OUTLINE
“skeleton of your essay”
▪ a map of your essay or a blueprint
▪ it shows what information each section or
paragraph will contain, and in what order
▪ most outlines use numbers and/or bullet points to
arrange information and convey points
An outline can help ensure that:
✓ Your main points are on-topic and directly
support your thesis
✓ Your main points are logically organized.
✓ Your most important ideas are emphasized,
and your less important ideas are subordinated.
✓ Your main points have enough and relevant
supporting evidence.
Outlines also help writers:
✓ Make the writing process easier since you have a
road map to follow.
✓ Break through writer’s block.
✓Save time writing your essay since you have a
clear, focused plan to follow for your essay.
✓ Ensure each part of your essay relates to the
essay.
HOW TO DO IT?
✓ Use Roman numerals (I, II, III, IV, V, etc.)
to indicate the main points/topic
sentences
✓ Use capital letters (A, B, C, D, E, etc.) for
the major supporting details.
✓ Use numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.) for sub-
details clarifying and specifying your main
supporting details.

cooperation among team members, especially in relays. It is good exercise
and builds muscular strength. Swimming provides same benefits as other
sports.
Moreover, swimming provides some unique additional benefits. It is
also an important skill that can be used forever. In addition, it poses a

My Dog, Romeo
My dog, Romeo, is the best pet anyone could have. He is easy to care for. Playing
with him is lots of fun. He always takes care of me. There isn't a better pet
anywhere.
Romeo is easy to care. Caring for him is easy because I simply have to make sure
he has fresh water and food every day. I exercise him by throwing his toys. Romeo
doesn't require much care.
Romeo has lots of fun to play with. He loves to play catch. He follows me around
the house with a toy and drops it on my foot so I will kick it. He can catch just
about anything, but his favorite is chasing a Frisbee. I really have fun playing with
Romeo.
Romeo takes care of me. He always follows me when I leave a room. When I am
sitting on the couch he plops down right beside me. When we are outside in the
woods he always makes sure that I keep up with the rest of the family. He always
watches out for me.
As you can see, Romeo is a great pet. I am proud of him and he doesn't require
much care. Playing with him is always enjoyable. He watches over me and keeps
me safe. Romeo is absolutely the best pet anyone could even have!
