Elements of Art

The document outlines the basic Elements of Art, including line, shape, form, space, value, texture, and color, which serve as the foundational components for creating art. It also introduces the Principles of Design, such as balance, emphasis, and movement, which guide how to effectively use the Elements of Art in artwork. Module No.

1 - Elements of Art
Elements of Art – these are the basic building blocks of making an art. Once you make use of these
elements, it is easier to create your own art. Like ingredients in a recipe, the chef uses a list of ingredients
which are combined together to produce a delicious dish. The artist uses art elements and combines them
in different ways to create a wonderful masterpiece.
A.) Line – a distance between two points; can express emotion; can create or define space
Kinds of Lines:
1.) Straight lines – vertical or horizontal 4.) Curved Lines
2.) Diagonal or Slanting lines 5.) Zigzag Lines
3.) Wavy lines 6.) Spiral

B.) Shape – two dimensional and flat; only has height and width; it is the result of closed lines
Categories:
1.) Geometric Shapes – square, rectangle, triangle, circle, oval, heart, star, hexagon
2.) Organic or Freeform Shapes – come from nature like clouds, animals, leaves

C.) Form – 3D shape; also has height and width but it is not flat anymore
– includes a sphere, cube, cylinder, cone and pyramid
– we can create space by drawing forms

D.) Space – refers to the distance between or the area around and within shapes, colors and
lines

E.) Value – lightness and darkness of a color. White is the lightest value while black is the
darkest
value. The difference in between them is defined as contrast.
– Artists use value to create highlights and shadows or shading in objects and create a
degree of intensity in their drawings or paintings.

F.) Texture – plays with our sense of touch; it is the surface quality of an object
– refers to the way things may feel or look as if you are touching them

G.) Color or Hue – derived from light; magically gives life to your artwork
 Light – is made up of wavelengths of light where each wavelength is a particular
color. The color we see is a result of which wavelengths are being reflected
to our eyes.

Different types of colors or hues:

1.) Primary hues – red, yellow and blue
2.) Secondary hues: green (yellow + blue)
violet (blue + red)
orange (red + yellow)

Module No. 2 – Principles of Design

Principles of Design – design strategies on how you can use the Elements of Art

A.) Balance – the distribution of the visual weight of objects, colors, texture and space
1.) Symmetrical – balance drawing (identical on both sides)
example: drawing a butterfly
2.) Asymmetrical – different on both sides
3.) Radial – round type of balance where the things or shapes are coming out from
the center
B.) Emphasis – is a focal point; putting a focal point in your art helps draw in viewers,
makes them want to look at other areas in your art

Strategies for using focal point:

1.) using colors – like popping colors
2.) using radial balance – things coming outward from the center
3.) using scale – blow up an object in the drawing or artwork

C.) Movement – using colors, shapes and lines that suggest a flow of movement; it is
a visual pathway through a work of art and allows our eyes to move
from one side to the other
