About the course

Learning outcomes
Students will be able to:
• communicate about studied topics using the standard level of
politeness of Japanese Writing & oral
• use the basic polite inflections of Japanese copula, verbs and
adjectives Writing & oral
• write and read the two phonetic scripts hiragana and
katakana without much difficulty Kana
• write and read about sixty of the most basic ideographical
kanji characters Writing
• explain the origins and basic structure of kanji characters Writing
• pronounce sounds from Japanese so that they can make
themselves understood Oral
• describe how Japanese sounds differ from those of Swedish
or English Kana

Dictionaries:
You can use both paper dictionaries and online dictionaries. BUT
online dictionaries may contain insufficient/inappropriate
information. Always double-check if the translation really matches
what you want to say.

Attendance and study hours


• Lessons: regular lessons twice a week (week 36-43)
and 3 extra kana lessons in week 36-38 (Check the
schedule in Course information in Canvas.)
You are required to attend actively at least 12 of 15 regular lessons
(80%) with a headset and a web camera, to pass this course.

• Study hours: You will need to spend 40 hours per week


studying for this course.

Lesson day & time
Regular lessons
• Group 1: 13:00-14:30 on Mondays & Thursdays
• Group 2: 9:30-11:00 on Tuesdays & Thursdays
• Group 3: 12:45-14:15 on Tuesdays & Thursdays
Kana lessons
• 10:15-11:15 on Friday (in the first 3 weeks)

• It is allowed to join the other group’s lesson temporally if you can’t attend your
group’s lesson.
• Let your teachers know your absence (or switching groups) in advance by e-mail.
• If you think that you already can read and write both hiragana and katakana fruently,
please stay after today’s lesson and consult with the teacher.

Course contents and homework


You need to have done and pass all homework to get a
grade in the end of the course.
•Kana & kanji worksheets - weekly
•Online quizzes (Preparation/Grammar/Kana&Kanji
quizzes, passing score: 80%) – weekly
–Online quizzes have a time limit.
–First 2 weeks, you can see correct answers after the due-date.
–From the 3rd week, you can see correct answers directly after taking online quizzes.
–From the 5th week, your average score will be shown as your result.

Students’ academic achievement is assessed continuously in this course.
In addition to that, there is a final examination for each module.

Kana (3 credits)
Kana test on the 4 Oct. in w.40 (Online written examination)

Oral language proficiency (6 credits)
