Research Proposal: Advanced Electric Drive Systems for

High-Speed Permanent Magnet Motor Control

1. Introduction
The project aims to address the existing challenges in relation to transient operations of
a high-speed motor drive systnem for use in applications that require high power density.
These application areas are numerous and are of varying scale of application. They find
utility in an immensely diverse spectrum ranging from domestic appliances to industrial
automation and from electric vehicles to aerospace.

2. Objectives
The primary objective of the research is to address the existing challenges of high-speed
motor drive system such as:

 low position accuracy


 low system stability
 large current harmonics

This is to be achieved by

 comprehensive analysis of inverter/controller topologies and corresponding


modulation strategies to determine the most suitable options for the target
applications
 addressing motor control strategies to ensure optimal performance
 enhancement of sensor less position detection

3. Opportunities and Challenges


High-speed PM motors are becoming increasingly popular in a variety of applications
because to their high efficiency, small size, and good dynamic response. The primary
benefits of PM motors arise from permanent magnets, which produce a continuous
magnetic field while eliminating the requirement for field windings and related losses.
These motors can run at rates of more than 20,000 RPM, considerably increasing their
power density.

However, the control and administration of such high-speed motors necessitate complex
drive systems and control algorithms. The primary challenges for high-speed PM motors
include:

 Robust design requirements to withstand mechanical stresses induced due to high


speeds
 Thermal management to ensure maintaining optimal operating temperatures,
thereby maintaining high efficiencies
 Precise and minimum latency control to ensure
4. Key Tasks

Education
I have obtained my bachelor’ s degree in [Link], Mechanical Engineering with a CGPA of
7.58 on a 10 point scale. I am currently pursuing my Master’s degree in MSc, Mobility
Engineering with specialization in Automotive Engineering (Powertrain track). I have also
taken up courses in Systems, Mechatronics and Control.

Knowledge
I understand that the key focus area of the project is to address the existing challenges in
relation to transient operations of a high-speed motor drive systems for use in
applications that require high power density. I am currently working with Volvo Cars, as
part of my Master’s thesis on the possibility of using a Doubly Fed Induction Machine
(DFIM) in tandem with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machine (PMSM) to achieve All
wheel Drive (AWD) capabilities in Electric Vehicles. I, along with my thesis partner have
worked on a comprehensive strategy to ensure optimum performance. Our thesis work
forms the basis of a 3-year product development cycle, which, if successful is expected to
be commercialized in near future.

Skills and Abilities


Domain Knowledge

I have extensive knowledge of automotive systems, especially the powertrains. I


understand the working of a wide range of powertrain systems including electric
powertrains, internal combustion engines and hybrid systems. My core competencies
include design, function and optimization of these systems based on core mechanical
and electrical engineering knowledge that I have acquired through my academic and
professional interactions.

System Modelling and Analysis

I am a competent user with extensive expertise of modelling tools such as MATLAB,


Simulink, PLECS, GT Suite. I also have intermediate level of expertise in CAD/CAE tools
such as CATIA and ANSYS, required for design and fault diagnosis. Furthermore, I also
have some limited experience with Multiphysics tools such as COMSOL and ANSYS
Maxwell.

Testing and Validation

In addition to modeling, I am skilled in conducting system analysis to extract useful


insights and conduct informed decision-making. This include doing sensitivity analyses,
optimization, and scenario simulations to assess system performance under various
scenarios. My analytical abilities enable me to detect possible problems, evaluate system
resilience, and offer improvements to increase efficiency and effectiveness. Moreover, I
have experience in validating and verifying models against experimental data and real-
world observations, ensuring their accuracy and reliability.
Multi-disciplinary outlook & Flexible working style

Through my experiences and sustained efforts, I have developed a multi-disciplinary


outlook which makes me versatile. I have a diverse skill set that span across various
fields such as mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, systems engineering and
data analysis. This gives me the ability to convey complicated modeling findings to both
technical and non-technical stakeholders has helped me drive project success and build
collaboration among interdisciplinary teams. In addition, I have a flexible working style
which allows me to work in teams or conduct independent research as per the
requirement of my recruiter.
