Loading a roll – Load with accessory 500 Series
Lower pinch force

Thanks to motorized pinch wheels, pinch force can be regulated.

• To avoid wrinkles when printing on very thin textiles, trigger load with accessory to activate
lower pinch force.
• For other media loading without accessory, normal pinch force will be applied.

Important: Flimsy textiles must be loaded with accessory thru FP otherwise high pinch force will
be applied and wrinkles will appear.

How to lift pinches? 500 Series

There is a FP option:

• Press > Substrate > Release substrate.

This can be useful when the media has been loaded with too much skew, and it must be corrected without
unloading

• Feed the substrate until it hangs in front of the printer, and align the right edge with the input roll.

• Press OK.

Latex 500 Dancer/Tension Bar
500 Series

Different winding directions can provide different front tensions. This can be used when
critical length consistency is required.

Different media types can required different front tensions to achieve length consistency.
▪ SAV: more front tension leads to better length consistency
▪ Paper: less front tension leads to better length consistency

a
With the Latex 500 dancer:
▪ For more Front tension loading the TUR with the printed side outside (a)
▪ For less Front tension loading the TUR with the printed side inside (b)

With theses recommendations 1mm/m spec should be achieved. Check user guide for all b
specs.

Note: For critical length consistency avoid using the wiper roller.

Printing defects
1-To prevent quality defects, do NOT pull the substrate up while the printer is
printing
2- Use the Take-up reel for long run jobs to prevent a similar defect

NOTE On the Latex 300s if the Take-up reel is loaded, you need to change the option to ENABLED.
On the Latex 500 this is done automatically.

Searching for the best possible substrate preset
Before you start touching substrate presets parameters

The table shows how to find the best possible substrate, starting with the most optimal.
Preset Description

This is the best possible substrate because it is made by the reseller

1 Provided by the substrate reseller
specifically for their substrate.

HP has made and published more than 250 substrate presets for the most
2 Published by HP popular substrates in the world. These profiles have been generated and
tested following the HP image quality standards.
A full set of generic and HP substrate presets are pre-installed in the printer.
These presets don’t provide the best possible performance of a given
3 Generic printer default preset
substrate, but provide acceptable results for most of the substrates of this
family.

You can easily edit, clone, remove, or create substrate presets as well as fully
4 New preset created from the front panel

Before changing substrate preset parameters
Other steps to take
• Make sure that the substrate preset is correctly installed in the RIP and ICC is correctly selected.
• Check the image quality test
• HP published media presets have been generated at “office” temperature and relative humidity. If
environmental conditions are not close (high humidity or low temperature) the HP published
substrate presets may need to be fine-tuned to compensate for those differences and to cure
properly.
• On the Latex 330 and Latex 310, the advance for each substrate must be calibrated. On the rest of
products check that the OMAS is working properly.
• Align the printheads.
• Check that color calibration is current
• If you already have the best possible substrate preset and have checked all these steps, and still
have a image quality issue, follow the next troubleshooting process to fix it.

Calibrate the advance on the Latex 310 and 330 Latex 310, 330
These 2 models do not have OMAS

The substrate-advance check plot consists of several columns

with a number at the bottom of each one. Locate the lightest of
the columns and enter its number into the Advance settings for
the current substrate preset and printmode. The value chosen in
this example should be “−6”.
This operation may also be necessary on the Latex 360 printer if
OMAS is not working or not able to “navigate” this substrate.

Pattern is printed with the KC printheads

• The rear printhead prints a stair-step.
• The front printhead prints horizontal lines.
• As the substrate moves forward the horizontal lines are printed on top of the

− Where the horizontal lines and the stair-step coincide, the area looks lighter.
This is the appropriate correction.
− Where horizontal lines and stair-step do NOT coincide, the area looks darker.

3 main parameters
There are 3 main parameters to consider when troubleshooting image quality issues with the Latex
printers:
• Ink quantity
• Curing temperature
• Printing speed (number of passes and interpass delay)

If you change any of the parameters, this will usually affect the
others. For a given substrate preset:
If you want to… You may need to…
Reduce the curing temperature Print slower or reduce ink
Increase curing temperature or

reduce ink
Increase ink (to have better Increase curing temperature or

Use when encountering:

- Wide & Low frequency vertical bands coinciding with Printzone air deflectors.

- Mainly seen on Self Adhesive Vinyl and Backlits, in certain colors, usually with high ink

Root cause: related to uneven drying of the Optimizer and/or Ink.
