MODULE 4

EDUCATION 4.0: RESPONDING TO THE DEMANDS OF SOCIETY

I. Introduction/Rationale

How can schools adapt to the demands of 4IR? How can education prepare you in today’s most rapidly
emerging technologies? Within scientific and technical education, teachers as well as you, the learners, will need to
educate and re-educate to positively respond to the demands of society. In this module , we shall discuss how to
constantly or frequently renew and update skills required by 4IR through Education 4.0. Teachers as well as
students need to be more proactive and creative. The 4IR campus must become a constantly renewing collaborative
hub of activity to maintain itself within the fast-paced environment of the future.

Learning Objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:

1. discuss how Education 4.0 could respond to the demands of society.

2. explain the nine trends related to Education 4.0.
3. identify the top ten skills of the 21st Century.
4. assess the relevance of the K to12 Program

III. Content

The big question is: how can schools adapt to these demands?

Industry 4.0 refers to the fourth industrial revolution. It calls for a dynamic transformation of how
all aspects of business and production are done. A new wave of global technology will change global
production. Internationalization, in all aspects of business and industry, will be the norm. Countries can no longer
remain confined within their borders but must become citizens of the world. Leaders in this new era will need to be
critical thinkers, problem solvers, and be able to interact across the globe. In short, they need to be liberally
educated.
But how should this impact on education? Future workers will need to be highly trained in the
emerging technologies but also, as importantly, in the values associated with using those technologies. In the future,
we must not only possess the ability to develop the technology but also to know whether, when, and where to use
that technology. That kind of thinking is both reflective and interdisciplinary. Schools must reinvent themselves
quickly. They need to adapt to the demands of the RI4 and have the obligation to come out of its shell, its hermetic
spaces and try to give as many opportunities as possible by creating the adequate contexts for students to be
prepared for the future jobs. The problem in the future could not be the lack of employment, but the shortage of
skills that the new jobs will demand.
PROFED F/TC3 MODULE 4 Page 1 of 1
In other words, Industry 4.0 will require the world to produce a new kind of worker—a knowledge
worker! Tomorrow’s industry leaders and managers must possess new skill sets to adapt, to manage, and to take
advantage of Industry 4.0. They must be critical thinkers, problem solvers, innovators, communicators, and provide
value driven leadership. They must be able to see beyond the technology at play to the implications for society for
the use of that technology. These traits define the knowledge worker. They must know the technology but be able to
meet and solve all aspects of the challenges engendered by this technology. This kind of leader requires a new
approach to education.

Education 4.0 is a response to the needs of IR4.0 where human and technology are aligned to enable
new possibilities. Fisk (2017) explains that the new vision of learning promotes learners to learn not only skills and
knowledge that are needed but also to identify the source to learn these skills and knowledge. Learning is built
around them as to where and how to learn and tracking of their performance is done for the secondary education in
the next 5 to 7 years.

There are nine trends related to Education 4.0 (Fisk, 2017).

 First, learning can be taken place anytime anywhere. e-Learning tools offer great opportunities for remote,
self-paced learning. Flipped classroom approach also plays a huge role as it allows interactive learning to be
done in class, while the theoretical parts to be learned outside the class time.

 Second, learning will be personalized to individual students. They will be introduced to harder tasks only
after a certain mastery level is achieved. More practices will be provided if the instructors see a need in it.
Positive reinforcements are used to promote positive learning experience and boost students’ confidence
about their own academic abilities.

 Third, students have a choice in determining how they want to learn. Although the learning outcomes of a
course are preset by the institutions/bodies in charge of the curriculum, students are still free to choose the
learning tools or techniques that they prefer. Among the options that lecturers can adopt to enable students
to be creative in their learning are blended learning, flipped classroom and BYOD (Bring Your Own
Device) approach.

 Fourth, students will be exposed to more project-based learning. Students are required to apply their
knowledge and skills in completing a couple of short term projects. By involving in the projects, they are
practicing their organizational, collaborative and time management skills which are useful in their future
academic careers

 . Fifth, students will be exposed to more hands-on learning through field experience such as internships,
mentoring projects and collaborative projects. The advancement of the technology enables the learning of
certain domains effectively, thus making more room for acquiring skills that involve human knowledge and
face-to-face interaction.

 Sixth, students will be exposed to data interpretation in which they are required to apply their theoretical
knowledge to numbers and use their reasoning skills to make inferences based on logic and trends from
given sets of data. The manual part of mathematical literacy will become irrelevant as computers will
perform the statistical analysis and predict the future trends.

 Seventh, students will be assessed differently and the conventional platforms to assess students may become
irrelevant or insufficient. Students’ factual knowledge can be assessed during the learning process, while the
application of the knowledge can be tested when they are working on their projects in the field.

 Eighth, students’ opinion will be considered in designing and updating the curriculum. Their inputs help
the curriculum designers maintain curriculum contemporariness, up-to-date and usefulness. Lastly, students
will become more independent in their own learning, thus forcing teachers to assume a new role as
facilitators who will guide the students through their learning process.
PROFED F/TC3 MODULE 4 Page 2 of 1
The nine trends of Education 4.0 shift the major learning responsibilities from the instructors to the
learners. Instructors should play their roles to support the transition and should never consider it a threat to the
conventional teaching profession.

Strategies for Conducive Learning Environment

Based on the World Economic Forum report on Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) (World
Economic Forum, 94 IJELS 6(3):92-982016b), there are 16 crucial proficiencies for education in the 21st century
which are grouped into:

 Foundational Literacies, which deal with how students apply core skills to everyday tasks,
 Competencies, which deal with how students approach complex challenges and
 Character Qualities, which deal with how students approach their changing environment.

The report lists 14 strategies that can create a conducive learning environment to support SEL. These
strategies can help students develop their collaborative, communicative and problem-solving skills (Soffel, 2016).
Having incorporated the strategies, students are hoped to have better character qualities such as having social and
cultural awareness, leadership skills, be more adaptive, persistence and initiative. Besides character qualities,
students are also hoped to acquire competencies related to problem-solving/critical thinking skills, creativity,
communication, and collaboration.

C. EDUCATIONAL REFORMS: The K to 12 Curriculum Example

PROFED F/TC3 MODULE 4 Page 3 of 1

Education reform is something that has been evolving for many years, and it is a way in which to
make education better for everyone regardless of economic status, race, sex, or age. Reform of the education
system has taken on many faces throughout the years and under different political administrations. The fact is
that education is always progressing and one administration will add to its reform to better the current
educational system for everyone.

Why the leaders of the country pushed for the K to 12 Curriculum?

What are the salient features that will yield learners with the 21st century skills?

The K to 12 Curriculum Example in Educational Reforms

The Philippines fully implemented in school year 2016-2017 the K to 12 program, a reform
initiative that lengthens the total number of basic education years from ten to 12. It was a reform that was met
with some opposition by parents and teachers alike but was carried out smoothly and according to schedule,
despite change in government administration. In the last two years of basic education termed as senior high,
students choose one of four learning tracks as specialization, with the Academic Track as preparatory for
university. The three other tracks, particularly the Technical-Vocational-Livelihood, focus on skills and talent
development and target gainful employment or entrepreneurship for students without the need for a university
degree. Through required pre-school, each child aged 5 years old will now gain access to early childhood
learning.

Six Characteristics of the K to 12 Program

1. Strengthening Early Childhood Education

Research shows that children who go through standards-based kindergarten programs have higher
completion rates than those who do not. Through required pre-school, each child aged 5 years old will now gain
access to early childhood learning. Students will learn letters, numbers, shapes, colors through songs, dances,
and games using their mother tongue. This is a bold step toward making Grade 1 students a reader and a way to
get them ready for formal schooling.

2. Making the Curriculum Relevant to Learners.

Studies show that students grasp their lesson well if they can relate to them. Thus, the new program
will include examples, activities, songs, poems, stories, and pictures based on culture, history, and reality. Added
as well are thoughts on issues such as disaster prevention, climate change, and information and ICT. Through
relevancy, they expect the students to gaining in-depth knowledge, skills, values and attitudes through continuity
and consistency across every level and subject.

3. Building Skill
Experts have proven that children learn lessons and a second language better and are more active in
class when mentors teach them in their mother tongue. To build skill, learners must keep their ethnic uniqueness,
values, and culture. To do this, the program will use the child’s main language in studying and on learning tools
from kindergarten through third grade.

4. Ensuring Unified and Seamless Learning

In spiral progression, students first learn the basic concepts while they will study the complex ones in
the next grades. This lets them learn topics and lessons that match their development and cognitive skills. As
learners revisit and share them over and over again, they strengthen retention and enhance mastery of the topics and
skills.

5. Gearing Up for the Future

The program aims to guarantee college preparedness and brace TecVoc education and training. This lets

students choose their career path based on talent, interest, and the school’s capacity. The track choice will define
the subjects they will study in Grades 11 and 12.

6. Nurturing the Fully Developed Filipino

Beyond kindergarten, elementary, junior high, and senior high schools, each K-12 graduate will be
ready to move to different paths, It could either be for education, employment. or enterprise.
