RF Generator Low Power Diagnostic Checklist

1. Input Power & Supply

 AC main voltage measured and within spec(220-240V)

 Power cord and plug inspected(no burns,looseness)
 Internal power supply rails(DC) measured and stable
 No blown fuses/burnt components in power supply section

2. Visual & Thermal Inspection

 RF PCB checked for burn marks, cracked components

 Capacitors visually inspected for bulging/leaking
 Heat sinks/fans checked for operartion

 Thermal checks(IR Thermometer for overheating hotspots)

3. Output Load Matching

 Connected to known good 50ohm dummy load(greater than 2kW)

 Output measured via RF power meter
 VSWR/reflected power checked/acceptable range confirmed
 Output connectors and cables inspected for damage/looseness

4. Amplifier stage checks

 RF signal traced through amplifier stage using oscilloscope
 Gate/drain/source voltages on transistors within expected range
 No dead RF driver of final amplifier MOSFETs detected

5. Matching Network
 Matching network components(inductors,capacitors) measured
 No sign of burnt L/C parts

6. Protection & Interlocks

 Checked for active interlock(page 118-119 service manual)
 Fans operational/airflow normal
 Interlock switches or sensors checked for continuity/function

RF Generator Internal Fault

 Power Amplifier Failure: The power transistors or final stage amplifier modules may have
degraded or failed.
 Driver Stage Issue: If the driver circuit feeding the final amplifier is faulty, it may not be
delivering enough power.
 Power Supply Problem: The internal power supply might not be providing enough
voltage/current to the RF stages.
 Cooling System Failure: If the generator is overheating due to a failed fan or blocked airflow, it
may throttle output or shut down partially.

Impedance or Load Mismatch

 Torch Misalignment or Fault: A bad connection or improper load at the ICP torch can result in
reflected power, lowering generator output to protect itself.
 Matching Network Issue: The automatic or manual matching network between the generator
and plasma torch may not be tuned properly, or its components (capacitors/coils) might be
damaged.
 High Reflected Power: Some generators reduce power output if they detect high VSWR (voltage
standing wave ratio) to prevent damage.
 Check reflected power on the generator display—if it's high, it's likely a mismatch issue.
 Inspect RF cable and connectors between generator and torch for signs of damage or loose
connections.
 Ensure coolant flow and fan operation are normal—overheating can trigger protective
shutdowns.
 Try a different torch or dummy load if available, to isolate whether the problem is with the
load or generator.
