GLOBAL SOLUTION FORUM

Agenda : Food wastage

Ann-Maan,
Recalling the vital role of food in achieving sustainable development, promoting food security
and nutrition, and eradicating hunger and poverty,

Deeply concerned by the global problem of food waste, estimated to account for around
one-third of all food produced, amounting to approximately 1.3 billion tons of food wasted
annually, which is nearly 45% of the overall food produced,

Recognizing the significant negative impacts of food waste on the environment, including
wasted resources such as water, land, and energy, and contributing to greenhouse gas
emissions and climate change,

Noting the disproportionate burden of food waste on developing countries, where

post-harvest losses can be particularly high due to inadequate infrastructure, technology,
and government support and initiatives,

Acknowledging the diverse causes of food waste at different stages of the food supply
chain, from production and processing to distribution, retail, and consumption,

Clauses

Part I: Farmers
Calls for investment in research and development of improved agricultural practices that
reduce post-harvest losses, such as proper storage facilities, pest control solutions, and
efficient irrigation systems;

Calls for the implementation of educational programs for farmers to raise awareness about
sustainable farming practices and efficient crop management;

Encourages the adoption of precision agriculture technologies to optimise resource use and
reduce overproduction;

Urges governments to provide financial incentives and support to farmers engaging in

sustainable practices;

Suggests the establishment of farmer cooperatives for shared resources and knowledge
exchange to minimise wastage;
Part II: Wholesalers
Reaffirms the commitment to achieving Sustainable Development Goal 2.3, to halve per
capita global food waste at the retail and consumer levels and reduce food losses along
production and supply chains, including post-harvest losses, by 2030;

Recommends the development of efficient storage and transportation infrastructure to

minimize post-harvest losses during distribution;

Calls upon wholesalers to collaborate with farmers in implementing better forecasting

methods to align supply with demand;

Endorses the use of advanced logistics technologies to streamline supply chains and reduce
spoilage during transportation;

Encourages the standardization of packaging and labeling to improve traceability and

minimize damages during transit;

Urges wholesalers to adopt fair pricing policies that justly compensate farmers for their
crops.

Part III: Associations

Encourages all relevant stakeholders, including the private sector, civil society organizations,
and research institutions, to actively engage in collaborative efforts to address food waste
through:

Providing access to affordable cold storage facilities to extend the shelf life of perishable
goods;

Improving market infrastructure through better waste management systems and hygiene
practices;

Offering training and education programs on food handling, storage, and marketing to
minimize losses and optimize profitability;

Part IV: Consumers

Encourages the formation of alliances between governments, non-governmental

organizations, and private sectors to address food wastage comprehensively;

Promotes public awareness campaigns to educate consumers about the issue of food waste
and encourage responsible purchasing and consumption habits;
Supports initiatives to establish clear and accurate food dating labeling to reduce
unnecessary food waste due to confusion over expiration dates;

Encourages the adoption of “ugly food” campaigns to combat discrimination against fruits
and vegetables with cosmetic imperfections that are still perfectly edible;

Part V : Government
Requests the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to continue
playing a leading role in coordinating international efforts to combat food waste, by:

Providing technical assistance to Member States in developing and implementing national

food waste prevention strategies;

Facilitating partnerships and knowledge exchange among stakeholders across the global
food system;

Monitoring progress and reporting on global food waste reduction efforts;

Stresses the significance of collective efforts across different levels and fields to effectively
tackle food wastage;

Affirms the commitment of member states to work collaboratively towards achieving the
outlined solutions.
