For Olive Raeder and in memory of Richard Raeder,
for making so much possible.
A madman, helpless, outcast and despised, who drags out
a twilight existence in some asylum, may, through the insights
he procures us, prove more important than Hitler or Napoleon,
illuminating for mankind its curse and its masters.
—elias canetti, Crowds and Power
preface
This is an unlooked-for project. Like many others, I first saw Artaud
through the filters of American experimental theater and post-structural-
ism. My earliest work on Artaud began from accepted familiar premises,
largely established in the 1960s: Artaud as prophet, madman, genius,
was the thing to study; his significance lay in his status as an inspira-
tional figure manifesting a largely ahistorical impulse; his denunciation
of civilization’s discontents implied a progressive critique. My research
led me in different directions, however. Fueled by a desire to really read
Artaud’s works closely—especially his early writing and his produc-
tions—I dug into the archives to research Artaud’s theatrical practice.
There I found, much to my surprise, that he had a gift for directing that
had been recognized by his contemporaries but completely ignored by
his successors. I began to wonder what was at stake in keeping Artaud’s
theory separate from his practice, in deciding that Artaud meant only in-
sofar as we abstracted him. In 2005, I published some of this research in
an essay on Artaud’s directing in the Alfred Jarry Theater. To highlight
the very real practical talents of a figure known almost only for his theo-
ries, I avoided discussion of his later, most famous work, The Theater and
Its Double, and its key term, “cruelty.” I initially had expected the archival
research to feed into a book on Artaud’s theater practice. While that ma-
terial does inform the study at hand, the significance it has assumed has
changed significantly.
Reading his work in the context of the 1920s and ’30s confirmed that
the young Artaud had plenty in common with other young Parisian
artists of the early twentieth century. At first, he seemed to fit in with
these idealists, ready to starve for their ambitions, working with the feel-
ing that they were about to create a revolution. But I noticed that the path
Artaud took had a radically different fundamental orientation than that of
his Parisian peers. In order to both get my own bearings and understand
what set Artaud apart from his contemporaries, I soon felt I needed to ex-
x : preface
amine his most well-known work, The Theater and Its Double, on its own
terms, historically situated, outside of received associations with avant-
garde ideas and especially outside of the concerns of his latter-day fol-
lowers. The process was a de-familiarizing experience.
Artaud’s writings reflect an implacable belief that every material
thing, every differentiated object and every force compelling them, is
cruel, corrupt, sick, evil. The only true peace his works envision lies in un-
differentiated- or nonbeing. The force animating Artaud’s oeuvre—what
gives it its inexhaustible power—is the desire to expose the underlying
foundation of le mal and, more still, to call for the material annihilation,
liquidation, or erasure of all those debased concrete and discrete objects
that constitute our world.
The dark view underlying Artaud’s oeuvre is not unique to him, es-
pecially in a French literary culture full of poètes maudits, but its extremity
and form are striking. Artaud wrote that “the face within is evil,” a world-
view repeated throughout his oeuvre with relentless ferocity. Further, he
yearned to enact his vision on the bodies of others: he conceived of spec-
tators at his Theater of Cruelty as unindividuated organismes, and he
voiced the most autocratic ideas on directing yet articulated. Yet a partic-
ular use and interpretation of his writings have become so established
among people pursuing radical ideas for life and the theater, who have
wished to make artistic innovation and social progress synonymous, that
the singularly disturbing event called for by The Theater and Its Double has
been obscured.
A number of intangible things let us know when encountering a work
of art that an artist may be taking us on a journey that is unpleasant, dis-
turbing, but we are confident of the motivation; we feel a kind of human
sympathy or questioning guiding the work that establishes the common
ground of the journey. Whatever those intangible things may be, they are
missing in Artaud’s work, especially when read in its historical context.
As I researched Artaud’s work in the context of the interwar era, I
found numerous and undeniable connections to contemporaneous ideas
and theaters no one had discussed—the flourishing, reactionary line of
what Isaiah Berlin called counter-Enlightenment thinking; the historically
concurrent theatrical developments of the rise of the director and the tam-
ing of the audience; the (under-studied) people’s theaters in fascist Italy
and Germany; and the history of the rise of mass politics. My readings on
crowd theory—initially intended for another work—proved to be a kind
of decoder ring that enabled me to recognize a reactionary, fascistic ten-
Preface : xi
dency that is undeniably present and provocatively under-examined in
Artaud’s writings.
As a consequence, this book is a long way from the one I had ex-
pected to write. I thought I would be reading Artaud in connection with
the leftist camp of the avant-garde; I now believe that was dangerous
wishful thinking. The danger comes not from believing that students or
practitioners of theater who use Artaud as an inspiration will suddenly
find themselves fascists, but from the implications of the inability to read
Artaud’s work in light of what’s patently there. If we’ve embraced his
works, incorporated his ideas into our own, we need to examine more
closely what desires and impulses we nourish when we do so.
Many of us have assumed even before reading Artaud that he was
aiming for any number of things—greater understanding, freedom, indi-
vidual creativity, a “better world,” perhaps—because of how we were in-
troduced to him. We have read our own hopes into the confusion of his
revolutionary-sounding rhetoric, adding on to sentences that were al-
ready complete our own conclusions (“so that we will, in the future, x, or
y . . .”).
Alternately, we have read him backward, our perception colored by
the last photos of him after he emerged from the asylums, toothless, hag-
gard, scribbling his fury into worn notebooks that immediately were
snatched up by his new, young acolytes, fetishized, and published. Like
those who only knew him in those last two years and treated him as an in-
spirational but harmless, destroyed, holy fool, we strip him of any will or
intent to participate in the “real” world, in any world of action.
To help avoid repeating some of these reading patterns in my own
study, I have, in addition to reading Artaud’s works in their historical
context, confined most biographical information to footnotes. In this, I
may be slightly overcompensating for the preponderance of biography in
other studies of his works (and, indeed, decisions about what to put in the
footnotes when discussing his work as a director became particularly
challenging). But I have attempted to respect a boundary between an
analysis of ideas and structures and an analysis of a man—although Ar-
taud himself did not respect these boundaries—for the sake of interpret-
ing his work in a context other than his personal life. Who “Artaud”
might have been, I could not presume to know.
acknowledgments
Many colleagues and friends have been generous with their support on
this project. I warmly thank, in particular, James Bierman, Michael Even-
den, Patricia Gaborik, James Harding, Olivier Penot-Lacassagne, Kara
Reilly, Cindy Rosenthal, and Mike Sell, all of whom took the time to read
sections or drafts of the book and provide me with thoughtful feedback. I
thank Brandin Baròn, Kathy Foley, and David Marriott for timely contri-
butions of references and perspectives from their areas of expertise. All
these contributions were valuable, but I alone am responsible for the con-
clusions presented here, as well as any residual errors.
This work is happily indebted to the University of California, Santa
Cruz, in many ways. Multiple grants from the Senate Committee on Re-
search and the Arts Research Institute supported this project at crucial
stages of its development. Many thanks to my research assistants,
Nathaniel Bogie, Megan Fox, Emily Gift, and Sarah Kelly. Three chairs of
the Theater Arts Department—David Cuthbert, Mark Franko, and Danny
Scheie—each encouraged me to teach a seminar on Artaud, for which I
thank them, as well as the students in those seminars, whose questions,
ideas, reservations, and enthusiasms all pushed me forward. Thanks to
Catherine Soussloff and the UCSC Visual and Performance Studies Collo-
quium and to Chris Connery and Gail Hershatter at the UCSC Cultural
Studies Colloquium for inviting me to present portions of my research.
The staff of the Bibliothèque Nationale and the Cinémathèque Na-
tionale (Paris) assisted me tremendously in accessing archival material
and images.
A version of portions of section II first appeared in Theatre Journal 61
(2009): 191–211, for which I thank Jean Graham-Jones and David Saltz.
Also thanks to Jody Enders and James Harding for publishing research
that found its way, in different form, into chapter 6, in Theatre Survey 46,
no. 2 (2005): 247–73.
The Comparative Drama Conference, the Twentieth/Twenty-First
xiv : acknowledgments
Century French and Francophone Studies International Conference, the
International Federation for Theatre Research, and the American Society
for Theater Research (ASTR) all provided invigorating environments in
which to present portions of my research. I am especially grateful for dis-
cussions at ASTR with the participants in our many avant-garde semi-
nars, as well as colleagues and friends, including Sarah Bay-Cheng,
Michael Chemers, Shawn-Marie Garrett, Odai Johnson, Carol Martin,
Cary Mazer, Joseph Roach, and several others already thanked here, with
whom sharing research and ideas has been lively and gratifying. Also
thanks to Elinor Fuchs, Marc Robinson, Gordon Rogoff, Catherine
Sheehy, and especially James Leverett for encouraging my earliest inves-
tigations into Artaud’s work.
I am indebted to everyone at the University of Michigan Press, espe-
cially LeAnn Fields and David Krasner for their support, and LeAnn for
her unflagging generosity and perspicacity.
Three people were conspicuously valuable in this process. Blake
Morris was a brilliantly talented research assistant (whose passion for
Canetti was critically infectious), and I am glad he has yet to stop think-
ing with me about these ideas. Kathy Chetkovich’s clear-sighted feedback
on my writing was but part of her profoundly multifaceted support, for
which I am inexpressibly thankful. Finally, Erik Butler has read more
drafts, suggested more sources, listened to more ideas, and given me
more encouragement and help during this process than could possibly be
accounted for by any motivation other than love. For this, I can only thank
him in kind.

a note on the texts and
translations used
A small fraction of Artaud’s writing is available to the English-language
reader. Only four volumes of the twenty-six-volume Oeuvres complètes
have been translated into the English Collected Works. Although it would
have had the advantage of citational elegance, I did not quote and trans-
late entirely from the OC—that is, Antonin Artaud, Oeuvres complètes
d’Antonin Artaud, nouvelle édition revue et augmentée, vols. 1–26 (Paris: Gal-
limard, 1976). Instead, I opted, when possible, to cite from texts the reader
might be able to readily locate. The primary sources for this are:
CW Collected Works of Antonin Artaud. 4 vols. Trans. Victor Corti.
London: Calder and Boyars, 1968–73.
SW Selected Writings. Trans. Helen Weaver. Ed. and intro. Susan Sontag.
Berkeley: University of California Press, 1988.
TD The Theater and Its Double. Trans. Mary Caroline Richards. New
York: Grove Weidenfeld, 1958.
I use Richards’s translation for The Theater and Its Double because hers is
the book most people are likely to have on their shelves; it has also been
the most influential translation. For works by Artaud not contained in
these sources, I translate myself, unless otherwise noted, and provide the
original in the footnotes. For other French material, I cite from existing
translations in the body of the text whenever possible, but translations
from all French sources are mine unless otherwise noted.
introduction : The Uses and Abuses of
Antonin Artaud
Je n’ai jamais rien trouvé d’éclairant dans
ce que les gens disaient sur Artaud.
—paule thévenin
An apocalyptic sensibility drives the writing of Antonin Artaud, infuri-
ated and propelled by a sense of the world’s utter and unimaginable
wrongness. Artaud’s works, expressing exhilaration in brutality and
seeking peace in annihilation, describe a universe in which evil rules
without its dialectical term of good, and in which the best existence
would be one without body, shape, or consciousness. The fight for impos-
sible absolutes—the staging of a hopeless and devastating struggle—is
what Artaud called the Theater of Cruelty, and it is for imagining this that
he has become one of the most renowned theatrical figures of the twenti-
eth century.
Artaud envisioned the Theater of Cruelty as this: an epidemic event
that would destroy the individual and overturn every human creation, in-
cluding language and civilization; liberate itself from all logic, matter, and
history; “assault and benumb” the individual; operate in the realm of
myth and image; and impose the vision of an omnipotent director on a
“hypnotized” and surrounded assembly. His vision was rooted in a strong
belief in the dark nature of man, the omnipresence of evil, the foulness of
the body, and the need to systematically employ “cruelty and terror.”1 Ar-
taud sounded this call in The Theater and Its Double, which was written be-
tween 1931 and 1935, a period when Europe was still shattered from the
devastation of World War I; people were being politically conceptualized
as masses; and charismatic leaders denouncing the world’s corruption
were orchestrating their way into World War II through spectacular mani-
festations of sensorial, rhetorical, and emotional manipulation.
