Title
Enhancing the Problem-Solving Skills of Grade 5 Learners in Mathematics through
the 4-Step Problem-Solving Strategy
Introduction
Problem-solving is a vital component of mathematics education that helps learners
develop critical thinking and reasoning skills. However, many Grade 5 students find
it challenging to solve word problems due to a lack of understanding and a
structured approach. To address this issue, this research explores the use of the 4-
Step Problem-Solving Strategy (Understand, Plan, Solve, Check) to improve learners’
mathematical performance and confidence.
Statement of the Problem
Many Grade 5 learners struggle in solving word problems in mathematics. This
research seeks to find out how the 4-Step Problem-Solving Strategy can help
improve their skills and performance.
Specifically, it aims to answer the following questions:
1. What is the level of problem-solving skills of Grade 5 learners before the
intervention?
2. What is the level of problem-solving skills after using the 4-step strategy?
3. Is there an improvement in learners’ performance after the intervention?
Objectives
1. To assess the initial problem-solving skills of Grade 5 learners.
2. To implement the 4-Step Problem-Solving Strategy in teaching math word
problems.
3. To evaluate the improvement in learners' problem-solving performance after the
intervention.
Methodology
- Participants: Selected Grade 5 learners from [Your School Name] during the School
Year 2025–2026.
- Design: Pre-test and post-test method.
- Instruments: Teacher-made test in solving word problems, observation tools, and
weekly quizzes.
- Procedure:
1. Conduct a pre-test to determine the learners’ current level.
2. Implement the 4-step strategy over 4 weeks.
3. Monitor progress through quizzes and observation.
4. Conduct a post-test to evaluate learning gains.
Intervention
The intervention involves teaching word problem-solving using the 4-Step Problem-
Solving Strategy, which includes:
1. Understand – Read and comprehend the problem.
2. Plan – Choose the correct operation or strategy.
3. Solve – Perform the necessary calculations.
4. Check – Review the solution for accuracy.
Worksheets and guided practice activities will be used throughout the intervention
period.
Expected Outcome
After the intervention, learners are expected to show improved accuracy and
confidence in solving word problems. The strategy is anticipated to help them
approach problems more systematically, resulting in higher post-test scores and
better overall performance in mathematics.
