2. IRC:67 2022 Specifications for Type IV Sheeting:
Retro-reflective sheeting is typically manufactured as a cube corner. The reflective
sheeting shall be retro-reflective sheeting made of micro prismatic retro-reflective
material. The retroreflective surface, after cleaning with soap and water and in dry
condition shall have the minimum co-efficient of retro-reflection (determined in
accordance with ASTM D 4956-09) as indicated in Table 6.6.
"Retro-reflection" means the reflection of light which is returned in directions close to
the direction from which it came, and this property being maintained even over wide
variations of the direction of the incident radiation.
"Observation angle (symbol a)" is the angle between the illumination axis and the
observation axis as shown in Fig.
"Entrance angle (symbol p)" means the angle from the illumination axis to the reference
axis. The reference axis is an axis perpendicular to the retro reflective surface as shown
in Fig.

The table for Acceptable Minimum Coefficient f Retro-Reflection for Type IV Prismatic
Grade Sheeting is shown in table below:
In the case of screen printed transparent colored areas on white sheeting, the
coefficient of retro reflection shall not be less than 50 per cent of the values of
corresponding color given in table 6.3 to 6.9.
3. Method and Standard Reference for testing retro reflectivity of Type IV:
IRC:67-2022 Guidelines:
Clause 6.7.4.3 – Type IV Micro Prismatic Grade Sheeting
Retro-Reflective sheeting is typically manufactured as a cube corner. The reflective
sheeting shall be retro-reflective sheeting made of micro prismatic material. The retro

reflective surface, after cleaning with soap and water and in dry condition shall have
the minimum co-efficient of retro-reflection (determined in accordance with ASTM
D4956) as indicated in Table 6.6.
4. Reflectometer Methodology:
Calibration: First use zero cap & then use reference cap to the calibrate the instruments.
Calibrated instrument must display the values written on calibration cap for 0.2, 0.5 &
1.0 degrees.
Test for -4-degree entrance angle – Place the lens of reflectometer over the sheet &
press the trigger. Note down the values displayed on the screen. Repeat the step to take
3 reading at various locations of the sign boards & take the average to compare it with
minimum required values given in IRC 67-2012.
Test for 30-degree entrance angle – Put 30-degree adapter on the reflectometer &
repeat step 2.
Note down all the values in a test report format, take average and compare it with
minimum required Ra values given in IRC 67-2012.
Guidelines – Things to remember for site testing.

1.Clean the signage.
2. Always do calibration before starting the reflectivity test at site.
3. Average of all readings need to be compared with minimum required values.
4. Do not measure the reflectivity on damaged/scratched area.
5. Do not measure the reflectivity on the tooling/fabrication line.
6. Proper PPEs shall be made available during site testing.
