Abstract

The document discusses a project aimed at enhancing railway safety by introducing mechanical platform edge extensions, or safety grills, to bridge the gap between the train and platform, thereby preventing accidents. It outlines the use of sensors to monitor train proximity, activating safety measures for passengers during boarding and alighting. Additionally, the project proposes a luggage transport system to reduce manual effort, making the overall railway experience safer and more efficient.

SAFETY GRILLS TO AVOID RAILWAY

PLATFORM ACCIDENT AND EASY

LUGGAGE TRANSPORT SYSTEM
ABSTRACT
The different modes of transport are air, water, and land transport,
which include rail transport, road transport and off-road transport. Most
commonly using transport system are Roadways, Railways and Airways. In
these frequently we use the railways, because it is cheaper and it is more
convenient than other transport systems. The third largest railway network in
the world is Indian railway network. But the accident’s occurs in the railways is
higher. Mostly the accidents in the railway station occur between the railway
platform and to the train, because of the platform gap. The platform gap is the
gap exists between the train and to the platform. To avoid these accidents that
the Indian government come with an indicative to increase the height of the
platform. But it is not easy job to increase the height. At the time of working we
cannot access the platforms.

By applying this project it is easy to avoid the accidents as well as we

can use the platform too. A human fall down in the gap exist between the
platform and to the train can be totally avoided by introducing Mechanical
platform edge extensions known as platform gap fillers is used to bridge the
gap between platform and to the train. This is more useful in the case of
safeguard the human life and also it is cheaper than the cost which is involved
for increase the height of the platform. In which the safety grill setup present in
the bottom of the locomotive compartment it will extracted automatically while
reaching the platform with the help of sensor, so the platform gap is closed
with the safety grill. And then it will retract again into the bottom of the
locomotive compartment after leaving the station. By this project the platform
gap accidents are avoided.
The primary objective of this research is to proactively prevent train
accidents, mitigating the potential for costly injuries and fatalities. Particularly
relevant for railway departments, this project addresses the pressing issue of
train accidents, which are more prevalent in countries like India. The system
relies on Sensors to continually monitor the distance of approaching trains.
When a train nears the platform, a magnetic sensor (switch) recognizes it,
triggering the activation of a green led as a signal to passengers.
Simultaneously, the grills open through a servo motor, ensuring safe boarding.
Conversely, when the train departs and moves away from the platform, the
magnetic sensor at the other end of the platform detects this change,
activating a buzzer to signal passengers. Additionally, the grills are
automatically closed using the servo motor, enhancing safety measures. This
integrated approach not only improves train safety but also enhances the
overall efficiency of railway operations, contributing to a safer and more
secure transportation environment.

The demo module is constructed using a railway track with a train trolley
running over it. This trolley is designed using ATMEL 89C2051 controller that
automatically stops in the station and will start again when the start button
over it is pressed. The safety grill mechanism will be activated once the train
comes to the platform and will be deactivated once the train leaves. In
addition, the luggage of the passengers can be carried from one platform to
the other through a chain driven crane like mechanism by lifting the luggage
up and transporting to the required platform and dropping.

ADVANTAGES
 Enhances the passenger’s safety.
 Reduces the human effort to carry the luggage.
 Cost effective
 Minimum manual operation needed.
 Accidents on the platforms will be reduced.
INTRODUCTION
Indian Railways is a state-owned railway company, responsible for
rail transport in India. It is owned and operated by the ‘Government of India’
through the ‘Ministry of Railways’. Indian Railways is a great national asset,
being a single transport network connects far flung areas of the country since

April 16th, 1853. It is the fourth largest railway network in the world which
runs 19,000 trains, out of which 12,000 trains carry over 23 million passengers
per day connecting about 7216 stations spread across the country on both
long-distance and suburban routes. It runs more than 7,000 freight trains per
day carrying about 3 million tons of freight every day. It has a network of
66,687 kilometers which is more than one and half times the circumference of
the earth. And also it is the fourth-largest railway network in the world by size,
with 121,407 kilometers of total track over a 67,368-kilometre route. Forty nine
percent of the routes are electrified with 25 KV AC electric traction while thirty
three percent of them are double or multi-tracked. Safety of both passengers
and employees is a major concern for transit agencies.

Typical safety concerns for rail transit vary greatly depending on mode,
location, climate, age of system, and various other factors. In general, the
public often interact with rail transit at two primary locations. The first is at
grade crossings, whether they be a pedestrian crossing or a roadway
crossing. The second is at rail station platforms, which can vary from low level
to high level. Passenger safety at rail stations can be a significant concern for
rail transit operators. Stations can be in varying configurations such as
underground, at grade, and elevated. Stations along a single route can include
multiple configurations and see varying levels of passenger flows. The specific
safety concerns associated with each type of station can differ significantly.
Furthermore, there can be additional differing safety concerns in relation to
island platforms versus side platforms and tangent versus curved track.

The rail transport mode is formed simpler and efficient by the very fact
that it connects the foremost populated areas at increasingly high speeds,
providing social bond at local level and establish an important think about land
use planning at the national, European and international levels. The rail sector
thus needs to ensure its security against accidents and suicides occurring on
its property so as to supply continued service and maximum reliability. An
important means to realize this goal is that the analysis of the initiatives
already taken in different countries to address these events. Responses can't
be easily transposed from one country to a different as they take into account
specific cultural and sociological phenomena; Furthermore, they depend upon
the sociopolitical organization of a rustic and therefore the resultant allocation
of responsibilities and competences. This project describes general
preventative measures targeted to scale back railway suicides and
trespassing accidents, and it describes them in terms of their capability to
effectively minimize accidents, their cost-effective ness and their in corporation
within the railway transport system as an entire.

A particular case is that the grade crossing, which is the interface

between two very different transport modes. Moreover, accidents at level
crossings are mostly linked to human errors committed by road users. It is
thus arduous to define the responsibilities’ borders in this case, and therefore
the approaches wont to ensure safety are somewhat different from those used
at other parts of the railway infrastructure. The project is organized as follows,
some relevant statistics on railway safety are presented and analyse so as to
spot the most trends, the measures wont to protect railway infrastructure and
avoid accidents are presented and discussed details the particular case of
level crossings and therefore the specific measures dedicated to them , we
conclude the study while exposing the most prospects of our add this field.
Here in this project work depending on the train presence, the magnetic
switches will provide input to the arduino controller on the platform. This
variation is read by the central processing unit designed using microcontroller
ATMEGA 328.
