys
A function key is a key on a computer or terminal keyboard that
can be programmed to cause the operating system or an
application program to perform certain actions, a form of soft
key. On some keyboards/computers, function keys may have
default actions, accessible on power-on.
The F1 to F12 keys on a computer keyboard are function keys
that can perform various tasks depending on the operating
8
system, software, or application being used. Here are some of
the common uses of each function key: 1. F1: This key is often
used as a help key in many applications.
I learn on different types of windows such as window seven,
windows eight, window eight point one, window ten and
windows eleven
Microsoft released the first version of Windows in the mid-
1980s. There have been many versions of Windows since then,
but the most recent ones include Windows 10 (released in
2015), Windows 8 (2012), Windows 7 (2009), Windows Vista
(2007), and Windows XP (2001).
3.4.4 How To Service A Motherboard?
Most motherboards can be repaired and it's cheaper than
replacing the entire motherboard or buying a new laptop. Each
malfunction laptop's motherboard has to be diagnosed carefully
by a competent technician with considerable experience and it
should be done only in a professional
laboratory.
In this article, we will discuss some of the most effective
motherboard repair techniques that you can use to diagnose
and fix common problems.
1 Identify the problem.
2 Clean the motherboard.
3 Reseat the components.
4 Reflow the solder.
5 Replace the components.
6 Seek professional help.
3.4.5 Introduction to Corel draw
CorelDraw is a family of software programs used for editing
vector graphics, illustration and design. Vector graphics are
9
created in graphics packages and consist of objects. Each
object can be edited separately, meaning that the shape,
colour, size and position can be changed without
losing quality. to create, fashion, execute, or construct
according to plan: devise, contrive. design a system for
tracking inventory, to conceive and plan out in the mind.
3.4.6 Introduction to Microsoft PowerPoint
MS Office PowerPoint is an application for making graphical
presentations thus adding a visual aspect to our data,
enhancing its concept, and leading to easier communication.
The software offers various features like Customizing colour
schemes, adding graphics, images, and animation, etc.
Selecting slide
Slide transitions are the animation-like effects that happen
when you move from one slide to the next during a
presentation. Add slide transitions to bring your PowerPoint
presentation to life.
Select the desired slide from the Slide Navigation pane. This is
the slide that will appear after the transition. Click the
Transitions tab, then locate the Transition to This Slide group.
By default,
None is applied to each slide

CHAPTER FOUR
RECOMMENDATION AND CONCLUSION
4.1 Recommendation
The recommendations arising from the foregoing appraisal of
the effectiveness of SIWES in the formation of competent and
productive technical manpower for the economy are
summarized as follows;
i. SIWES placements should be carefully matched to
students’ fields.
ii. ICT centers should provide more advanced training on
trending technologies.
iii. Institutions should monitor students’ progress through
regular evaluations.
4.2 Conclusion
The Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES) plays
a significant role in human resource development. As a result of
the programme, I am now more confident to build my future
with KUBAU Local gov’t ICT Center Anchau because it has been
one of the most interesting, productive and instructive
experience in my life. Through this training, I have gained new
insight and more comprehensive understanding about the real
industrial working condition and practice. All these valuable
experience and knowledge that I have gained were not only
acquired through the direct involvement in task but also
through other aspect of training such as work observation,
12
interaction with colleges, superior and other people related to
the field.
