Project :
Principal Investigator :
Project : Feminization of GIFT using Diethylstilbestrol and Confirmation of YY
Supermales production through MAS and Quality Seed Production
through Cohort Breeding
Principal : Dr. Salina Yesmin
Investigator Senior Scientific Officer
Project : The Bottom Cleaning Project
Principal Investigator: : Md. Rabiul Awal
Scientific Officer, BFRI, Mymensingh
Our session began at 10:00 AM under the guidance of Dr. Md. Moshiur Rahman, Senior
Scientific Officer at BFRI, who acted as our mentor. He was accompanied by Md. Shahin Alam,
Scientific Officer, BFRI. At the beginning, we were given a short briefing where they spoke in
detail about Small Indigenous Fish (SIS).
This year, their research is focused on three species:1) Ghaura, 2)Poa, and 3)Mohashol
BFRI is conducting extensive work on small fish through various ongoing projects.
The main purposes of these work are:
To conserve endangered fish species.
To identify and promote commercially important small fish species.
Dr. Rahman shared a research workflowfollowed in their projects, which can be summarized as
follows:
Fish Species Selection: The team selects the target fish species based on importance and
conservation status.
Literature Review & Research Design: Secondary data is collected from research
journals, followed by the formulation of a research design.
Engagement with Local Fishermen: They communicate with fishermen to collect fish
or broodfish from natural waterbodies.
Transportation: The fish are transported using drums or plastic bags with oxygen
support.
Acclimatization in Ponds: The fish are accommodated and fed in ponds.
Brood Selection: Broodfish are selected for breeding.
Conditioning: Fish undergo conditioning in preparation for controlled breeding.
Hormone Injection: Hormonal treatment is applied for induced breeding.
PG (Pituitary Gland hormone): 10 mg/kg
Synthetic hormone: 0.5 ml/kg
Dr. Rahman further explained the advantages of PG over synthetic hormones. PG causes less
stress in fish and ensures that only mature eggs are released, while synthetic hormones tend to
release both mature and immature eggs, which may compromise breeding quality.
