(c) Shear centre
(d) Centroid

Ans: (c) Shear centre

Shear centre:
 Shear centre is a point from which a concentrated load passes then there will be only
bending and no twis ng.
 It is also called centre of twist.
 It is that point through which the resultant of shear passes.
 To avoid twis ng and only cause bending, it is necessary for the forces to act through a
par cular point, which may not coincide with the centroid.

4. Carbon steel contains a carbon percentage of about 0.21%. The possible type of carbon steel is
(a) medium carbon steel
(b) alloy steel
(c) mild steel
(d) stainless steel

Ans: (c) mild steel

Carbon steel:
 Carbon steel is a common type of steel that is an alloy of iron and carbon.
 It has a higher carbon content, lower mel ng point, and greater durability compared to
stainless steel.
 Carbon steel is the most widely used engineering and construc on material for industrial
applica ons on a large scale, including marine structures, power plants, transporta on,
chemical processing, and petroleum produc on and refining.
 Low/Mild carbon steel contains 0.1 to 0.3% of Carbon.

Name of Plain Carbon Percentage of Proper es

Steel Carbon
Dead Mild Steel 0.05% to 0.15% Very so , highly duc le, excellent weldability
Mild Steel 0.15% – 0.30% So , duc le, easily welded and machined
Medium Carbon Steel 0.30% – 0.60% Stronger and harder, less duc le than mild steel

High Carbon Steel 0.60% – 1.00% Hard, tough, less duc le, wear-resistant
Very High Carbon Steel 1.00% – 2.00% Very hard, can be tempered, bri le, low
duc lity
