1. Picture analysis
a. Analyze the content of the picture above using the Key Concept Questions.
The characters appear to be from many civilizations and have just landed at an airport,
based on the animation. The circumstance demonstrates a cultural misinterpretation.
What do I do now? asks the man on the left appears to originate from a society that
values personal space highly. In the meanwhile, the guy asks, "When will he accept my
card? seems to come from a society where it is commonplace to be physically near,
even when conducting business.
The man in the middle with the bag, who comments “He leaves a bit a personal space
invasion!”, and the woman exclaiming “Whoa personal space invasion!” are clearly
uncomfortable with what’s happening. On the other hand, the man on the far right, who
says “I’m next. What should I do?”, seems unsure of how to handle the situation after
witnessing the confusion.
Overall, the cartoon shows how cultural differences—especially about personal space
and social behavior—can lead to misunderstandings. What might be normal in one
culture can feel uncomfortable or even offensive in another. It reminds us that being
culturally sensitive is important so we can respect and understand people’s differences.
Introspecting:
1. What are your observations or generalizations on how texts and/or images are
presented?
Based on the cartoon, I realized that both text and images can work together to explain
big ideas in a way that’s easy to understand and relatable. The cartoon uses a funny
situation to bring attention to a serious topic. The speech bubbles show us what the
characters are thinking, while the pictures give clues about their emotions through body
language and facial expressions. The way the characters are drawn also makes their
reactions clearer. This proves that combining text and visuals is a powerful way of
communicating and can help people learn important concepts more effectively.
2. In what ways should media present texts/images about various cultures?
I think media should present texts and images about different cultures in a way that is
respectful, informative, and meaningful. For example:
 Avoid stereotypes – Media shouldn’t rely on clichés or overgeneralizations.
Instead, it should show that every culture is diverse and that people are unique
individuals.
 Show different viewpoints – It’s not enough to focus only on one perspective.
Media should highlight multiple voices and experiences within a culture.
 Give context – Traditions, customs, and behaviors should be explained so
audiences can understand their purpose, rather than just seeing them as “weird”
or unfamiliar.
 Share authentic stories – The best way is to let people from that culture tell
their own stories, instead of only presenting how outsiders see them.
 Encourage empathy – In the end, media should help us appreciate cultural
differences while also reminding us of the values and experiences we share as
humans.
