Opening

Over the next 90 minutes, we’re going to take you on a journey through India’s maritime legacy — a
story that’s as much about strategy and sovereignty as it is about identity and vision. We’ll begin with
the powerful fleets of the Chola dynasty, who projected Indian influence across Southeast Asia —
centuries before European colonialism. Then we’ll move to the Maratha Navy under Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj, who recognized the seas as vital to India's defence. From there, we step into the era
of the Royal Indian Navy — its contributions during the World Wars and the bold Naval Mutiny of 1946
that played a quiet but significant role in India’s independence. And finally, we’ll explore the modern
Indian Navy — from the liberation of Goa, to the 1971 war, to its growing presence in the Indo-Pacific
today. We’ll also look ahead: how is the Navy preparing for the changing nature of warfare in the
coming decades? But before we jump into history, I would like to start with a fundamental question-

1. India shares land borders with seven countries — and most of our security conversations revolve
around the Army and continental threats. So let me start with a simple but powerful question: Why
does a country like India — with its deep-rooted land concerns — need a powerful Navy? What does
maritime power really mean for a nation like ours?

A. Dynastic Navy (Chola, etc.)

2. India’s tryst with sea power isn’t new. The Chola dynasty, for instance, had far-reaching naval
campaigns. Could you help us understand how ancient Indian kingdoms viewed naval power?

B. Maratha Navy (Shivaji’s Naval Vision)

3. Shivaji is celebrated as a land warrior, but few outside Maharashtra know he laid the foundation
for a native naval force. What prompted him to think so strategically about the sea. Can you throw
some light on the Maratha Navy?

4. What exactly the difference between these two navies, comparatively whose navy proved to be
more strong or successful? And if india already had a navy before Shivaji maharaj’s time, then why
maharaj called as the father of Indian navy?

5. Shivaji maharaj Rajmudra on Navy flag. (whose idea, why it took so much time from independence,
what was your role in it?)

B. Pre-Independence Navy (The Royal Indian Navy & the Mutiny)

6. Can you walk us through the period of Bombay Marime and its transformation to the Royal Indian
Navy?

7. In 1946, a largely forgotten uprising by Indian sailors shook British rule. Could you take us through
the Royal Indian Navy Mutiny and its significance? (Ask Cmde Dorai if he wants to play some videos
here)

D. Post-Independence Navy
8. Can you describe to the audience the kind of Navy we inherited post-independence? What
challenges did the Navy face? What kind of role was envisaged for the Navy post-independence and
through the 1950s?

9. Operation Vijay—the naval role in the liberation of Goa, Daman & Diu in 1961—is rarely discussed.
What was the Navy’s contribution?"

10. The 1971 war is a proud moment in India’s naval history. Could you walk us through the operations
like Trident and Python?" (Ask Cmde Dorai if he wants to play some videos here)

11. Can you provide us with a glimpse of the journey of aircraft carriers in the Indian Navy – what
exactly aircraft carrier means to understand the common citizen of society, its story from the Vikrant
of 1960s, vikramaditya to the Vikrant of 2022? Could you explain why the Indian Navy felt a need for
these carriers in the 1960s and how has the strategic reasoning evolved over the years. Has the debate
around submarines or carriers been settled within the Navy?

12. Submarine arm is another potent arm of the Indian Navy, can you enlighten the audience with
our defence capabilities and the progress with our submarine programme? How do we fare with
respect to our competitors?

13. In terms of capability in nowadays, please explain our strength… number of AC, submarine,
frigates, corvette, destroyers… basic difference in it to understand common people.

14. The 2008 Mumbai attacks brought forward a few shortcomings with regards to maritime security.
How has the Navy risen to such challenges? Area of coast guard and navy

15. We often talk about the Military role of Navy, can you provide us with an overview of other roles
of the Indian Navy, especially during peace time? What do the diplomatic, constabulary & benign roles
for the Indian Navy entail? (Ask Cmde Dorai if he wants to play some videos here)

16. India has a coastline longer than the distance from Kashmir to Kanyakumari — over 7,500 km —
and yet, we often think like a landlocked nation. Why do you think the sea, and our Navy, haven’t been
part of our national imagination the way they should be? Or have things changed? How does the Navy
balance modernization with resource constraints?"

17. Hierarchy in Indian Navy…

18. Your personal combat experience or any terrifying experience in the ocean (please share if any)

19. Role of Navy in Galwan issue

20. As per your perspective which incident or event highlighted the prowess of the indian navy at
international level?

21. Gazi movie…

22. Recent Pirates operations… also share any thrilling story or incident of an anti piracy operation
carried out by the indian navy

23. Your inspiration or role model

24. Operation sindoor, what navy was doing, why nave did not opened direct attack or retaliation like
army and airforce

25. Our readiness for future, like if war triggers with china or Pakistan
26. Political

F. Naval Maritime History Complex

27. You’re currently associated with the Naval Maritime History Complex. Could you share the vision
behind this national initiative? (Ask Cmde Dorai if he wants to play some videos here)

28. In closing, what message would you give young Indians—who aspire to join the Navy and in what
are the opportunities within the Indian Navy?
