COMMON DISEASES AND TREATMENT / COVID 19 – QUESTION 1 AND QUESTION 2.
QUESTION 1
Read the information that is focusing on different diseases and then answer the questions that follow
Tuberculosis
TB is an infectious disease caused by bacteria. TB affects the lungs but can also effect other organs in the body.
When a person with TB coughs or sneezes, the bacteria moves into the air and can infect other people. Without
proper treatment TB patients get weaker and can die. TB can generally be treated with antibiotics
Diabetes
Diabetes is caused by the body not being able to break down and use sugar; therefore there is too much sugar in
the blood. There are different types of diabetes and they have different causes. The type 2 diabetes is caused by
an inactive lifestyle, obesity and an unhealthy diet ( too much fat and sugar ). Type 2 diabetes can be managed by
losing weight and adopting a healthy lifestyle. Type 1 diabetes is usually genetic; it is managed with daily insulin
injections.
Epilespsy
Epilepsy means to have repeated seizures or convulsions. This happens when there is unusual electrical
discharge in the brain. There are many different causes but sometimes , no cause can be found.
Most people who have epilepsy take medication which help to control their seizures. People with epilepsy should
avoid alcohol and drugs, get enough sleep and avoid stress. Activities that are dangerous for people with epilepsy
include climbing and diving
Obesity
Obesity ot being very overweight , can have a serious efect on your health. It increases the risk of heart disease ,
diabetes and some cancers. Obesity is usually caused by a cobination of : too much food, the wrong kind of food )
lots of fat and sugar ), too little exercise.
Treatment is usually a plan, made with a doctor or nurse, to reach a normal weight for your age and height. This
would include a combination of a healthy eating plan and exercise routine.
Anorexia
This is an eating disorde where a person has a very low body weight and has a fear of being fat. The extreme
dieting and weight loss puts the operson ar riks of malnutrition and even death. The causes of anorexia are not
completely understood but it is thought that it is a conbination of factors :
Poor self-esteem and body image, socal pressures ( emphasis on being very thin), genetic factors ( inhereted
from family ) Anorexia is usually treated by treting thye underlying emotional causes of the disorder. This is
usaully done under the care of a psychiatrist of psychologist and sometimes a dietician is also involved.

HIV
HIV is a virus which affects the person’s immune system. The most common ways of spreading HIV are through
sexual contact, sharing needles or from infected mothers to their babies during birth and breastfeeding.

Antiretroviral drugs are the main form of treatment for HOV. They do not cure HIV, but can stop people from
getting sick for many years. People who are HIV-positive should eat a health balances diet, avoid alcohol and
cigarettes, avoid exposure to infections and diseases, live in a clean, hygienic environment, regularly see their
doctor or nurse at the clinic.
AIDS
The late stage of HIV infection that occurs when the body’s immune system is badly damaged because of the
virus.

Corona Virus
A coronavirus is a kind of common virus that causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. The
symptoms include fever, coughing, shortness of breath, trouble breathing, headache, sore throat, loss of smell or
taste, diarrhoea. Antibiotics won’t help because they treat bacteria, not viruses. The virus is primarily spread between
people during close contact often via small droplets produced by coughing, sneezing, or talking. The droplets
usually fall to the ground or surfaces over long distances. People may also become infected by touching a
contaminated surface and then touching their face. The time from exposure to onset of symptoms is typically
around five days but may range from two to fourteen days.
Recommended measures to prevent infection include frequent hand washing, maintaining physical distance from
others , covering coughs, and keeping unwashed hands away from the face. The use of a face mask is
recommended to prevent spreading of the virus. Currently, there is no available vaccine for the treatment of
COVID-19.
Management involves the treatment of symptoms, supportive care, isolation, and experimental measures. The
World Health Organization (WHO) declared the 2019 coronavirus outbreak a Public Health Emergency of
International Concern (PHEIC). On 30 January 2020 it was declared as pandemic.
A virus entering healthy cells in your body and multiply. It has an effect on your respiration, airway, nose and lungs.
Your lungs are affected and you struggle to breath and this can lead to pneumonia.

QUESTION 3-5
HEALTH, SOCIAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL RESPONSIBILITY
SUBSTANCE ABUSE
Substance abuse
Substance abuse refers when you use a legal or illegal substance in the wrong way, generally for its effect on
the human body. Addiction occurs when a person can no longer control their need to escape from their
problems.
Recreational substances
It is drugs that are taken for pleasure. Some recreational drugs are legal, such as tobacco, alcohol, and caffeine,
bur are still very harmful. Illegal recreational drugs include dagga, ecstasy and heroin. Recreational drugs are
classified as opiates, depressants or stimulants.
Opiates
Opiates copy the brains’ feel-good hormones, called endorphins, and bring about a state of peaceful euphoria.
Heroin, morphine and opium are examples of opiates.
Depressants
Depressants also known as downers, slow down the messages in the brain and along the nerves. This means
that they reduce emotions and help people to forget their problems. Alcohol, dagga and solvents ( liquid
substances sniffed and causes a “high” are examples of depressants.
Stimulants
Stimulants also known as uppers, speed up the messages in the brain and the nerves. The help to heighten
people’s senses, making them experience things in a more intense way. Caffeine, nicotine, tik cocaine and
ecstasy are examples of stimulants.
Ways in which substances are taken
Swallowing – Many drugs are swallowed in oil or liquid form, for example pain tablets, ecstasy and alcohol.
Smoking – Some drugs are smoked and then absorbed into the bloodstream through the lungs. Drugs like
tobacco, dagga and tik are commonly smoked.
Snorting – Some drugs are sniffed or snorted up the nose. This introduces the drug into the mucous linings of
the nose where it is absorbed into the bloodstream. Powered drugs like cocaine, heroin, and speed are snorted
in lines. Tik is also snorted.
Injecting – Some drugs like heroin, cocaine and tik, can be made into a liquid form and injected into the
bloodstream using needles and syringes. This is very dangerous because needles and syringes are shared and
can this can cause diseases like hepatitis and HIV and AIDS to spread rapidly.
Symptoms of substance abuse
Physical symptoms
Dramatic weight gain or loss. Red or glassy eyes or pupils larger or smaller than usual. Changing in eating habits
– eating more or eating less. Neglecting grooming habits and general appearance. Tremors, slurred speech or
trouble walking or staying upright. Odd smells of breath, body or clothing. A rash around the nose and mouth,
unexplained needle marks, bruising, or blisters on the skin.

Behavioural symptoms
Stopping activities such as sports, hobbies and homework. Declining of academic results at school. Having a
new group of friends and avoiding previous friends or family. Is having mood swings is irritable or has outbursts.
Changes in sleep patterns, is restless or lazy. Lying and other selfish behaviour. Stealing or borrowing money or

items. Feeling unmotivated, hopeless depressed or even suicidal. Using room deodoriser and incense.
Constantly talking about using drugs or pressuring others to drink or use other drugs. General forgetfulness and
blackouts or memory lapses about the night before. Getting in trouble with the law, getting into fights or causing
accidents. Being fearful, anxious confused, paranoid or depressed for no apparent reason.
Personal factors that contribute to substance abuse
People using drugs to escape their physical and emotional problems. People has a low self-esteem or a
unhappy family life. People start drinking to numb feelings of depression. They start to smoke dagga to deal with
stress at home or school. They rely on cocaine to boost energy and confidence, using sleeping pills to cope with
panic attacks, or taking pain tablets to treat severe pain or headaches.
Interpersonal influences
You are influenced by your family and friends. A stable and structured home environment with clear rules and
good communication between family members, reduces the chance that children will experiment with
substances.
Intra personal ( individual ) influences
Individuals with low self-esteem are at risk of abusing substances. They cannot say no to others and resist peer
pressure. Genetics plays a role when it comes to alcoholism.
Community influences
How the community view substance abuse can influence a person’s decision to abuse substances. Substance
abuse is portrayed in the media in movies, adverts, newspapers, magazines. It can promote or discourage
substance abuse. The laws regarding substance abuse can also influence people’s decisions. Economic
background can also play a role in a person’s decision to abuse a substance.
